dentistry especially immediate implant in the esthetic zone, orthognathic surgeries
and cleft lip and palate surgeries.
Lecture synopsis:
Due to numerous researches in the field of implant dentistry and rapid advances in
medical diagnostic tools and imaging, it has leaded to a completely different era
regarding dental extraction and replacement of missing tooth since 50 years ago.
Conventional implant dentistry requires a healing period of 3-6 months after dental
extraction. Dental implant will then be placed. Osseointegration will be completed by
6 months followed by connection of a crown. The total treatment time is very long
before the patient will have his teeth fixed.
Immediate dental implant is defined as an implant placement immediately after tooth
extraction. This allows clinicians to reduce the number of surgeries, resulting in
shorter treatment times, thus better patient satisfaction. It is suitable in only selected
situations. It is highly technique sensitive thus the successful rate is relatively lower,
yet still promising (~ 90%-95 %). Clinician will usually restrict this treatment only to
esthetic related area such as upper anteriors. If the stability allows, a temporary
prosthesis will be connected immediately so that the patient will have their function
and esthetic restored immediately after the tooth has been extracted.
This course will cover basic concepts of immediate implant in esthetic zone, practical
tips to success, case selection and possible complications aiming to equip your
knowledge and skills towards this technique.

University of Malmö, Sweden
He is currently an Associate Professor of Implant Dentistry at the Faculty of
Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong.
He has to his credits, More than 60 publications in international peer reviewed
journals
Dr Nikos present research revolves around complications with dental implants and
in particular the management of Peri-implant inflammations, bio-technical
complications and bone regeneration and biology
Lecture synopsis:
An evidence based update of latest decision making factors with regards to patient
related indications and contraindications for dental implant treatments.
Treatment with dental implants is increasingly seen as the golden standard for
replacing missing teeth and the indication for using dental implants is expanding. Due
to advances in technology but also our understanding of biological mechanisms, we
can today offer safe and effective treatments to a large patient pool. Nevertheless,
there remain a significant amount of contraindications and risks associated with
implant treatments, even in the most sophisticated practice environments. Much of
the complications and long term problems we witness in implant treatments can be
attributed to improper risk assessment and patient selection.
This seminar will review the latest evidence on the systemic patient factors that are
currently associated with increased risk with regards to implant treatment. The
seminar will use latest research evidence and attempt to translate research into up to
date treatment strategies, which can help clinicians to make well-informed decisions
on day-to-day clinical scenario. Emphasis will be placed on current debates such as
managing the risks posed by novel pharmaceuticals used for the treatment of
osteoporosis, assessing the role of the history of Periodontitis and also the
importance of carefully assessing behavioral factors such as patient’s expectations.
Learning objectives :
•
Which is the current consensus for systemic risk assessment of the candidate
for implant therapy ? Which are the major risks ?
•
Does medication received for Osteoporosis treatment impose a risk for impant
treatments and what is an evidence-based decision making in such cases ?
•
Does the History of Periodontitis pose a threat to long term success of implant
treatments ?
•
Can behavioral aspects of the patient pose a risk to the success of implant
therapy and how can we assess our patients in this aspects ?

Lecture synopsis:
The oral cavity is an important anatomical location playing a role in many critical
processes such as digestion, respiration, and speech. The presence of exposed hard
tissue (teeth) surrounded by mucosa/soft tissue is the uniqueness of the oral cavity.
Abnormal changes of the oral soft tissue may arise as independent lesions or maybe
manifestations of skin and other systemic disorders. General dental practitioners
(GDPs) maybe the first to encounter these lesions / conditions, thus the importance of
GDPs identifying any of these changes. In addition, recognizing these lesions /
conditions as either variants from normal or referable and non-referable disorders
would ensure that patients will be properly informed and managed. Signs and
symptoms of these soft tissue disorders in the mouth ranges from pain with no
obvious mucosal changes to painless situations exhibiting variations of colour and
sizes of planar and exophytic lesions/conditions.
This lecture will be presented as case-based problems covering issues on the role of
the GDPs in diagnosis, investigations and management of these lesions. The objective
of this presentation is to enhance and update the current knowledge of GDPs on
recognition of these lesions / conditions, relevant investigations and their role in the
early management of these lesions prior to referral to specialists in dental or medical
discipline.

Orofacial pain (OFP) can arise from different regions and etiologies. It includes a
number of clinical problems involving the masticatory musculature, the TMJ, the
trigeminal neuropathic pains, neurovascular disorders. It is a multifaceted health
problem. It impacts the quality of life of the sufferer dramatically. Like many other
forms of chronic pain it bears deleterious effects upon the quality of life as well as
psychological and physiological well being. A multidisciplinary pain management
approach should be considered for the optimal treatment of orofacial pain disorders
ie. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological modalities taking into
consideration the interplay amongst distinct psychological and physiological
mechanisms that exacerbate the pain which may offer some possible insights into
effective treatment outcomes

Lecture synopsis (1):
Dentists have for many years prescribed a significant amount of antibiotics, in the UK
for example, they account for 10% of all antibiotics prescribed within primary health
care. However the danger of inappropriate prescribing has emerged and the risk of
contributing to the increasing challenge of antibiotics resistance, a worldwide
problem. Thus the time has come to re-examine the role of antibiotic prescribing in
dentistry. This talk will explore the indications for antibiotic prescribing exploring the
use of antibiotics in a therapeutic and more controversially a prophylactic function,
especially with the emerging evidence since the removal of antibiotic protection in
dentistry against infective endocarditis in the UK.

