SEEKING PHYSICIAN VOLUNTEERS FOR SPRING 2015 PILOTS! BACKGROUND Imagine the impact our nation’s medical school alumni could have if we combined forces to address the urgent needs of patients with limited access to expert medical care….The alumni association presidents of several leading medical schools met two years ago to take on this challenge, and developed The MAVEN Project — Medical Alumni Volunteer Expert Network. MAVEN, an independent 501(c)(3) California nonprofit, is creating a national corps of volunteer physicians to fulfill the unmet health care needs of underserved populations by tapping two resources: • Volunteer physician-alumni from U.S. accredited medical schools and training programs such as UCSF, Harvard, Stanford, and Tufts and, • HIPAA-secure telemedicine technology that allows volunteer physicians to collaborate and consult remotely with clinicians in urban and rural safety net clinics. Through MAVEN, experienced primary care physicians and specialists - especially newly retired, semi-retired or other part-time doctors eager to contribute their expertise - will be linked with providers and patients in safety-net clinics. Why is this so critical? The United States is facing a serious gap in access to medical care. Millions of individuals in the U.S. live in underserved communities and rely on already overburdened safetynet clinics. And doctor shortages will rapidly escalate as more than a third of licensed physicians are over 55 and considering retirement in the next several years.
