The staff is hard at work planning our spring and summer
programs which are included in this program guide. We are
especially excited about our upcoming youth programs. Swim
lessons and Summer Camp will provide plenty of fun activities for
the youth this summer. For the adults we have a wide variety
of classes and programs planned for all to enjoy including our
annual Run for the Bagel race that has become one of our most
popular events.

Why our members love to be a part of
the Mattoon Area Family YMCA
After relocating back to the Mattoon area,
Marsha Foote was ready to join the Y.
Marsha joined in August 2013 but was not
new to the gym setting. Back in Morris, IL
she was actually employed at a gym (but not
a YMCA) as a step instructor and a welcome
desk staff member. It had been a while
since she taught so she began her Y
membership by sticking with the equipment
in the Wellness Center. Within a month she
reconnected with a familiar face, Audrey
Boyd. Audrey invited her to come to morning cardio (step) class. That’s when Marsha
remembered just how much she enjoyed
group fitness. She finds encouragement and
the ability to push herself a little more with
the support of a class.
Marsha & Josh Foote
Recently Marsha was encouraged to slip the instructor mic on once again. She feels she is physically ready
to lead a class again and share her passion for step aerobics. With step aerobics, Marsha loves that her
heart rate increases yet she does not feel like she is putting lots of stress on her joints.
Josh, Marsha’s son, joined the Y in May of 2014. It has been life changing. Even though Josh worked at the
previous gym, along with his mom, he never was physically fit. In Josh’s words “I lived a lifestyle with plenty
of pizza and Mt Dew and very little movement”. Like most people, Josh began in the Wellness Center using
the cardio equipment. He had an interest in volunteering at the Y and through being a volunteer he met a few
of our instructors. They encouraged him to check out the cycling classes. Several months later Josh now
takes up to seven cycling classes a week. He has dropped approximately 100 pounds and is no longer
addicted to sugar. He finds the music in cycling to be uplifting and helps to push him through his workout.
(Side note: Josh’s favorite style of music is Korean Dubstep)!

THE STRONG
CHALLENGE
A Challenge that Strengthens Spirit, Mind and Body.
Are you STRONG?
We all want to be STRONG in our overall well-being. It’s a real journey to
become strong. A journey is not a race but a commitment. JOIN the
STRONG Challenge.
This 6 week journey will teach you to Play, Train, Learn, Connect and
Volunteer. Registration opens May 1st. This is a free program for Y
members but you must register. Just like with Survivor you will log your
weekly success. The STRONG Challenge begins May 30th. (Gone for a
week on vacation-No problem, you can still participate).
Josh’s Y experience has also included participation in the Y Change program. Cindy Hamilton shares with the
group useful information in the area of nutrition, stress management and physical activity. He has been
recommending the program to others. (Check for this program to return in the fall).
Not only does Josh feel the physical difference but also the mental difference being active has made for him.
He has a positive outlook, more clarity and appreciates that fellow members offer support and notice the
changes he has made.
With group fitness at the Y, Marsha and Josh see the connection made between members. With the previous
gym Marsha and Josh never felt a sense of community. Within the Y they found that people care. That staff
as well as the members notice things such as when someone has been missing from class due to an illness or
to care for a spouse. Marsha says “the members look out for one another. They give each other support and
check on each other”.
Thanks Marsha and Josh for sharing your Y experience. We are glad you are a part of our Y family and can
inspire others to lead a healthy lifestyle.

BOBZILLA
The Friday 9am cycling class has a love/hate relationship with their instructor, Bob Zollmann. They know he
is pushing them to reach their goals and they appreciate his eagerness to see them excel. To show their
passion for his class they have a t-shirt that says it all. BobZilla’s face is on the front!
This type of bond among class members can be found in most of our classes including Body Pump, Yoga,
Zumba and morning cardio. Group fitness classes are a great way to find encouragement and support not
only from our instructors but from fellow participants.
If you find yourself struggling to stick to a workout plan when doing it solo, then take some of our classes.
Introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know if it is your first time trying the class. Our instructors can introduce you to other members with similar goals and help create an exercise habit. You may find
yourself trying a few classes before finding the one that fits you. That’s ok. As instructors, our staff understands we are all motivated by different things.
Although becoming healthy and strong may be your main goal, you may end up walking away with an equally
valuable gift; a new friend! There’s something about sharing an experience together that can leave a lasting
impression and mark a new friendship or two. To learn more about the wide variety of classes at our Y, look
under Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness in this program guide.

This is a time for children to interact with others their age. Children will be involved in a variety of
different activities including games, songs and exercises. The goal of the program is to take your
child through different movements using songs to help them develop coordination while at the same
time having lots of fun. Caregivers are encouraged to stay and help.
Camp Ki-Ma-Y
Your kids will have the best summer ever when they sign up for Camp Ki-Ma-Y. Camp Ki-Ma-Y is an affordable and dependable child care option for families in the summer who require day to day care for children who are 5 years old and have
already completed Kindergarten - 12 yrs and just completed 5th grade. Camp Ki-Ma-Y provides children with daily summer
adventures that promote healthy spirit, mind, and body. Meeting new friends, learning team building concepts through the
YMCA curriculum, and expanding their knowledge through new experiences are positive outcomes of each week of camp!
Campers will spend time indoors and outdoors
as our staff leads them in a variety of activities
including: arts and crafts, small and large group
interactions, sports and physical play, recreational swimming, outdoor education and one
off-site field trip per week, and service projects.
This summer will be the best summer yet for your
child at Camp Ki-Ma- Y as they guide their own
camp experience. This summer we will be offering skilled activities that your child will get to
choose what they do at camp at the beginning of
the week. Each day they will build upon their
previous day skills to gain more knowledge of
that activity.
We also will be doing a reading challenge this
summer to help encourage the children to read
throughout the summer. For everyone that
participates there will be a celebration luncheon
and a few other surprises! We will be offering
small prizes along the way to encourage the
children to keep going.

Our Wellness Center provides enough equipment for the busiest of seasons. The spacious area includes
several pieces of cardio equipment, such as ellipticals, treadmills, bikes and rowing machines along with other
popular pieces such as the stairmill, helix & curve. The free weight and strength equipment area offers quite a
variety of machines for a complete strengthening program. To familiarize our members with the Wellness Center,
we do offer a free Fitness Center Orientation. For those health seekers wanting continued guidance, personal
trainers are on staff and available by appointment to design a workout to help individuals reach their goals.
Our Wellness Center is available to all members
14 and older. Youth members, aged 8-14, may
also use the Wellness Center once they have
completed an orientation with a staff member
and a parent. The orientation allows youth
8-10 use of the cardio equipment while 11-13
year olds may use cardio and selectorsize
equipment (no free weights). Colored wrist
bands will be given with each visit for youth
who have passed their orientations. An adult/
parent MUST be in the Wellness Center with the
