Internationally acclaimed Artist Larry Hersberger lives in Thomasville, NC and creates from his studio
in High Point, NC. Known as the Magic of Art and Light, his work has been internationally licensed
and selected in the prestigious PPA IPC Loan Collection Book. He is currently writing his book Magic
of Art & Light and has created numerous unique “one of a kind” children’s books for clients throughout
America.
Using a combination of skills which range from painting, sculpting, photography, graphic design and
digital art, set design and writing, Larry creates artwork that is quite unique. His theatrical and storytelling technique coupled with his wide skill set expands the boundaries of artistic creation. The
resulting artwork truly stops people and captures their imagination and complete attention.
In his lifetime, Larry has created for clients in 51 countries around the world and has lectured in 5

Wow … it has been an amazing journey over the past years filled with
many challenges and some great accomplishments alike. Through
each, we continued to “keep moving forward”, learning and growing
as professionals and individuals. Our organization is positioned better than ever to be even more of a leader within not only the region but
nationally. We continue to push the envelope with our approach and
implementation of new ways to bring the very best to our members.
While there are things that I wasn’t able to bring to complete fruition
during my term, I am very pleased with what we have done and look
forward to seeing how the organization continues to grow with our new

PPA Imaging USA was held in Nashville, TN this past January and there is
lots of news to share as a few of our very own members deserve a huge round
of applause for their accomplishments.
Congratulations go out to:
Andrea (Andy) Joliat, M.Photog., CPP, Mark Sweeney, M.Photog.Cr., Ed
Pedi, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, Alice Pepplow all of whom earned Silver Medalist
Photographer of the Year Awards for having achieved the inclusion of one
photographic image into PPA’s Loan Collection and three images into PPA’s
General Collection.
Ella Carlson, M.Photog.Cr., CPP earned Gold Medalist Photographer of the
Year Award for having the distinction of two photographic images included in
the PPA Loan Collection and two images in PPA’s General Collection. Ella also
received The Imaging Excellence Award. This award is given when someone
gets 13 loan prints after they’ve gotten their M.Photog. degree. WOW – what an
achievement, Ella!
Randy Brogen, Cr.Photog., CPP earned the Platinum Medalist Photographer of
the Year Award. Platinum Medalists have three images included in the PPA Loan
Collection and one image in PPA’s General Collection.
Yedi Koeshendi and Paula Swift, M.Photog., CPP earned Bronze Medalist
Photographer of the Year Awards for having all four images accepted into PPA’s
General Collection.
A few degrees were bestowed on members at PPA IUSA this year as well. Ella
Carlson received her Master Artist Degree. Ella is the first in New England to
get the Master Artist degree! Andrea (Andy) Joliat received her Photographic
Craftsman Degree. Dan Doke and Paula Swift received their Masters of
Photography Degrees. WOOHOO Folks! Congratulations to all of you for your
hard work and dedication to your craft.
By the way a few of our 2015 Convention speakers also got their degrees and we
need to give them a shout-out too - Ted Linczak and his wife Rachel both got
their Master of Photography and Craftman Degrees at the same time (what a huge
accomplishment!) and Bob Akers received his Master of Photography Degree.
Big Congrats…you all did a wonderful job at our convention this year!
Our tireless, dedicated PPAM member Joyce Holt has been appointed MA
Director to PPANE. Congrats, Joyce!
Congratulations to Patricia Walsh Slaven of Hanover for her recent appointment
to the Board of Directors for the North River Arts Society.
Our deepest condolences go out to long time member and former PPAM
President Diana Mirasolo, M.Photog.Cr., CPP on the passing of her beloved
father William Hughson in January.
Our sympathies also go out to Lee Geishecker on the passing of her beloved
father, Frank Geishecker and to Susan White on the passing of her beloved

A Word from Hospitality

As hospitality chair, I would just like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone
who brought in donations and to those who helped set-up and break down every
night. Once again it was a success and one of the highlights of the convention.
The only thing that was more plentiful than the drinks and food was the conversation and laughter. The hospitality suite has always been one of my favorite
parts of the convention as you can make connections with others that can truly
share and understand the crazy life we lead behind the camera.
As I am no doubt the brawn behind hospitality, that room wouldn’t be anything close to what it becomes
without the brains, organization, attention to detail and that unmistakable feminine touch that my wife Gail
Lucozzi provides so I definitely can’t leave out a big hug and thanks to her. Thanks babe!
So, thank you once again to all that came and participated, contributed, and shared their company with us!

