SPORTSMEN’S TENNIS AND ENRICHMENT CENTER
AMERICORPS MASSACHUSETTS PROMISE FELLOW/40 LOVE COORDINATOR
AmeriCorps Massachusetts Promise Fellows deliver the resources young people need to be successful in life by
creating, managing, and leading meaningful out-of-school time programs for youth in grades 6-12. Fellow projects
focus on mentoring, social and emotional learning, college and career readiness, academic enrichment, and
community service-learning.
The Massachusetts Promise Fellowship achieves this by placing AmeriCorps Fellows with non-profit
organizations and state/local government agencies that focus on fulfilling the needs of our youth by providing: a
caring adult, a safe place, a healthy start, a marketable skill, and an opportunity to give back.
SERVICE DESCRIPTION
BOSTON-The mission of Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center (STEC), located in Boston, MA, is to build
leaders on the court, in the classroom and in the greater community by providing academic, wellness and social
development programs alongside recreational and competitive tennis instruction for youth and adults. STEC is
committed to improving life opportunities for youth in Boston’s Blue Hill Corridor while welcoming a diverse
community from the Greater Boston area. The Fellow’s major project will be creating and leading 40-Love, an
individualized math support program for youth in our academic after school program. In tennis a score of 40-Love
is a powerful position, showing that the player has surpassed their opponent three points to zero on the verge of
winning. We want our students to know that they can have the power to surpass their peers and succeed in math.
S/he will work with TLC staff to identify specific areas of weakness in students. Based on that information s/he will
find and/or create specific activities designed to build student understanding and skills. The program will constantly
evolve as students master concepts and struggle with new concepts and skills. We envision a fluid structure where
students participate based on their current needs. Based on our experience we expect a core group of
approximately 20 students participating for the entire year with other students moving in and out
