The State of Practice of Building Information Modeling
(BIM) in the Mechanical Construction Industry
Dr. Awad S Hanna, Professor of
Construction Engineering and
Management at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison and Consultant to
the Construction Industry
The North American construction
Industry has seen a decline in
productivity for decades due to
underlying problems such as lack of
team collaboration, less initial design
input, and higher building systems
complexity. These problems are most
visible in labour-intensive trades, such
as mechanical contractors. Within the
last decade, Building Information
Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a
potential solution to these problems.
Professor Hanna has conducted a
North American Study that highlights
the state of BIM practice in the
mechanical construction industry.
Through an extensive survey and
interview process, this study resulted in
three key outcomes. The first is that
58% (62% in the US and 12% in
Canada) of mechanical contractors
have less than 3 years of BIM

experience and consider themselves as
beginners in the use of BIM. Second,
BIM implementation costs for these
contractors is 1 to 2 percent of their total
project cost estimate. Third, more than
70% of mechanical contractors agree
that BIM reduces field conflicts and
improves coordination. These factors can
assist mechanical contractors allocate
proper resources for BIM implementation
in their projects to reduce problems.
The survey results showed three
additional key factors. The first factor is
that three robust correlations exist as
follows: company size and BIM usage,
project size and number of staff to
implement BIM, and BIM experience
measured in years versus level of
expertise. These correlations assist
mechanical construction firms in
understanding current industry divisions.
The second factor is that the majority of
mechanical firms apply a 1 - 2 percent of
total project cost to BIM implementation.
The third factor is that there are two
focus areas that a majority of
respondents will be investing in for BIM
usage: creating BIM procedures
in-house and the marketing of BIM to
customers. These two factors will help
mechanical construction firms to better
allocate resources and budgeting.
The fourth factor is the added value of
BIM on project execution. There are six
main benefits for project execution; they
are reduction in field conflicts, better
coordination, easier clash detection,
enhanced facility design visualization,
efficiency in construction, and fabrication.
All of the key factors discussed, illustrate
important practices and characteristics of
the way BIM is used in the mechanical
construction industry.

PROMPT PAYMENT REPORT
The National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC), of which MCA
Canada is a founding member, commissioned research on Prompt Payment
Legislation by Prism Economics & Analysis. Now complete, the report describes the
need for a Prompt Payment Act in Ontario to establish minimum norms for payment
schedules in the construction industry. The report recommends a statutory model for
prompt payment that is based on other jurisdictions and on a consensus agreement
between the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada and the Ontario
General Contractors Association.
The heart of the problem is not outright
default on payment, but late payment.
Outright default is rare and can be addressed
by the lien system. However, there is no
effective remedy to late payments.
As a result, late payment practices have increased and so, as a consequence, has late
payment risk.
The majority of U.S. states, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have enacted prompt payment legislation to counter late payment practices. Ontario must do the same!
Enacting such legislation will benefit all stakeholders The status quo is not
working. It is time for government to fix the problem. Visit www.ntccc.ca
to download the complete report.

CMCEF Middle Management Conference 2013 Wrap – Up
The Foundation is pleased to report that yet another very
successful Middle Management Conference has come to a
close. Several weeks ago project managers, estimators and
company owners gathered in Halifax at the Atlantica Hotel for
three days of training focusing on skills that will help them
become more successful in their contracting careers.
Gregg Schoppman, a CMCEF/MCAC favorite led the
conference off with a one day case study on the importance of
the trades working together on the jobsite. He was a hard act
to follow but Bill Carson, Dr. Awad Hanna, Kevin Dougherty,
Dan Leduc and Gerry Call did an excellent job themselves as
they shared their vast knowledge while keeping the energy up
in the room. What is so unique about this conference is the
opportunity to share and work with your industry peers
throughout the seminars.
Without the sponsors, programs of this magnitude could not
take place. We would like to thank the following for their
continued support of our Foundation and its effort to ensure
properly trained personnel for the mechanical contracting
industry:

“The Right Choice”
“Building Calgary for over 20 Years”
MJS Mechanical is pleased to have served and supported the local, national and global community for over
two decades. At MJS Mechanical, we know the value of water. So much so, that we are proud to support the
Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada’s Charity of Choice, Operation Eyesight, in drilling wells in
Africa.
This worthy initiative not only helps eradicate the horrible and debilitating disease, Trachoma,
but also saves countless lives and provides thousands with hope for a brighter future.
The whole team at MJS is behind this effort. Our Founder and President, Brad Diggens, along with
his daughter, Jennifer, will once again be doing a fundraising initiative to bring clean water to villages in need.
This summer, they will be embarking on a 7 day unguided backpacking trip through the mountainous
regions of Iceland to raise more money for wells to save lives.
We encourage you to support us in this incredibly worthwhile endeavour.