Thanks from Melvin Guante - PPAM Convention Chair
On March 2nd we concluded our annual convention at the Plymouth Radisson.
Nancy, after visiting you at your studio you convinced me to come back to PPAM
and take on this new endeavor. I thought I would never be able to pull this off. With
your help and guidance it was easy to do. You kept me on track and made sure I got
things done. Thank you!
I would like to thank our awesome volunteers that made it such a success. Lisa
Tommaney, you were just wonderful in recruiting and organizing the ‘TO DO’ list.
Everyone stepped up to the plate and made sure that jobs were done.
I had a big smile all weekend and it was because of the contagious smiles and
energy at the front desk. Diane, Joyce and Joanne, along with the group of
volunteers were there greeting members and guests alike. We had close to 200 registered prior to the start of
convention. Over 160 came to the desk all weekend. There were no long lines and everything was well
organized. You ladies rock!!
The Chair Persons of the day: Patricia, Connie, Susan and Andreia. You ladies were in the conference room
and made sure the programs went on without a hitch. The speakers and the attendees were well taken care.
Well done.
The unsung heroes that work in the background and miss most of the convention, who is that you ask? That
is print Co-Chairs, Steve & Patrick - your committee was very well run. You got a great judging panel. You
managed all those prints and continued the wonderful job by your predecessor.
Oh my, what can I say about hospitality? After a long day of learning you could unwind in the hospitality suite.
Gail & George - you guys had the room filled with love – everyone had a great time and it was easy to unwind.
But you guys went above and beyond and also put together the awards party. Great job!
So as you can see it takes a lot of people to make a convention a success. This convention was so wonderful, on
behalf of myself and all the membership and guests please accept a heartwarming THANK YOU for a job well
done!
We had our vendors once again give us tremendous support. This made our convention possible and afforded us
the opportunity to present an awesome lineup of speakers. The topics were diverse and can help our members
bring their photography to new levels.
We invited like-minded photographers and photo enthusiasts to join us and their compliments keep coming in.
“Warm welcoming fun group.” “I am proud to belong to PPAM. You are my extended family.” “The Convention
is home coming.” These were a just a couple of things they said about PPAM.
I had so much fun putting together the convention that I have agreed to do it once again. I want our 2016
convention to be bigger, better, stronger. I counted on everyone to make 2015 successful and it was. So I will
be knocking on your door or email inbox asking for your help with 2016. Thank you to each and every one of
you volunteers, vendors, speakers, hotel staff and especially you – our members! THANK YOU!

PPAM 2015 Image Competition & Awards
Steve Sedman and Patrick Brosnan served as this year’s Image Competition Co-Chairs.
We had a great time showcasing the hard work of our members
at the annual Image Competition. Steve and I are so grateful to
everyone who pitched in and helped and all of the participants.
Our Judging panel of Robert Akers, Madonna Lovett Repeta,
Steve Bedell, Carol Fabrizio, Jeff Dachowski, MaryAnn Talamo, and Jury Chair Ed Pedi, looked at close to 200 competition
images over the course of two days. We thank them heartily for
their service. We wanted to share some numbers with you. We
had 188 paid entries with a budget of 250. The 40 participants’
entry breakdown is as follows:

co-chairs soon so that the planning can begin and the load evened out over the full year.

PPAM 2015 Convention Wrap-up
A note from our Convention Hotel Chair

Hey you guys...can I say how grateful I am to call you all friends?!
I’m pretty sure just about every one of our members that attended the
convention actually volunteered to do something. That’s amazing. It’s
astounding. It’s WONDERFUL! There’s just one more thing I’m going to ask you to
do. Well, for now anyway...Tell a friend about how great this group is. Tell a friend
about why they should consider joining. Tell a friend about the great speakers we have
all year and that AWESOME convention. Tell a friend...they’re just plain ol’ missing out if they don’t hang with us. The only thing that could make our group better is
more of the group! Thanks everyone for all your help at the convention. It went great
despite a few hiccups from the hotel.
Speaking of hotels...
We’ll be moving the convention to a new spot next year. We are in the process of
searching out the best deals possible. Though we have enjoyed great service and
prices from the Radisson in Plymouth for many years we feel it’s time to let them fix
a few things up before we go back. The Radisson is in the process of being sold so I am sure the new owners will do an
outstanding job in renovations and staffing. We’ll let you know where our new location will be soon! You are why I love
PPAM! You’re the best!
VP of Membership Thank You

