Lecture synopsis: Due to numerous researches in the field of implant dentistry and rapid advances in medical diagnostic tools and imaging, it has leaded to a completely different era regarding dental extraction and replacement of missing tooth since 50 years ago. Conventional implant dentistry requires a healing period of 3-6 months after dental extraction. Dental implant will then be placed. Osseointegration will be completed by 6 months followed by connection of a crown. The total treatment time is very long before the patient will have his teeth fixed. Immediate dental implant is defined as an implant placement immediately after tooth extraction. This allows clinicians to reduce the number of surgeries, resulting in shorter treatment times, thus better patient satisfaction. It is suitable in only selected situations. It is highly technique sensitive thus the successful rate is relatively lower, yet still promising (~ 90%-95 %). Clinician will usually restrict this treatment only to esthetic related area such as upper anteriors. If the stability allows, a temporary prosthesis will be connected immediately so that the patient will have their function and esthetic restored immediately after the tooth has been extracted. This course will cover basic concepts of immediate implant in esthetic zone, practical tips to success, case selection and possible complications aiming to equip your knowledge and skills towards this technique. Lecture synopsis: The oral cavity is an important anatomical location playing a role in many critical processes such as digestion, respiration, and speech. The presence of exposed hard tissue (teeth) surrounded by mucosa/soft tissue is the uniqueness of the oral cavity. Abnormal changes of the oral soft tissue may arise as independent lesions or maybe manifestations of skin and other systemic disorders. General dental practitioners (GDPs) maybe the first to encounter these lesions / conditions, thus the importance of GDPs identifying any of these changes. In addition, recognizing these lesions / conditions as either variants from normal or referable and non-referable disorders would ensure that patients will be properly informed and managed. Signs and symptoms of these soft tissue disorders in the mouth ranges from pain with no obvious mucosal changes to painless situations exhibiting variations of colour and sizes of planar and exophytic lesions/conditions. This lecture will be presented as case-based problems covering issues on the role of the GDPs in diagnosis, investigations and management of these lesions. The objective of this presentation is to enhance and update the current knowledge of GDPs on recognition of these lesions / conditions, relevant investigations and their role in the early management of these lesions prior to referral to specialists in dental or medical discipline. The ability to be able to recognize and differentiate these lesions will be a pre-requisite to the ability to understand and accurately interpret the outcomes of adjunct screening tools in ‘Early detection of Oral Cancer’ and the ‘Detection of Oral Mucosal Lesions needing further management or referral to a specialists’. This workshop will include training on recognizing oral mucosal lesions and bringing participants to a higher level of lesion recognition through a well-tested method of a structured lecture-cum-discussion series. The workshop will be conducted by a team of facilitators from at least 3 Malaysian institutions being led by Prof Dr Rosnah Binti Zain, Head of Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre, University of Malaya. 5TH JAN 2015 Page 1 2. 10 JUNE 2015 (WEDNESDAY) Immediate Implants in the Aesthetic Zone: Live surgery & Hands-on Workshop 9.00am5.00pm Dr Alfred Lau Sze Lok UKM (Klinik Bedah Mulut) Early bird: RM900 Late Reg: RM1100 On site: RM 1300 (25pax) Due to numerous researches in the field of implant dentistry and rapid advances in medical diagnostic tools and imaging, it has leaded to a completely different era regarding dental extraction and replacement of missing tooth since 50 years ago. Conventional implant dentistry requires a healing period of 3-6 months after dental extraction. Dental implant will then be placed. Osseointegration will be completed by 6 months followed by connection of a crown. The total treatment time is very long before the patient will have his teeth fixed. Synopsis Immediate dental implant is defined as an implant placement immediately after tooth extraction. This workshop will cover basic concepts of immediate implant in esthetic zone, practical tips to success, case selection and possible complications aiming to equip your knowledge and skills towards this technique. We have included a live surgical demonstration for you so that you could have a better understanding for the exact procedure in a real clinical situation. A practical hands on will be followed to further enhance your memory of how the basic step could be performed and the technique of making an immediate temporary crown. 3. 11 JUNE 2015 (THURSDAY) Synopsis Adjunctive Screening Tools for Early detection of Oral Cancer’ 9.00am5.00pm Prof Dr Rosnah Binti Zain Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Malaya RM150 (Maximum 20 pax) Highly recommended that participants have attended or been trained on Criteria for Conventional Oral Examination/Early Detection of Oral Cancer’. Good knowledge on clinical presentations of normal and variants of normal oral mucosa and abnormal oral mucosal changes will be a pre-requisite to the understanding of this workshop. All oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) belong to a family of disorders characterized by certain genetic & morphological alterations amongst which some have an increased potential for malignant transformation. It is important for all clinicians to recognize potentially malignant changes in oral mucosa through visual and tactile examination as this can significantly reduce the burden of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Two of the adjunct tool/method to conventional oral examination (COE) in detecting OPMDs is an Autofluorescence System and an Oral Cytobrush Technique with Image Cytometry in determining the DNA content of the lesion. This workshop aims to introduce the clinicians to fluorescence visualisation of the normal and abnormal oral mucosa through this Autofluorescent System and the Oral Cytobrush-cum-Image Cytometry DNA Content Analysis as adjunct screening tools in early detection of OPMDs 4. 11 JUNE 2015 (THURSDAY) Synopsis 5. 12 JUNE 2015 (FRIDAY) The Dental Operating Microscope and Advanced Endodontic Retreatment Techniques 9.00am5.00pm Dr Franscesco Mannocci UKM (Simulation Laboratory) Early bird: RM700 Late Reg: RM850 On site: 1050 (24pax) A comprehensive simulated microscope powered hands-on course with live demonstration of how to improve ergonomics, patient positioning and tips on visualisation of various regions of the mouth.
