Burmudagrass: The Transitional Zone (Continued)
MR. ROBERT M. MARTIN
DR. STEPHEN PARKER
The cell walls of the Bermudagrass were full of moisture from the first
half of winter and when the extreme cold came the cell walls burst just
like a frozen water pipe would. In a typical winter we see our coldest
weather in December and January which give the Bermudagrass a
chance to harden off slowly and prepare for cold. It then starts to green
up at the end of February to early March. With soil temperatures still
below normal we plan on monitoring the Bermudagrass areas prone to
winter damage over the next few weeks. If these areas look to have
permanent damage, we will access our options and make a plan for
repair. Thank you for your patience as we work to get the courses looking the best for our members and guests. We hold very high standards
at McConnell Golf and want to ensure we have the best in what we
have to offer. We look forward to seeing you out on the course!

2015 GOLF & TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The McConnell Golf, Golf and Tournament Schedule is
now available. For more information please contact the
golf staff or visit the Reserve Club News page online.
PLEASE WELCOME THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE RESERVE GOLF CLUB
Spring is an uplifting time of the year. It is a time of new life with flowers blooming, leaves returning to the trees, and golfers getting the itch
to play that first round of golf of the season. It is also the time of year
when Bermudagrass in the is starting to green up and show new life.
And this is why I am writing today. As many of you may have noticed,
there are several areas on our courses where the Bermudagrass is not
yet green, and in some areas deteriorated to the point where the soil is
exposed. The areas that exhibit this unhealthy appearance is what we
call: Winterkill. One important factor that contributes to Winterkill is
the growing preferences of our beloved Bermudagrass. Bermudagrass
has many advantages and is classified as a warm season grass (which
means it performs best in a hot climate). Since our courses are located
in the transitional zone, both warm season and cool season grasses are
an option for the turf. However, growing grass in the transitional zone
can become challenging for growing grass when the weather reaches
extremes because it gets too hot in the summer for cool season grass
(ie: Bentgrass) but can also get too cold in the winter for warm season
Bermudagrass to survive. Most Carolina winters we may see some small
areas of Winterkill damage on our courses, but this past winter was
particularly extreme which caused more wide spread harm to our warm
loving Bermudagrass. The Winterkill damage is most evident at our
courses on collars or fringes (the area just outside of the green edge).
These areas are very complicated to maintain due to their demanding
location beside the green which shoulders all the traffic from the turning of mowers and rollers. Also, the collars are normally cut lower which
makes the turf more susceptible to winter injury. We have begun replacing the wounded fringe sod at several McConnell Golf facilities and
will be working on this revival project for the next few weeks. Even
more concerning is that some of the Bermudagrass in the fairways, tees
and rough did not escape Winterkill. The hardest hit areas can be traced
to those that sustained the coldest temperatures for the longest
amount of time. Central NC ( area) appears to have the most severe
Winterkill, where all golf courses- not just those that are a part of our
McConnell Golf family- have been affected. The problematic areas are
the coldest places on the course that have limited sun exposure or too
much water to warm up to temperatures compatible with the needs of
the Bermudagrass (for example: north facing slopes, shaded areas and
positive drainage areas). Currently the soil temperatures are still below
normal (around 56 degrees). We anticipate to see more turf recovery as
the temperature rises and will continue to assess the full scope of this
winter’s damage as move into Spring. Why was Winterkill so prevalent
in the Carolinas this winter? Our courses first were exposed to
very damp, milder than normal weather in November, December, and
January; the Bermudagrass never went fully dormant with new shoots
trying to emerge even in January. February followed with severe cold
including several snow and ice events and record setting low temperatures.