Membership got off to a great start on Friday with the majority of PPAM
members checking in throughout the day. This allowed us to tweak the
protocol for Saturday’s free admission when 103 photographers attended
the programs. I was grateful to have Susan Asaro and Lee Geishecker at
the registration table during the morning rush to get everyone signed in and
directed to the programs.
Kudos to the volunteer coordinator, Lisa Tommaney, whose quest to make
volunteering easy with the online sign-up, which was wonderfully successful.
The convention’s security was top notch under the helm of Keitha Hassell. The permanent photo ID badges, and the
addition of the 2015 ribbon, along with the Leitz label maker, aided the security team to keep tabs on who should be in
the seminars. Thank you to all those that helped as this year’s security team: Jeff Baker, Lauren Cloutier, Nancy Green,
Laurie Lizotte, Andreia Makkas, Karin Nystrom (new member), Susan Ogar, Catherine Pfau, Cassandra Sullivan,
& Joe Turner.
The totals for the Convention are 144 attendees of which 66 were members and 78 non-members. There were 4 new
members voted in, and 3 more have applied since Monday. The large turnout of non PPAM members is directly related to
the efforts of Nancy Green, Melvin Guante, and Linda Pedi. They were instrumental in notifying the local photography
groups, clubs and meet-ups with PPAM’s willingness to share a day of learning at no charge. The totals show that the
message was well received!
I’m most thankful for the guidance given by Joyce Holt throughout the entire year. Her timely responses to my multitude
of emails and phone calls helped immeasurably in my endeavor as membership v.p.

PPAM 2015 Convention Wrap-up
PPAM Service and Degree Merits

PPAM awards two degrees to members based on their achievements in Print
Competition (metals are hung on a blue ribbon) and their dedication and service
to the organization (metals are hung on a green ribbon). Members who earn both
degrees wear their metal on a red ribbon. With each additional 50 merits in
service or print competition, members add a star to their ribbon.
While some members are close to earning their Service Achievement Degree,
there were no Service Degrees awarded this year. Service Merit applications can
be found on the website and are accepted all year long. Members are encouraged
to apply.
This year, three ribbons and three stars were awarded for Photographic Excellence. Please join me in
congratulating Randy Brogen, Yedi Koeshendi and Andreia Makkas on earning 50 PPAM Print Merits and
their Photographic Excellence Degree. Randy Brogen earned his in 2014 but was not properly acknowledged.
Congratulations also go to Cassandra Sullivan, who was awarded her first Photographic Excellence Star after
earning 100 PPAM Print Merit points; Ella Carlson, also earning her first Photographic Excellence Star with
100 PPAM Print Merit points and finally Ed Pedi, who has earned over 300 PPAM Print Merit points, received
his fifth Star for Photographic Excellence.

PPAM 2015 Convention Wrap-up

This year’s convention was truly fantastic! Once again, I was so impressed with
how many members (and sometimes non-members!) were willing to take on
all kinds of jobs – some big and some small - to benefit the whole association,
this made for an outstanding convention for all. Whether it was your first time
helping out in a small way, or whether you are helping out in such a significant way that you wonder whether your full time job is actually working for
PPAM (Nancy, Melvin, Susan … and probably others :-)), I hope that you too,
know how much the collective group appreciates and values what you do. If I,
or someone on the board, did not remember to thank you over the convention
weekend, please accept this THANK YOU! now. We really and truly appreciate
everything that our members contribute in the way of time and talent
(and sometimes treasure too!) to make PPAM an outstanding organization.
All that said, at the risk of leaving someone out (which is something I hope never to do, but somehow seems to
happen every now and then) I’d like to thank the following folks for their volunteerism to PPAM this past year,

As the Volunteer Chairperson, I am proud to say that for everyone who would like to contribute, there are
opportunities to do just that. From the smaller time commitment opportunities (usually around the convention)
to the larger responsibilities at the convention; the year round planning and board positions, and everything in
between, we have all kinds of needs, and fortunately for us, all kinds of folks who are stepping in to fill those
roles. For those of you who are new to PPAM, or new to being part of the Volunteer Committee, THANK
YOU, for your willingness to be an active member of our all-volunteer organization. Please know that you are
welcome to get involved as much or as little as your current situation allows. For those of you who have been
“at it” a bit (or much!) longer, THANK YOU! Without your consistent dedication, PPAM would not operate
as efficiently as it does, and would not have the organizational experience to be able to run the many amazing
programs that we do. People get involved because they know they can make a difference and usually have fun
while doing it. And I hope that all of you who have volunteered really and truly know that you do MAKE A
DIFFERENCE! THANK YOU!