Recognising the clinically normal, variants from normal and abnormal changes of the oral mucosa through Conventional
Oral Examination (COE) is the mainstay of Early Detection of Oral Cancer. The ability to be able to recognize and
differentiate these lesions will be a pre-requisite to the ability to understand and accurately interpret the outcomes of
adjunct screening tools in ‘Early detection of Oral Cancer’ and the ‘Detection of Oral Mucosal Lesions needing further
management or referral to a specialists’.
This workshop will include training on recognizing oral mucosal lesions and bringing participants to a higher level of
lesion recognition through a well-tested method of a structured lecture-cum-discussion series. The workshop will be
conducted by a team of facilitators from at least 3 Malaysian institutions being led by Prof Dr Rosnah Binti Zain, Head of
Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre, University of Malaya.

Due to numerous researches in the field of implant dentistry and rapid advances in medical diagnostic tools and imaging,
it has leaded to a completely different era regarding dental extraction and replacement of missing tooth since 50 years
ago.
Conventional implant dentistry requires a healing period of 3-6 months after dental extraction. Dental implant will then
be placed. Osseointegration will be completed by 6 months followed by connection of a crown. The total treatment time
is very long before the patient will have his teeth fixed.
Synopsis
Immediate dental implant is defined as an implant placement immediately after tooth extraction. This allows clinicians to
reduce the number of surgeries, resulting in shorter treatment times, thus better patient satisfaction. It is suitable in only
selected situations. It is highly technique sensitive thus the successful rate is relatively lower, yet still promising (~ 90%-95
%). Clinician will usually restrict this treatment only to esthetic related area such as upper anteriors. If the stability allows,
a temporary prosthesis will be connected immediately so that the patient will have their function and esthetic restored
immediately after the tooth has been extracted.
This workshop will cover basic concepts of immediate implant in esthetic zone, practical tips to success, case selection
and possible complications aiming to equip your knowledge and skills towards this technique. We have included a live
surgical demonstration for you so that you could have a better understanding for the exact procedure in a real clinical
situation. A practical hands on will be followed to further enhance your memory of how the basic step could be
performed and the technique of making an immediate temporary crown.

Highly recommended that participants have attended or been trained on Criteria for Conventional Oral
Examination/Early Detection of Oral Cancer’. Good knowledge on clinical presentations of normal and variants of normal
oral mucosa and abnormal oral mucosal changes will be a pre-requisite to the understanding of this workshop.
All oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) belong to a family of disorders characterized by certain genetic &
morphological alterations amongst which some have an increased potential for malignant transformation. It is important
for all clinicians to recognize potentially malignant changes in oral mucosa through visual and tactile examination as this
can significantly reduce the burden of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Two of the adjunct tool/method to conventional oral examination (COE) in detecting OPMDs is an Autofluorescence
System and an Oral Cytobrush Technique with Image Cytometry in determining the DNA content of the lesion. This
workshop aims to introduce the clinicians to fluorescence visualisation of the normal and abnormal oral mucosa through
this Autofluorescent System and the Oral Cytobrush-cum-Image Cytometry DNA Content Analysis as adjunct screening
tools in early detection of OPMDs

Synopsis
As dental science evolves through advances in research, education and training, dental surgeons are providing more services with
increasing effectiveness and efficiency to patients.
Non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments, being minimally invasive with little downtime, are being sought by people seeking to delay
the signs of aging.
The range of prefessions offering these services are expanding. A progressive dentist will be aware that knowledge in dento-facial
aesthetics is an additional tool for comprehensive patient management. This may be applied synergistically to enhance treatment
outcomes in aesthetic dentistry.
It is an exciting time for dental professions to expand their knowledge in this area.
The aim of the course is to introduce non-surgical facial aesthetic procedures appropriate to dental practice. It is targeted for dental
surgeons without experience in the use of botolinum toxin and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

15 JUNE 2015
(MONDAY)
Contemporary aesthetic dentistry requires an approach that integrates scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and team communication. The
reestablishment of optimum oral health, function, and dentofacial esthetics with teeth and implants often is not accomplished because there
are no systems to guide the process of rehabilitation. Excellence can become more predictable with the establishment of an evidence based
methodical approach, having the goals of quality control and information management. This presentation will review key elements for
developing simple and comprehensive treatment plans and discuss clinical relevant aspects for diagnosis, treatment planning and longevity
such as digital smile design, restoration of structurally compromised teeth, and occlusion.
▪Smart preparations: from prepless to full coverage: multiple approaches for a customized solution; the link between Color
Selection and Prep Design: “Do the Math”.
▪Impressions: predictable and consistent high quality impressions on teeth and implants; evidence-based update
and clinical tips for the best results
▪ Critical and practical aspects of occlusion: OVD, maxillomandibular relationships and guidance - what the
clinician needs to know? A step- by-step technique for treatment stability and longevity.

Learn how to utilize skeletal anchorage for orthodontics.
In this workshop an overview and the pro’s and con’s; advantages and limitations of different skeletal anchorage options is
shown: TADs, bone-anchors and bone-plates: what to use, when and how.
A lots of colleagues are reluctant to place bone-plates or TADs.
Knowledge of anatomical structures and basic surgical skills are indeed needed for these procedures. During this workshop, the
complete workflow of bone-plates and TADs placement is shown and exercised on plastic skull model.
The surgical skills needed (flap design; suturing techniques; avoiding complications) are shown and trained on goat’s jaw and
chicken’s breast.
The hands-on:
On plastic skull model:
- Placement of TADs and bone-plates
- How to engage orthodontic forces with skeletal anchorage
- Line of force with skeletal anchorage
On goat’s jaw & chicken’s breast:
- Flap design & basic suturing skills
- How to avoid critical anatomical structures
- Dealing with complications
Learning objectives:
- Indications of TADs, bone-plates and screws
- Basic surgical skills: incision; flap design and suturing
- Selection of instruments
- Placement of TADs and bone-plates at the correct location
- Avoiding and dealing with complications
-