MSCC SPRING REPORT
MSCC did a lot of groundwork last year to solidify the
foundation for our future growth and success.
We’ve enhanced the National Certification Program,
developed a brand new Energy Services project and enriched
the existing programs to increase the overall value for
members. In 2013, the MSCC Board will continue to
emphasize these three priorities and add membership
recruitment, fundraising and strategic partnerships to this list.
To start, the National Certification Program is growing
steadily with more technicians taking the online exam and
more applications from contractors. Technician photo ID
cards and certificates were developed as well as contractor
certificates and plaques. Also, there is a dedicated section
to the MSCC website to identify Certified Contractors.
The program is becoming more robust and work continues
with property owners, managers, organizations and
association to recognize and promote its value.
In November of 2012, MSCC held a One-Day Forum to
introduce a new program comprising “Energy Services.”
Research on a solutions provider who could partner with
MSCC has been underway since 2011. In November, it was
announced that Stantec was selected as the supplier of
choice. All MSCC members will soon be able to generate
an on-going revenue stream above and beyond typical
preventative maintenance contracts by leveraging the
experience of Stantec. A roadmap has been created which
includes the entire development process MSCC will follow,
including an educational component. We expect to officially
launch the program later this year. Keep on the lookout for
details as this is a very exciting and lucrative opportunity for
all MSCC members!
The MSCC Board agreed that a more focused effort will
be placed on membership recruitment over the next
couple of years to expand
the service member base.
We are fortunate to have
the support of MCA
Canada’s Associate
Council and CIPH to
spread the word about
MSCC benefits, programs
and services.
Other projects include the
“Switch the Stat” program,
the potential of a “Service
Scott Grobel, MSCC Chairman
Contractor Summit”, we
are updating our website with a searchable “Find A
Contractor” section and we’ve added social media to our
services.
Realizing we’ve only touched on some of the projects for
2013, we recognize that with all this underway, we are
going to need some help. At MCA Canada’s winter
meetings this February, we asked and were granted
approval to expand the MSCC Board of Governors to
include representatives from all provinces. These
volunteers will help guide the progress of the
organization and report on MSCC activities to the
constituent members. Soon we will be speaking with the
provinces to seek their assistance in identifying Board
Members.
Yes, there is a lot going on and as always, we encourage
you to take an active role in MSCC. Working together we
MSCC is excited to host our “Forum For Service Contractors”
again this year at MCA
Canada’s National
Conference in Winnipeg
will create a strong future for our businesses and our
association.
Respectfully submitted,
this September 25th so

MCA CANADA’S CHARITY
OPERATION EYESIGHT
In 2010, MCA Canada and Operation Eyesight joined forces
with the goal of helping to eliminate the completely
preventable disease “trachoma” by providing accessible clean
water and basic sanitation to people in Zambia.
Since that time, and thanks to the incredibly generous
contributions of individuals, companies and associations, we
have been able to raise $90,000. This translates to 18 new
wells.
This is a huge accomplishment in a short period of time which
will significantly impact the lives of thousands of people in
Africa and we look forward to continuing with this project until
we have reached our goal of 100 wells.
Operation Eyesight Universal is an international
development organization based in Canada and dedicated to
eliminating avoidable blindness in the developing world.
Since 1963, Operation Eyesight has prevented more than
35 million people from facing the tragedy of needless
blindness. Their work is focused in places where blindness
can be deadly, especially to those who are very young, old or
poor. A predominant cause of avoidable permanent blindness
is trachoma, an eye infection transmitted by flies and
exacerbated by cultural and environmental factors. Left
untreated, trachoma leads to blindness. The most heartwrenching fact about trachoma is that it can be eradicated
with accessible clean water and basic sanitation. Skin and
respiratory diseases can also be reduced or eliminated by
providing accessible clean water.
MCA Canada continues to appeal to the industry for
contributions to help eradicate this curable situation. We ask
that you consider contributing to this extremely worthwhile
charity.

MCA CANADA ADDRESS’ MCA OF AMERICA!
On March 16, 2013, on the occasion of the
Annual National Convention of the mechanical
Contractors Association of America,
MCA Canada Chairman, Brad Diggens,
addressed their Board of Directors of the
Mechanical Contractors as well as international
representatives from the United Kingdom,
Australia, and, of course, United States.
The following are excerpts of Chairman Diggens'
presentation:
Yesterday we had our International Alliance
of MCA’s meeting which once again generated meaningful and informative dialogue all
of which we can bring back to our own countries for the benefit of our respective memberships. I had the privilege of Chairing that
meeting!
“On behalf of the Executive Committee,
Board of Directors, and the general membership of the Mechanical Contractors Association Canada, I wish to thank MCA of America
for inviting us to your Annual Convention
again this year.
 We have been across Canada several
times attending and participating in industry
related events and conferences, always representing the needs of our members.
This convention is special because we have
chosen to hold our national (Board of Directors) midyear meetings in conjunction with
your event this year. You have made us feel
more than comfortable and welcome…..
as usual!
We have been extremely busy since we saw
you last:

Speaking of conferences, we held a very
successful national conference this past November in Maui,Hawaii where we had the
pleasure of having, as our guests, MCAA CEO
John Gentille and his wife Sally and President
Mac Lynch and his lovely wife Debbie.