recognizing volunteer activity. It is the PPAM Degree Program, and requires just a tiny bit of work on your part.
In fact, it is just a simple form that you fill out that will allow PPAM to track your volunteer work through the
years, allowing you to earn service merits. Once you’ve reached a certain number of service merits, you will
earn a PPAM degree. Gail Lucozzi is the Degree Chairperson and can answer any questions you may have.
Remember – you need to fill out the forms in order for the records to be accurate. Please think about it, as your
PPAM friends would love to be able to recognize and thank you formally for all the work you do to make this a
wonderful association!
Last but not least, for those of you who are not able to be actively involved in volunteering at the current time,
know that that is ok too! Everyone has times in their lives when they are able to be more involved, and times
when they have to step back. Just remember, the next time you see a PPAM volunteer, try to remember to say

Meet Lee Geishecker
1. How many years in business?
I own VIEW Photography (aka VagabondView Photography) with
Stefanie Egan; we have been in business for 10 years. Over the past 18
months, we have upgraded our studio space to a very visible location in
Falmouth on the Cape and have reaped the benefits!
2. Why photography?
Photography has been a passion of mine as far back as I can remember.
Whether it was learning with my first camera (a Pentax K1000) or, even
earlier as a child, I discovered I was drawn to Life magazine and
National Geographic and any museum, book, or magazine that had photos
that called to me with their beauty and story-telling. Once I realized that
I was decent in telling my own stories with my own photographs, I was
able to combine the passion with the talent and the desire.
3. Favorite piece of photographic equipment and why?
My 70-200mm lens. Fast, magnificent detail, adjusts to lighting (or lack thereof) beautifully. And a lens like
this allows you to step back and let your subjects do their own thing, without being obtrusive. This lens
provides diversity - from portraits and weddings to sports and other events.
4. What’s your best piece of advice to someone just starting out?
Don’t ever lose sight of your passion and focus - that should always be what drives you. As much as you
shouldn’t let the critics get to you or deter you, you can always learn from the criticism and the failings. And
always keep an open mind to creativity, no matter the source. Sometimes the source may surprise you.
5. Best & worst moment on a job?
Worst moment: at a wedding, the groom started off fine, and as the weather was threatening their outside
ceremony, his mood became foul and took it out on the one person he had spent the most time with on his
wedding day - me! Right down to the trolley driver getting confused on directions to where we were shooting
formal photos, and the groom (blaming me for some reason) screaming at me in front of the entire bridal party,
the bride and the parents. Keeping my cool while biting my tongue was a challenge. Now, years later, we
photograph their family every year and he and his wife are two of our biggest fans!
Best moment: this past May, Stefanie and I held an event of epic proportions in the history of our business.
With The Locket Project, we had set out to hold an exhibit of our work around the relationships between
mothers and daughters. Our project took a life of its own, and we ended up with over 200 people at our studio /
gallery on the Friday of Mother’s Day weekend. We had the honor and privilege to capture 78 women across 35
portrait sessions and ages ranging from 6 months to 93 years. On that Friday evening, I experienced a joy and
pride of ownership like I had never experienced before. It wasn’t just about the art that we were sharing or the
stories that were being told. It was the reactions of the participants - both during the actual portrait sessions and

on that night - that told me we had made an impact on so
many people. Not to mention we raised over $2000 for
Children’s Cove, an organization that serves as an
advocacy for child victims of physical and sexual abuse.
It was an amazing experience.
6. Are you doing anything differently now than when
you first started in photography? If so, what?
Absolutely. I am much more efficient in my shooting,
in my processing, in my client interactions, and in my
business approach. The more efficient you are, the more
successful you can be.
7. What inspires you? And why?
The people I meet, photograph, and with whom my art
impacts. The other inspiration is the beauty of the places
that I have been fortunate enough to witness and capture
the beauty of through my photography.
8. Interesting fact about you – can be anything, doesn’t
have to be photographically related!
Given that our business was started on the foundation of
capturing the beauty of our travels, a travel-related fact
is in order. I am fortunate to have been to 6 continents, over 50 countries and 49 states. Yes, the 50th state is
Alaska and it’s on the list of “trips of a lifetime” in my future!

