Dr Matt Kritz
For the past 22 years Dr. Matt Kritz has been a sport and health
professional. For the past 14 years he has held director positions in athletic
performance support for Olympic and NCAA University organizations in New
Zealand and the United States. Within that time he has lead the strategic
development and leadership of the strength and conditioning departments for
those organisations. Dr. Kritz has been integral in the development and
leadership of the NZ High Performance Sport system from 2007-2014. In
addition he has been the lead strength and conditioning coach for three
national teams and four individual athlete Olympic campaigns over four
Olympic quadrennials (Sydney, Beijing, London and RIO).
Dr. Kritz
has unique and innovative mental models on physical preparation for sport and
activities of daily living. He has worked hard to develop systems and
strategies to help sport and health professionals identify and
mitigate the mechanisms that contribute to injury and is a passionate
spokesperson for why and how an individual’s movement competency
is the key to understanding how well that person will perform, resist overuse
injuries and rehabilitate from injury.
P1 Friday Preconference 9.00am – 5.00pm
Movement Competency Uncovered
This full day workshop will explore the tenants of Dr Kritz’s
philosophy on movement competency and the paradigm that
underpins his exercise prescription. Delegates will learn how to
conduct a movement competency screen, identify movement
incompetencies and learn effective strategies for improving the
movement competency of each of the fundamental movement
patterns (i.e. squatting, lunging, upper push, upper pull, trunk
rotation, trunk flexion and single leg movement tasks).
This
workshop is a must if you want to understand how to identify and
correct poor movement competency in your clients.
A1 & B1 Saturday 9.00 – 12.30
Movement Matters
This session will take delegates through a corrective movement
competency screen consult with delegates from the audience
graciously demonstrating how specific verbal cues and modest
training equipment can be used to improve an individual’s
movement strategies for long term wellness and performance. Matt
will also show his favourite movement tasks for each of the
fundamental movement patterns.
He will provide a detailed
description of why he has found the movements presented to be the
most beneficial at developing and enhancing an individual’s physical
prowess. Delegates can expect to walk away from this session
with pockets filled with gold nuggets to enhance their exercise
prescription repertoire.

Active Isolated Stretching (A.I.S.)
This "new age" of stretching is muscle specific, gentle and easy to
master. This workshop is an adapted programme from Stewart
Wild's "Bodies behaving badly". Stewart spent four months as an
apprentice to Aaron Mattes who wrote the book titled ACTIVE
ISOLATED STRETCHING: The Mattes Method. You will find that
it will add another dimension to the service you can offer your clients
using it extensively for injury prevention, rehabilitation, sports
training and performance, longevity enhancement and in general,
help lead a healthier lifestyle. AIS is:
Active - the athlete or client carries out the Range of Movement
Isolated- It isolates each muscle group surrounding a specific joint
Stretching- by giving a 2/3 second overstretch (just long enough
before the stretch reflex "kicks in," and by repeating the same
5
technique Stew Wild passed on from his learnings in the States. It was
included into her recovery programme and she saw vast improvements
immediately, not only in her technique, but also her flexibility. Dawn has since
used it extensively with other athletes, in rehabilitation, recovery and general
flexibility creating longevity to our aging population.
movement ten times it becomes ingrained into their muscle memory
AND as Stew Wild would say, "it puts that spring back into your
step".
This one day workshop will be a practical session covering the full
lower body
E1 & F1 Sunday 11.00 – 14.45
Active Isolated Stretching
This session will cover the principles of AIS (see above) and teach
therapists how to apply the techniques to the lower body using a
strap so they can teach their clients to perform the stretches
themselves.
P4 Massage Educators Workshop
A few years ago MNZ held their inaugural massage educators workshop as part of the annual MNZ conference. It was focused on various aspects of
the “teaching of massage” and was open to all massage educators. It was a very worthwhile day and we will be running another day for massage
and/or body worker educators on Friday 21st August as part of the preconference workshop day. The following topics have already been suggested
and will be included on the day, but we welcome other topics you may want covered:
Tips for increasing Maori/Pasifika engagement in Massage therapy education
Tips for online teaching
Six minute Solutions
o 10 min time slots where up to 6 different people offer their teaching, learning, assessment solutions to a challenge they found in the MT
classroom, 6 mins presentations then 4 mins Q&A
How to deal with stress in the classroom (students feeling the tutor stresses)
How to deal with extensions and deadlines (when want the competencies) - could be within the 6 min presentations
Client safety regarding contraindications - to clearly outline for students what these are, particularly around blood pressure
If you have any other topics you would like discussed please let us know so we can add them to the plan for the day. MNZ will cover the cost of the room hire and
equipment. Each massage educator will be required to cover the cost of morning and afternoon tea and lunch $40 per person. Please indicate this on the
conference registration
This workshop is open to anyone interested in the ‘teaching of massage”.