We even had the pleasure of being with
our good friends from Northern California on
that occasion since they were having a meeting at the same location at the same time.

We continued to work with the National
Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada attempting to have prompt payment legislation
introduced in several provinces. I am pleased
to announce that we have an agreement with
the Ontario General Contractors Association
on the wording of such legislation for the
province of Ontario and we will be lobbying
together very soon.

Once again, we worked with the Canadian
Institute of Plumbing and Heating to promote
World Plumbing Day in Canada on March 11th
of this year.

We are holding our 8th National Middle
Management Conference this March in
Halifax, Nova Scotia.
BULLETIN #11

Our service contractors continued to offer
certification for contractors and their employees and are now educating building owners
and managers on the benefits of hiring certified contractors.

We continued to offer many management
related educational programs.

We became involved working with other
organizations to address such issues as upcoming labour shortages, strengthening our
national skilled trade training standards,
enhancing and promoting our industry's
image, and convincing the federal government to provide tax incentives for building
owners for energy efficient retrofits.

Over the past few days we had our annual
Winter Meetings here, in San Antonio, where
we spent our time concentrating on the
business of the industry and Association.
Involved in these meetings were members of
our Board of Directors and provincial and
zone MCA managers.

And the last thing I wanted to mention
was that we are diligently working on our
next national conference which is scheduled
for September 28-28, 2013 .
The conference will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba-home of
the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg
Blue Bombers. You are all invited to attend
and we would love to see you there!
Last year in Orlando I mentioned one thing in
closing …something that I am very proud of.
Over the past several years, the Chairman of
MCA Canada has selected a particular charity
to promote during his term of office and it
was called, quite simply, the “Chairman’s
Charity”.
I say “was” because recently it became MCA
Canada’s charity of choice. I am speaking of a
charity called “Operation Eyesight “which
helps to eradicate eye diseases, such as trachoma, of the people living in third world
countries. Last year MCA of America was extremely generous and contributed towards
the drilling of a well in Zambia thereby providing the people there with clean water.
What this means is that you have saved lives
in that country. You should be proud of that!
Once again, thank you so much for the kind
invitation and we look forward to meeting you
all during the week.
Thank you!”

ASSOCIATE COUNCIL REPORT
With 2013 well underway, several new and interesting projects are rolling out that
should increase the contractor member’s access to information on new and innovative
products and services. These new programs were discussed at the latest Associates
Council Meeting, which was held during the MCEE Trade Show in Montreal in April.
First, the Associates will introduce an updated, online version of the Associates
Council Newsletter to include case studies and project profiles. Advertising has been
eliminated and the articles will be informative and educational, which will make this a
“must read” for the contractor members.
In addition, we are looking at updating the MCA Canada website to include a
searchable database. This will make it much easier for contractor members to find
preferred vendors and the products and services they need to deliver on projects.

With 100+ Associate Members, the Council is always supportive of the efforts to expand
supplier membership by focusing on larger manufacturing and distribution organizations
that benefit from the work of the Association but don’t participate. The Council will continue
to provide input into the recruitment strategies, promotional collateral and communication efforts.
The Associate Members continue to encourage and support the efforts of the service division, MSCC.
The programs and services align well with the efforts of the Associates. The supplier channel is considered a
valuable source of information for the contractors and the efforts of the service division provides some great
data which the sales and marketing people can pass on. The Council unanimously agreed to support the
recruitment efforts of the MSCC and has asked for sales and marketing collateral that can be passed down
from the Council members to their customer facing staff.
Finally, the Annual Conference is a highly anticipated event for the Associates as it allows us to interact with
contractors in a relaxed and social environment. The Maui convention was extremely successful from our
perspective. The sponsorship opportunities were extensive and represented great value. Once again,
sponsorship was up in Maui. There were many opportunities to interact with the contractor members and the
venue was first rate. The conference Trade Show was very well attended and quite successful. Again, the
format, which partners the table top with a breakfast and the Annual General Meeting, has proven to be quite
effective. Everyone is looking forward to this year’s event in Winnipeg this September. The Associates are
eager to volunteer and if any interactive events are scheduled, they would be willing to act in whatever capacity
is required.
All in all, this should prove to be a great year and we are all looking forward to the continued growth of the
mechanical industry and the Association. If I don’t see you before, I look forward to seeing you in Winnipeg!
Respectfully submitted,
Tim Meadows
