MCA CANADA’S
ASSOCIATE COUNCIL REPORT
The last meeting of the MCAC Associates Council was held September 26, 2014 in St. John’s, Newfoundland on the occasion of MCA Canada’s 73rd National Conference. First and foremost, the Council discussions revolved around membership recruitment. Every element of MCA Canada is now actively engaged in
membership recruitment, including the suppliers. It was agreed at the last meeting that there was an obvious lack of wholesalers/distributor representation during Council meetings. As a result, the Associates are
now developing a value proposition to help attract potential wholesaler members. Overall, Associate Membership remains constant at about 100 supplier members.
The Service Division, MSCC, is also engaged in membership recruitment both within and outside MCA
Canada. Associates have been active in assisting to promote the MSCC through direct mail, articles and
face to face discussions with clients and potential members. The Council agrees that bringing in new
members is good for both the suppliers and the association, therefore it’s in everyone’s best interest to
help as much as possible.
Peter Ashton
Associate Council Chairman
Moving from membership to education, the Council received an update on the new direction and branding of the education foundation, which is
now referred to as the Construction Education Council (CEC). The new CEC has several programs which should be of interest to the manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors. First is the option to deliver educational webinars. There are also options to establish scholarship’s which
can be offered to the families of members in partnership with the supplier organizations. And finally, the Associates understand that the annual
golf tournament is a valuable fundraiser and the Council actively promotes the benefits of participating on all levels.
MCA Canada itself offers a wide range of advertising and marketing programs that cover pretty much the entire spectrum of promotional formats.
This allows the Associates to disseminate information to the contractors through every medium. Two new programs were introduced recently.
The first was the weekly enewsletter advertising package in Just The Fax. It’s highly focused and reasonably priced so it’s not surprising that it
sold out fairly quickly. The latest program, made available this spring, is the MultiMedia Promotional Campaign. It is a unique marketing tool in
that it touches the entire membership using direct mail with hardcopy pieces as well as email and web based options. Again, this highly visible
program was very well received and I’m sure it will be an excellent addition to the already extensive marketing package available to the Associates.
As for the Associates Council itself, a task force has been created to review the “Terms of Reference” with the specific task of reviewing council
executive eligibility as well as succession planning.
Of course the Annual Conference is the highlight event of the year. The sponsorship opportunities are extensive, the Supplier Showcase has
seen very good activity over the past few years and the majority of the attending Associates are open to assist in whatever is asked of them. I’m
sure I can speak for all of the Associate Members when I say that most of the participating companies look forward to this event each year.

MCAC/CIPH Supply Chain Procurement Guidelines
The Mechanical Contractors Association of
Canada (MCAC) and the Canadian Institute of
Plumbing & Heating (CIPH) Board of Directors
came together to develop best practice guidelines
to assist both mechanical contractors and
wholesale distributors when dealing with supply
chain management issues such as procurement.
It all starts with early involvement. Both parties can
initiate a smooth materials procurement process
by helping identify the needs, procurement
strategy and the drafting of a possible agreement
even before the requisition is actually received.
The guidelines then proceed through an
inclusionary process focusing on suggestions
for cooperation, communication and all the way
through to the use of standard documents.
"MCA Canada and CIPH firmly believe that both
parties should make a concerted effort to
understand their partners lead times, financial
models, business practices and ensure each
manage expectations, which will result in a winwin scenario for all involved", said MCA Canada
Chairman Gaetan Beaulieu.
The Best Practices Guidelines are a tool to help
strengthen the procurement process by taking
several factors into account prior to each
project. It's important that both the contractor
and the wholesale distributor work towards
understanding each other's business including
operational norms, which become essential in
conducting a more efficient and profitable
process for both parties.
You can download a copy of the Supply Chain
Procurement Best Practices Guidelines directly
from the MCA Canada website at www.mcac.ca
under the Publications tab and the ‘Articles and
Publications’ link.

MCA CANADA’S CHARITY
OPERATION EYESIGHT
In 2010, MCA Canada and Operation Eyesight joined
forces with the goal of helping to eliminate the
completely preventable disease “trachoma” by
providing accessible clean water and basic sanitation
to people in Zambia.
Operation Eyesight Universal is an international
development organization based in Canada,
dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness in the
developing world.
Since 1963, Operation Eyesight has prevented more
than 35 million people from facing the tragedy of
preventable blindness. Their work is focused in places
where blindness can be deadly, especially to those
who are very young, old or poor. A predominant
cause of avoidable permanent blindness is trachoma,
an eye infection transmitted by flies and exacerbated
by cultural and environmental factors. Left untreated,
trachoma leads to blindness. The most heartwrenching fact about trachoma is that it can be
eradicated with accessible clean water and basic
sanitation. Skin and respiratory diseases can also be
reduced or eliminated by providing accessible clean
water.
MCA Canada continues to appeal to our members
and the industry for contributions to help eradicate this
curable situation. We ask that you consider
contributing to this extremely worthwhile charity.

MECHANICAL SERVICE CONTRACTORS OF CANADA
MSCC is close to 200 members and counting!
Membership recruitment is an ongoing process that invites prospective members to ‘try’ the association.
A prospective member must then clearly understand the value for that membership and once that value is understood,
members can then be engaged. That engagement is what all organizations strive for and none more than MSCC. It is
the cornerstone of our long term success. Members who have direct access to their local association, to special interest
groups, committees and who attend conventions are significantly more likely to continue their relationship with the association, and we offer all of this and more….much more.
The recruitment strategy is designed around three specific stages. The first stage was to provide materials and
support for the provincial MCA’s to assist in their recruitment efforts. Having provided extensive resource material, contact lists and ongoing communication we moved to
the second stage of the process
The second stage was to market directly to the current
MCA membership on a national scale. This was done
through email, the website and newsletters. Finally a hard
copy mailer was sent to the entire membership, which
proved to be surprisingly successful. As a result of the
campaign over the last few months, membership has
grown to almost 200 companies Canada wide.
Finally, the third stage involves an ongoing recruitment
effort managed from the MSCC office, targeting potential
direct members. An email campaign was initiated in the summer but was discontinued once the Canadian Anti Span
Laws came into effect. This was followed by a hard copy brochure that was mailed to a group of 1,000 contractors in
specific geographic locations. This is being followed up with direct phone calls over the next several months, then a new
area will be identified and the process repeated.
The educational component remains a cornerstone of the organization and MSCC is researching a substantial expansion of the courses available with a focus on sales and operations. Working with the new Construction Education Council, a new ‘Career Path’ concept will be introduced in six specific service careers.
We are continuing the ongoing promotion of our certification and energy services programs along with the
‘Switch the Stat’ program with Summerhill Impact. Our enewsletter, The MSCC Dispatcher, continues to expand its readership and the ‘Find a Contractor’ database on the website continues to grow. In addition, MSCC will make every effort
to work more closely with organizations such as BOMA and other building management companies, as well as, Defense
Construction Canada and SNC Lavalin to mention a few.
Finally, Scott Grobel, has fulfilled his mandate as Chairman of MSCC. Scott has been a driving force for the MSCC and
helped establish the National Certification Program, the Energy Services Program and spearheaded the membership
recruitment drive, among many other projects. Our most sincere thanks go to Scott for his tireless efforts and dedication
as only the second chairman in MSCC history.
On a personal note, I am very honoured to accept the Chairmanship of MSCC and I will strive to continue the exceptional work of my predecessors in developing the service contractors division into a national organization that fellow contractors are proud to be a part of.
