GOLF
Men’s and Women’s
Match Play Championships
The 2015 Match Play Championship will begin competition in May. Players
will be placed in flights according to their May 1st handicap. A player’s
“seed” in each flight will be based on handicap, lowest handicaps receiving
the lowest seed placements, etc.
Matches will be governed by USGA rules. Players will receive full handicaps
with USGA adjustments for players competing from different tees. Strokes
will be allocated off the lower of the two handicaps in each match.
Players will be responsible for scheduling their matches. HOWEVER, all
matches must be played by a pre-determined date. Failure to do so will
result in disqualification.
MATCH PLAY is the truest test of amateur competitions and is more fun
than stroke play. Why? Because if you can make a big number it’s only one
hole and does not take you out of the competition.

In order to regain some of those lost days, the golf
course will open on Mondays for play at 9 AM. Golf
carts will be required for all players until 1 PM, when
walking will be permitted. The cart rate on Mondays
will be $12.50/rider for 18 holes and $7/rider for 9

Communiqué from the MCC Green Committee
Meadowbrook Country Club
Board of Directors
The Chicken Match has been played weekly at MCC for roughly the last 10
years. It is a Wednesday match started by four of our most well known
habitués of the Men’s Grill. The creators of the Chicken Match are Jiffy,
Bushead, Cookiemaker
and Double-A-Donnie.
Now you can call him Double
Chad

him smart, handsome or personable. But, ya doesn’t have to call him DoubleA-Donnie and ya doesn’t
have to
call him
Jack Daniels, because that is not his

preferred beverage.
D.J. DeCicco – Secretary (Finance)
I have seen more passion displayed at the end of some of the Chicken Matches
than I have seen after many high dollar losses. The Chicken Match is played
Lisa Cox – Technology
for Chicken Wings. If the losing team is beaten by at least 5 cuts, they have to
buy Chicken Wings. I have seen Cookiemaker blink back tears of shame and
Douglas Malone – Golf
joy; Jiffy pout over the teams being unfair, even though they never change
when all four are available, and Bushead, threaten to suffocate people with his
Roger Minter – Tennis
hat when they inquire about the results after he has lost. This is no idle threat
since his hat, sitting on someone else’s head is basically resting on their
Polly Moore – House
shoulders. Other’s play when needed, such as Chief and Ben “Murf” Moore,
when one of the principals is unavailable. But, the Chicken Match was defined
Ginny Riddle – Membership
by the original four.
Lori
Strobl
– the
Membership
After a recent Chicken
Match
I heard
four gizzard heads talking about
warm weather coming, the golf course getting green and the fact that “just
BillweWisegarver
– Greens
when it starts to get nice,
go out and punch
up the greens.” They know,
and all the rest of us know that it must be done each spring for the “good for
Cathy
Witherspoon
– Pool
& Social holes are
the greens”. But
what exactly
does it really
do? Aerification
punched into greens and sometimes fairways several times a year depending on
climate, geography and grass type to help the greens dry, to promote drainage
and to allow for oxygen-gas exchange. Oxygen is more important to soil and
grass than water. Turf grass is similar to people in this regard. If, Jiffy stops
breathing and Bushead stops drinking water at the same time, who will last
longer? It is the same reason that farmers till their fields. They want to
provide relief from soil compaction, get better water infiltration and increase
the amount of oxygen getting to the root zones. Tilling the greens would be
awesome for all of these reasons, but the Chicken Match and all other play
would be discontinued for much of the year while the greens are in furrows.
Therefore, a less-invasive method, “punching the greens” is used.
There is no other agronomic activity done to the course that is more
important. Aerification can be done by coring, solid tine, water injection,
slicing and spiking. All allow air to enter the soil, alleviate compaction and
improve root mass. It has been proven that coring works best at MCC. It
should also be noted that every course has different soil and growing
9
conditions. What MCC does should not be
compared to what other Richmond courses might
do. For example, MCC uses growth inhibitors to
help control poa annua grass. Because of this we
tend to aerate a bit later so that warmer weather and
fertilizer can help speed the recovery process.
It is a necessary evil and a very labor intensive and
thankless process. We hate it, and it is very stressful
on our great Superintendent, Steve Weedwacker.
Steve is always concerned about the results, because
healing does not depend on him, but on higher
powers that control the weather. Spring aerification
typically takes longer to heal due to shorter days and
cooler temperatures at night. Add to this, the fact
that the entire membership is anxious for warm
weather and great playing conditions. So
remember, if you lose chicken or $3.00 because
your putt hit an aerification hole, hang in there.
Without aerification, the chances of our greens
failing later in the year, grows exponentially. That is
the meat on the chicken bones.
~ Bill Wisegarver, Green Committee Chair

2015 Board of Directors Election
The responsibility for maintaining Meadowbrook as a strong and respected
club that is attractive to those seeking a quality country club experience is
shared by all members and staff. We are fortunate to have a quality
management and service staff as well as members who are committed to
our Club. In addition to our elected leaders, the Board of Directors, many
dedicated individuals serve on nine standing committees and a Nominating
Committee.
We must begin the process of replacing the four BOD members whose
terms expire in September 2015 and we need everyone's help.
The Nominating Committee will begin meeting in April and will be
recruiting candidates. Please send your recommendations for potential
BOD candidates to the Nominating Committee. If you are interested in
serving, please share that as well. We look forward to your feedback and
interest in the process.
Look for announcements posted throughout the Club during the next
several months. Additional information as well as nomination forms are
available at the Club office and from the Nominating Committee Chair,
Aubrey Lindsey, at [email protected] or the General Manager, Eric
Papendorp, at [email protected].
