PAGE 6 www.mountainecho.co.za 082493 8700 [email protected] MARCH/APRIL 2015 GAS IS DANGEROUS (Gas is safe) It all depends on the who what where why and when Who? First always use a gas installer registered with lpgsa who is knowledgable of all the safety standards and works to those standards What? All equipment for gas use must be approved by lpgsa and be in a good working condition Where? A geyser in a bathroom? Special conditions apply. Cylinders under the eaves of a thatch house? Not allowed Why? In the interests of safety, lives can be lost through incompetence/diy When? Certain items should/must be replaced at a certain age. Regular annual servicing is very important for all open flued appliances (they get their air for combustion from the room they are situated in). A competent gas installer will be familiar with all these requirements The public should also be aware that gas work is divided into different categories. Domestic commercial and industrial. A domestic installer cannot work on a commercial installation, a commercial installer cannot work on an industrial installation. (sabs/sans 10087/1 2013) each level requires a higher level of competence. A commercial installation covers any property that is used as a business, eg coffee shop, hotel, bed and breakfast, restaurant, sports or social club, timeshare, retail outlets etc. Your gas installers registration card will specify the category of work he or she is allowed to work on. Domestic, commercial or industrial. Using the wrong installer will render your insurance policy valueless and could leave you and the installer liable for prosecution should an accident occur that results in injury or loss of life. Dr George Hughes is best known for having been the CEO of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and an internationally acclaimed turtle expert. He is also an author of a book on the sea turtle saga called Between the Tides. What is less known about him is that as a gawky youngster he worked as a cadet ranger at Giants Castle. Those were the days when young rangers were made to graft and rough it, fighting fires, accosting poachers and farmers, charming tourist lasses, capturing wild antelope on horseback and in between, living a hardy life in remote outposts. George will give an illustrated talk (no doubt in his affable, self-effacing and humorous manner) about his early days with “The Parks Board” titled “Drakensberg Ranger” at the Underberg Country Club on Thursday 7th May at 6pm. (Or a few minutes later if the afternoon’s fishing on the Ndawana stream is overly excellent.) His recently published book of the same name will also be on sale. The club will provide its usual menu and bar.
