For over 30 years, the Japanese American National Museum has charted a bold and visionary course
to share the story of Japanese Americans and demonstrate how that story can enlighten people of all
backgrounds about democracy, civil liberties, and social justice. The story is one that moves us all toward
common ground. The 2015 Gala Dinner will look back on the courage and passion that JANM’s founding
required and celebrate how the museum continues to innovate as it tells both historical and contemporary
stories and spurs dialogue among people of all generations and cultures.

Distinguished Medal of Honor for
Lifetime Achievement and Public Service
From a childhood in America’s WWII concentration camps to his groundbreaking role as Sulu on the
Star Trek television series to his rise as an enduring pop culture icon and respected civil rights activist,
George Takei personifies the infinite possibilities of his generation and the generations that follow.
In recognition of his decades-long standing as an inspirational role model as well as his commitment
and contributions to the Japanese American National Museum, which include ongoing service on its
Board of Trustees, George Takei will be presented with the Japanese American National Museum’s
Distinguished Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement and Public Service.