upstairs patio overlooking the 18th fairway so that everyone can enjoy
these gorgeous conditions and freshly grilled food
MEMORIAL DAY SCRAMBLE
Monday, May 25th
After the golf, park the carts and sit back at the
events porch to relax and enjoy a Memorial
Day Grill Out with Burgers, Dogs, Chicken
coming hot off of the grill. Try some of the
slow-roasted Pulled Pork Barbecue or maybe
cool off with some Southern sweet tea and succulent watermelon.
Please call the Pro shop in order to reserve your spot for the scramble.
PRIME RIB BUFFET
MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH
Sunday, May 10th
Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and
you can treat your special ladies to Sunday
Brunch at the Reserve Grille. Enjoy an
extensive buffet with everything from
fruits, pastries, and breakfast fare
(including an omelet station); to fresh
stockpot soup, composed salads, entrées, and carved meats. Don’t forget the ever anticipated Chef-made desserts and Sundae bar. There will
be open seating available from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Friday, May 29th
After filling up on slow roasted, freshly carved Prime Rib, and if there’s
room; try the scratch-made soup, salads, entrées, and desserts. If your
birthday is during the month of May, members can enjoy the buffet for
free. Also, if your anniversary falls on a date during May, the Reserve
Grille would like to treat you and yours to a glass of champagne.
BLUEBERRIES
Our food of the month is blueberries;
they are my personal favorite! Blueberries are extremely nutritional! The U.S.
Department of Agriculture Human
Nutrition Center ranked blueberries #1
in antioxidant benefits compared to 40
other fruits and vegetables. In fact, just
a cup of blueberries contains about one
third of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C. Canned or frozen
blueberries lose almost all of the Vitamin C that was once present. Nutritional facts aside, this remarkable fruit
has a distinctive flavor that is a wonderful ingredient to inspire dishes and
palates. Come in for lunch at the Grille
and ask our servers about the blueberry specials this month at the Reserve.
BINGO NIGHT
Wednesday, May 20th
Make plans to bring your family and friends for a
wholesome dinner followed by several games of
Bingo. The buffet will include a Mixed Greens
Layered Salad, Fried Chicken, Meatloaf, and
more. I’m counting on our very own Glen Geuder to moderate the play if we just allow him to
throw a quick joke or two at the crowd. The
dinner starts at 5:30 pm with the Bingo to follow
SURF & TURF NIGHT
Friday, May 22nd
Members and their guests can order from
an a la carte menu showcasing several
Seafood and Steak choices. The popular
item last time was the Filet and Lobster
Tail, but you can have just one or the
other if you prefer. Perhaps Chef’s Maryland-style Lump Crab Cakes are more up
your alley, or pan-seared Halibut. Each
entrée choice on the menu comes with a
House or Caesar Salad and Chef’s buttery Cheddar Biscuits. Be sure to
check with your server about any dessert offerings we may have available from the kitchen.
FEATURED THIS MONTH:
Harvest Chicken Salad- Honey pecan chicken salad with fresh blueberries and toasted pecans; served on a croissant with baby lettuces and
choice of side item
Blueberry Crème Brulee- Rich vanilla custard filled with fresh blueberries and glazed with caramelized sugar

JUNE EVENTS
Hello everyone! June always gets me thinking about those succulent

Lemon Cookie as our lunch accompaniment. These make a wonderful
after-meal treat, but you are more than welcome to order some by the
dozen ahead of time to take home for stocking the snack pantry. The
Reserve Grille will be closed June 1-3rd during golf course maintenance
and aerification. We apologize for any inconvenience and will be happy
to serve you again when the Grille re-opens on Thursday, June 4th.
Thank you for reading and let’s have a great summer at the Reserve!