A2 Saturday 9.00 – 10.30am
The Lymphatic System: Its role in the body, its essential link to a healthy
immunity and its role in supporting the quality of your health
The lymphatic system over the years, has had little research or investigation in
its role in health other than fluid removal eg oedema. But a recent review of
the vascular physiology now shows the lymphatic system is responsible for
removing up to 80% of tissue fluid within the body and therefore this system is
now obtaining more medical interest in its role and effects on the body. This
presentation will educate you on how the lymphatic system works, its
relationship to immunity and methods of lymphatic movement.
A3 & B3 Saturday 9.00 – 12.30
Neurolinguistic Programming
NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) is a set of tools for understanding how we
work. As massage therapists we can both listen to the language our clients are
using, to get an understanding of where they are at, and use our own
"conversation" to accentuate the healing we facilitate. It is said that "we cannot
not communicate". This workshop gives you an insight in to how to make this
communication create a synergy with our hands-on skills, rather than
inadvertently creating the opposite. Come prepared to play!
B2 Saturday 11.00 – 12.30
Adolescent injuries in Sport:
Sport
during
adolescence
has
proven
immediate
and
life-long benefits to bone, cardiovascular and mental health. However
adolescence is also a very vulnerable period with a high risk for injury and
burnout. This talk will discuss the injuries that are unique to adolescence, and
strategies to manage the young athlete safely through their years of rapid
growth and development.

to force generation, improve biomechanical efficiency and modify faulty
movement patterns or techniques. A reduction in load combined with powerful
neurophysiological effects aim to provide prompt pain relief, reduce metabolic
demand, facilitate recovery and improve performance. These ninety minute
workshops will introduce you to the concept and provide a number of
techniques that you can incorporate into your treatments immediately.

What links connective tissue in general and fascia in particular to the idea that
the “issues are in the tissues”? What happens to the fascia when we touch
someone? Drawing on fascial research and the energetic mechanism as
applied in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Barry will explain how fascia
may be the medium of human transformation, biomechanically, psychosocially
and spiritually. In mind, body and soul. Does the fascia hold memory? How
does the application of acupuncture (acupressure) relate to the fascia? What
is the effect of different body therapies on the fascia in terms of neurobiological
effects and energy principles?(quantum mechanics). Knowledge of these
mechanisms of fascia may transform how you practice massage and body
therapies

Magnetic massage tools for the effective treatment of chronic
musculoskeletal pain
This course is suitable for therapists seeking to enhance their skills when
performing deep tissue therapy. You will learn methods that obtain significantly
faster outcomes, while reducing pain response for the client. We have found
with correct application these Magnetic massage tools are able to significantly
shorten the time required to obtain deep tissue releases, particularly in tissue
with severe and / or old myofascial adhesions. This course will enable
therapists to more rapidly treat and / or better prepare tissue for conventional
deep therapy work.
10
We will be covering methods from light athletic flushing through to very deep
tissue scar and adhesion releases. Therapists will be introduced to rapid and
effective treatments for common problems such as Achilles and calf tension,
Tennis elbow, Plantar fasciitis, self-care for OOS of the hands and Carpal
tunnel as well as TMJ dysfunction, Tinnitus, Migraines, Concussion treatment,
plus many forms of OOS and methods of releasing scar tissue literally down to
the bone! The course will include one month’s access to 18 of our in house
training videos to enable therapists to review their training at their leisure.
Magnets will be available for sale at the end of the workshop
This is the first time this training is being offered to therapists outside our
corporate structure. All the training is in video format only however this link can
provide access to the ‘public’ introduction video.
