June 23, 26, & 30
1:00pm to 2:30pm
Ages 8 and up
$32
McCall-Donnelly High School Art Room
Masks are an ancient form of art, used since
prehistoric times for protection, entertainment, sports,
and ritual. In this workshop taught by theater artist,
Robyn Wennberg, students will fashion their own
unique masks using a multi-step process. Using face
templates, students will create a mask using clay to
build and sculpt unique features, and paper mache to
form the sturdy body of the mask. After the masks are
hard and dry, elastic will be attached and students will
have the opportunity to paint and embellish their
finished pieces. The resulting masks may be used to
stage small skits or full plays, and are sturdy and
beautiful enough to be hung on the wall for artful
decoration when not in use. This class will introduce
both hands-on skills and the history of masks as used
in theater.
