Mary Olson, our Readers’ Advisory Librarian, is the 2015 recipient of the Public Library Association’s
Allie Beth Martin Award. The award recognizes a librarian who demonstrates an “extraordinary depth of
knowledge about books and a distinguished ability to share that knowledge.” This describes Mary to a tee.
Mary has been with us since 1996. In 2012, she became our Readers’ Advisory Librarian. In 2014, as part
of our Every Reader Every Day campaign she served on the committee that teamed with United Way
to provide a copy of Wonder to every sixth grade student in Medina County. She also helped plan more
than thirty events at the libraries and helped secure the key note speaker, J.R. Martinez.
Mary shares her knowledge of books with our community through articles in local newspapers, a weekly book discussion
on Facebook, weekly e-newsletters and much more. She organizes dozens of library-led book clubs, presents book talks to
community groups and has been asked to present to staff at regional library events. She is also a huge resource for MCDL
staff. She trains on book displays and marketing, hosts a weekly Readers’ Advisory challenge for staff, and visits branches to
help refresh the library collection. Mary Olson does so much for MCDL, and amazingly she does it all at only 20 hours a
week. We are so proud of her. Olson will receive her award at the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco this June.

MCDLU
We Baby Boomers – many of us retired or semi-retired – have found we have time to pursue
activities that we want to do. Recently I started taking a vintage jewelry class at the local university.
Why? Because I thought it would be fun and make me an expert on my grandmother’s costume jewelry.
And I get my very own loupe!
But for folks who want to learn without setting foot inside a classroom, a computer and MCDL library card create
a classroom anywhere you want it to be. At MCDL University tuition is free!
MCDLU offers a wide curriculum of online classes. Want to learn how to speak French? Take a practice ACT test for
giggles. Learn computer skills – beginning to advanced – in online Word, Excel and Mac classes. Track your family’s
history in genealogy how-to classes. Take a practice GED test. There’s even a practice driver’s license test.
At our libraries this summer are events on gardening (What’s New in the Garden: Plant Trends), the arts (Watercolor
Pencil Art), fashion (The Art of Accessorizing), crafts (Glass Fusion: Glass Pendants), and a variety of computer classes.

Outreach Services Now Offers Books by Mail
MCDL’s Outreach Services offers
delivery of materials for our
members who are unable to
visit the library. We have added
Books by Mail service. This new
service is not limited to books,
but may include DVDs or Blu-rays,
audiobooks or playaways and magazines. The materials will
arrive in a member’s mailbox. Materials will be checked
out for 6 weeks, when members are finished they simply
send the bag back with their outgoing mail. To find out if
home delivery service is right for you, or someone you
care about, contact us at 330-722-2590.

Medina County District Library
delivered 6,804 pounds of
food ($11,295 value) to
Feeding Medina County
through our Food for Fines
program. Thank you to
everyone who made donations.

Retire Your Flag at MCDL
Mark Andrews, an Eagle Scout from Seville, developed
a drop off box for worn flags. Drop off your flag at any
MCDL location. Flags will be picked up by the Eagle Scouts
and retired with honor and respect.
Cleveland Clinic Children’s at Medina Hospital
and MCDL are Partnering to Promote
Literacy for Families of Newborns
Babies will receive a copy of Rock-A-Bye Baby Reader before
leaving the Family Birthing Center. The book educates
parents of reading’s importance by using traditional rhymes.
It also encourages new parents to visit their local library to
receive an additional gift and learn about our resources for
families. Funding is provided by gifts to the Children’s Fund
of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Café Coming Soon to Brunswick Library
MCDL is partnering with
Medina Creative Housing
to bring a café to Brunswick
Library. The café will be
staffed by Creative Housing
and will feature their Medina Creative Coffee blends.
This partnership will allow Creative Housing’s Enclave
employees to expand their skills from coffee production
to retail sales and provide members using Brunswick
Library with delicious coffee. Construction work on the
café began on Monday, May 4. The ribbon cutting for
the Cafe will be Monday, July 13, 1:00 pm.

Stations
MCDL is excited to announce the launch
of our new Digital Creation Stations.
Each station has a Mac computer with
Adobe Creative Cloud software. You will
now be able to edit photos or video,
create illustrations and animations,
design your own posters and much,
much more at your library.
Three stations will be available at Medina
Library and two at Brunswick Library
beginning on Mon., June 1. Walk-ins may
use the stations for half hour sessions.
