Techniques to improve proximal control, sustained postural movements against gravity, and symmetrical alignment will be demonstrated through use of videotapes, as well as patient demonstrations and practice labs. Participants will learn treatment strategies that can be applied in various practice settings to improve functional performance and independence in children of all ages (infants through school age) with hypotonia. Dealing primarily with topics related to the cerebral palsy and other neurologic disorders, her classes include general movement labs and cover such topics as treatment of hypotonia, using ball techniques for treatment, and treating the infant population. In addition to her continuing education classes, Ms. Hypes has produced a series of educational DVDs and published a book, Facilitating Development & Sensorimotor Function, to assist therapists in the treatment of children. Also, her new book entitled Heads Up On Hypotonia was recently published. Barbara Hypes received her Bachelor’s degree in 1981 from Indiana University in therapy. She has assisted in teaching the pediatric 8 week Neuro-Development treatment course and has contributed an appendix to the book Improving Upper Body Control-An Approach to Assessment of Tonal Dysfunction by Regi Boehme, and 2 sections of Parents Articles for Early Intervention. Ms. Hypes has worked in a variety of physical therapy programs in the Milwaukee area where she is currently in private practice treating all ages.