Side note from Susan
I looked back at all the previous ‘sidenotes’ I’ve written over the past year and I’ve touched upon these
various topics: ‘better to give than to receive’ thanking the Image Comp mini seminar folks for their
dedication in my first column in January of 2014; That piece was followed by ‘the new person in the
room’, then ‘taking things for granted’, ‘printing out your personal pictures’ and lastly ‘volunteering
and inviting friends’. So, what else can I ‘chat’ about and share with you?
It came to me as I was sorting through the hundreds of photos from the PPAM convention that
Tracy Gilford (and some from Nancy Green) so generously took and shared. I realized that we
photographers not only love to take photographs but we love to be in them as well! If you haven’t seen
them yet be sure and visit the PPAM Facebook page (’like’ the page while you’re at it so you can stay
in the loop regarding upcoming events).
Did you see some of Nancy Green’s photo
selfies? And Tracy too? He photographed himself in
the mirror and also turned his camera around to catch
a ‘selfie’ with friends! They both wanted to make
sure they were documented and remembered –
evidence that they were a part of this convention
experience – you know ‘in the picture’.
So, that got me to thinking…have you made sure that
you’ve been ‘in the picture’ lately with your family
and friends? I know you’re the one who always has
a camera in hand ready to capture and document the
family in a moment’s notice. But are you getting in
the picture too?
During February vacation I had the privilege of
taking care of my two grandsons, 6 & 3. At the end
of the hectic week I made sure I took their
photographs.
My 3 year old grandson complained there weren’t any ‘Superhero’ photos of him like the ones I had of
his older brother. Well, we can’t have that, I thought and made sure we captured and documented some
‘Superhero’ moments for him as well. It was a bit of madness in my small home studio but the boys
had so much fun. Before I put the camera away I had them change their clothes. I set up my remote
trigger. I haven’t had any professional portraits done with my grandsons and more times than not our
photos are quick mobile phone ‘selfies’ or a snapshot done by my daughter. Sometimes I hand her the
camera to make sure I’m documented and that there is proof I was here with them. I want my
grandsons to remember me at this time in their young lives and all the fun we have together.
We giggled and fell over on each other, trying to get ‘posed’ and smiling for the camera. Each boy got

to take turns with the remote, firing so fast I was afraid my camera would burn up. We giggled some
more as they piled on top of me and as they jumped up & down. I’m not sure the little one will
remember this moment but we have it now forever. Instead of just photographs of the two brothers –
their Nana is with them laughing and happy and sharing fun times.
What we do as photographers is so important because we are the visual chroniclers of cherished and
valued memories. We enable people to time travel back to grand events (Linda Pedi upon seeing the
convention photos on the PPAM FB page commented “I just relived the PPAM Convention; thank you
Tracy Gilford for photographing our PPAM memories”), personal milestones and private moments.
We all take this responsibility very seriously but we must not forget ourselves. Get in the picture!
Capture yourself here and now so you and all your loved ones can have you forever in all those
wonderful and special moments. Make sure that while you are capturing the world that you don’t
forget the special place that you occupy within it.

Badges Are Required For All Seminars
Dianne Marshall, VP of Membership would like to remind everyone to please make sure
they bring their membership badges to all seminars and to the convention. Badges must be
worn for entrance into any speaker seminar or workshop and throughout the convention.
PPAM Members, you are encouraged to bring a guest to seminars. But please note that
guests may attend seminars, however this is limited to one time for each guest. A person
may only be a free guest attendee once no matter whose guest they are. After that nonmembers may register for a program at the non-member rate.

Andrea Joliat, M.Photog., CPP in Lexington • “Print Competition in Depth”
Print competition is when you’re ready to take your photography – and your career – to a whole new
level. But, entering your first print into an image competition is no small feat. In this course, Master
Photographer and CPP-certified instructor Andrea Joliat walks you through a detailed analysis of a
merit print. You’ll discuss the twelve elements on which every image is judged, review each element
in detail and see examples from real images. Explore the PPA rules and submission procedures so that
you don’t get sidetracked by unwanted surprises. Finally, you’ll examine why some images succeeded
while others miss their mark. Each attendee can bring up to three prints for critique so you can actually
apply the workshop to your own images!

Andreia Makkas shows you how to create the right environment and setting so that the boudoir shoot is
a fun, relaxing and enjoyable experience for your client.