friends out to our ever popular monthly event.
A LA CARTE NIGHT
FEATURED THIS MONTH
Basil:
During the month of June, the kitchen will
be using Basil as our food of the month.
Considered by some cultures to be a
sacred or holy herb, this wonderfully
aromatic herb originates from tropical
Asia, but is commonly grown around the
world. Many basil recipes stem from roots
in Northern France and Northern Europe;
however, Italian, Mediterranean, and Thai
cuisines often use basil for flavoring since
the pungent leaves add so much to a dish.
Be sure to ask servers what culinary creations are being offered at The Reserve
Grille.
Friday, June 19th
Looking for some comfort food to warm the heart
and soul? With a limited menu featuring comfort
food dishes such as Shrimp and Grits, Fried Chicken,
Meatloaf with Brown Sauce, and beer-battered Fish and Chips. Each
entrée choice comes with a House Salad and don’t forget to check with
your server to see if Chef has any desserts made up in the back to round
out the meal
CHEF’S COOKING CLASS
Tuesday, June 23rd
This month, we will go over some healthy cooking alternatives utilizing
the Mediterranean diet. No need to be intimidated by “the class.” Everything is broken down into simple terms and explanations to allow a
house cook of any skill level to come in, learn a little, have some fun,
and eat great food. A buffet lunch will follow the “lecture” at 11:00 am
showcasing the food covered during the class. Make plans to attend
this highly requested event beginning at 9:00 am on June 23rd.
Mediterranean Chicken Panini
Pulled chicken meat, sun-dried tomatoes,
artichoke hearts, goat cheese, and fresh basil
pesto all sandwiched together between
herbed Focaccia bread and grilled
Panini-style with your choice of side item
Keep in mind that every Friday in the Grille, from
3:00-6:00 pm, anyone is welcome to saddle up to
the bar for Happy Hour Specials. Try one of our five
draft beers available for only $2.00. The new draft
choice of the month is Stella Cidre which offers a
refreshing and crisp hard apple cider, and is a pleasant change from the Angry Orchard. We also have
$1 off glasses of wine and assorted bar apps to order. Even if you are
not planning to attend the Friday night dining events, you can still come
in and socialize with other members and order from a limited bar menu.
Thanks to all for reading and I’m looking forward to the start of our
prime golfing season
PRIME RIB BUFFET
Friday, June 26th
We couldn’t have a month without juicy Prime rib,
soup, salads, and desserts. Remember that for
members, if your birthday is during the month of
June, you can enjoy the buffet on us. Also, if your
anniversary falls on a date during June, the Reserve Grille would like to treat you and yours to a
glass of champagne.
NINE & DINE

The golf shop and grille are teaming up again to offer our Nine and Dine

MCCONNELL GOLF: REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE
McConnell Golf's attention to quality
is a chief reason why each of the
courses that bear its name in North
and South Carolina consistently ranks
among the states' best. Given that
both states have been described as
having "50 Top-10 golf courses,"
earning the highest marks is not an
easy task. The North Carolina Golf
Panel is comprised of golf media
including some of the top daily newspapers in the state, as well as golf
club professionals, noted amateurs,
college golf coaches and business
leaders. Each year, the Panel provides a well-researched list of the top golf courses
in the state. North Carolina's Top 100 courses are determined by a scoring system
where panelists consider among these factors: routing, design, strategy, memorability, fairness, variety and aesthetics — all detailed in the April issue of Business
North Carolina magazine and at NCGolfPanel.com. In North Carolina's prestigious
Top 100, rankings for our McConnell Golf properties were as follows:
Old North State Club …………. No. 4 in North Carolina (trailing only Pinehurst No. 2,
Grandfather Mountain and CCNC's Dogwood Course)
No.1 ranking for Best Par 4 in the Triad
No. 3 ranking for Best Experience* in the Triad
Sedgefield Country Club's Ross Course …………….. No. 16 in North Carolina (made
one of the year's most significant from No. 22 in 2014.
ACC CHAMPIONSHIP: NOTE FROM JOHN SWOFFORD
John Swofford shared a wonderful welcome to teams, visitors, and guests who attending the ACC Men’s Championship at Old North State Club in April. Here are a few of his
words taken from the ACC brochure: “This is an exciting
time for our league as we continue to move forward as a
true Atlantic Coast Conference, with membership spanning
from New England to South Florida and beyond. Our current 15 member schools collectively make the ACC even
stronger in terms of Olympic Sports competition. In addition, the ACC geographic footprints contains the most television households and highest population of any conference nationally. It is projected that by 2030, 55 percent of
the population of the United States will lie within the
Northern and Southern states— prime ACC territory. Last
season, ACC men’s golf capped off an outstanding year with
conference champion Georgia Tech leading six league
teams into postseason play and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals in match play. The Yellow Jackets’ Ollie Schniederjans,
who claimed medalist honors in the ACC Championship
with a three-round score of 204, also tied for the top spot
in the NCAAs before losing in a playoff. The 2014 ACC title
was Georgia Tech’s fifth in six years and the Yellow Jackets’
15th overall.”
Can you share who claimed the title this year? For bonus
points, Sedgefield hosted the ACC Women’s Championship
as well. Can you share who claimed that title there as well?
A JOYOUS SOUND
No. 2 ranking for Best Par 4 in he Triad
For all those families that have a baby this year, McConnell
Golf would like to join you in welcoming the wonderful
sound of the pitter patter of tiny feet into your home with a
small gift for your newborn. Please share with us the news
