Health officials: Heavy rains result in numerous sewer overflows in Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. – Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) experienced numerous sanitary sewer overflows on
April 14, as a result of several days of heavy rain. Below is a list of locations, receiving waters and estimated amounts.
With the ground heavily saturated, more overflows are possible with additional rain.

the water ways listed above for recreational purposes because of the overflows. All seafood harvested in this
general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating. People should wash their hands before cleaning
seafood and before preparing food in general.

Heavy rains blamed for several sanitary sewer overflows in Prichard
MOBILE, Ala. – The Prichard Water Company reported that several sanitary sewer water
overflows occurred as result of heavy rainfall and street flooding that began on April 14. The
locations, estimated amount of wastewater and receiving waters are listed below.

untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.
Dr. Eichold also advises area residents to take precautions if using Gum Tree Branch for
recreational purposes. All seafood harvested in affected areas should be thoroughly cooked
before consumption. Individuals should wash their hands after cleaning any fish or other seafood
and also before preparing food.

Sanitary sewer overflow
The Utilities Board of the City of Bayou La Batre has notified the Mobile County Health
Department that heavy rainfall caused a sanitary sewage overflow on April 14 from a manhole at
the following location:

residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have

Area residents also should take precautions if using Portersville Bay for recreational purposes.
