Registration begins April 1st. When does it start? The first session begins June 15th. What are the age ranges to register for classes? Students need to be going into the 4th grade through 8th grade to register for College for Kids (many of the classes go down to 2nd or 3rd grade). Ages for aquatics programs and sport camps vary. Exact ages/ grade levels can be found in the descriptions throughout this booklet. How much does it cost? College for Kids classes are $60 or $65 per class. Please refer to the descriptions to find the prices for individual sports camps and aquatics programs. What does registration cover? The registration covers all class/camp enrollment fees and supplies. It does not cover the cost of snacks, meals, or other related expenses. How do I register? NOTE: College For Kids will take place on the main campus. Registration prior to June 15th will take place downtown. Beginning June 15th and during College for Kids we will be located at Merced College in ART-2. Will I be sent a confirmation? Confirmations will not be sent unless you register online and provide an email address or send a self-addressed stamped envelope. Refund policy? All College for Kids class registrations are final and no refunds will be awarded unless a class is cancelled by Merced College. There is a $10 per student, per occurrence charge for student schedule changes at any time during the registration period for any reason. College for Kids reserves the right to change a student’s schedule if he/she has been enrolled in a class that is not consistent with appropriate grade level. A parent or guardian is required to be in the water with each student. All children under the age of 2 are required to wear swim diapers. Tiny Tots (Ages 3 – 5) Register NOW! Aquatics Program Students will be introduced to submerging mouth, nose & eyes, assisted breath control & floats, & jumping in unassisted. Students must be able to hold onto the wall by themselves, & be able to attend class without parent present. Advanced Tiny Tots (Ages 4 – 6) Students will practice floats, rollovers, kicking, & arm movement on wall. Students must be able to attend without parent present & must be able to demonstrate all skills required to pass Tiny Tots. Beginners I (Ages 4 – 7) This class focuses on improvement of front & back crawl & rhythmic breathing. Students will practice assisted diving, retrieving objects from bottom of shallow end, glides, & elementary backstroke. Students must have completed a Tiny Tots course or demonstrate all skills required to pass Tiny Tots. Beginners II (Age 8 & Up) This class focuses on improvement of front & back crawl & rhythmic breathing. Students will practice assisted diving, retrieving objects from bottom of shallow end, glides, & elementary backstroke. Students must have completed a Tiny Tots course or demonstrate all skills required to pass Tiny Tots. Advanced Beginners Students will develop confidence & improve on the front & back crawl. They will practice dolphin kicks, breaststroke, open turns, deep water bobs, treading water, & diving unassisted. Students must have completed a Beginners course or demonstrate all skills required to pass Beginners. Intermediate This class focuses on building endurance & better stroke mechanics. Students will practice breaststroke, backstroke, & sidestroke. Flip turns, pike & surface dives, & diving from board are all introduced at this level. Students must have completed the Advanced Beginners course or demonstrate all skills required to pass Advanced Beginners. Diving Dive from side in stride position; feet-first surface dive & swim 3 body lengths underwater; survival float for 1 minute; back float 1 minute; change from vertical to horizontal position. Students must know how to swim and be at least 7 years old.. All swim classes are $55 Class Descriptions $60 Classes Algebra Marvelous Math Animation: Art in Motion I Session 1 T his class is intended for students who have completed the prealgebra course and to prepare students to move ahead to the next course in algebra. The exercises progress from simple to more difficult problems in an effort to give students confidence in their solving ability. Session 3 D o you like to draw? Do you want to make movies? In animation, you can do both! In this class, you’ll learn about the different types of animation and how they can bring your drawings to life in a new way. Sessions 1, 2 & 3 Animation: Art in Motion II H ave you ever wanted to learn more about what goes in to making great animation? Have you taken other animation classes and want to learn more? This is the class for you. Using animation techniques and principles used by professionals, you’ll get to create your own animated short film. Sessions 2 & 3 Archeology for Kids B ecome a resident archeologist and learn basic archeology techniques during this hands-on course. You’ll participate in reconstructing the past by reassembling a broken pot, dissecting an owl pellet, and participating in a small dig. The last few days of class, students will complete the “Big Dig” using real archeology techniques! Sessions 1, 2 & 3; Grades 2nd-8th Around the World T ravel around the world to learn about the people, places, and culture through a variety of fun, hands-on projects. We’ll visit ancient Egypt, China and India in this fun and exciting class. Sessions 1 & 3; Grades 2nd-8th Beginning Sign Language I I n this class you will have fun learning the basics of American Sign Language. Learn how to communicate with others without even saying a word! Students will learn through playing games, signing songs, and telling stories in this fun and interactive class. Session 1; Grades 2nd-8th Beginning Sign Language II I n this class you will have fun building on the skills you’ve learned in the Beginning Sign Language class. Students will continue to develop their skills in American Sign Language, learning through playing games, signing songs, and telling stories in this fun and interactive class. Session 1; Grades 2nd-8th S tudents will learn that math is more than just adding and subtracting. They will gain a deeper understanding of basic skills and concepts through hands-on activities, games, and writing. Students should have a good understanding of the four mathematical operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Microscopes Alive! K ids will venture into another world - the world hidden to us because it is so small! This class is for young scientists who want to see a whole new world through microscopes! Students will view and draw pond life, yeast and much, much more. Sessions 1, 2 & 3; Grades 2nd-8th Planet Explore T he world has amazing diversity and unique ways of life that must be explored! Discover the beautiful cultures of China, Japan, and Korea through songs, games, and special guest speakers. Session 2 Pre-Algebra T his class is specifically designed with the purpose of sequentially introducing, carefully teaching, and methodically reinforcing through drill, the all-important basics of pre-algebra that are definable by rules. The content is arranged and sequentially presented in the order that is most frequently used by most text books. Session 2 Space & Rockets H ow would you like to take a guided tour of the solar system? Through activities such as creating a travel brochure of an object in the solar system, a moon phase model, and a star chart, students will learn all about the solar system. During the second week of class, you’ll design, build, and launch an “eggstronaut” using a 2 liter bottle, an egg, and your imagination! Sessions 1, 2 & 3; Grades 2nd-8th Writing Your Own Adventure Tale S tudents will imagine and create their own 10 - 20 page picture book or comic book. Students will learn basic techniques used in creating an exciting tale. Session 3 Class Descriptions $65 Classes Art of the #Selfie B y studying various art movements, students will try to emulate these styles in their own self-portraits. Students may use face paint/makeup, costumes, and scenery to create the perfect imitation. Absolutely no indecent imagery will be depicted or tolerated in this course. Sessions 2 & 3 All classes are 4 - unless other et your creative juices flowing this summer! The Crafting Divas class is designed to help children express their creative self by learning to make accessories for daily use. What better way to display your art than by wearing it? After participating in this course, students will make 7 projects including a necklace, bracelet, 2 types of earrings, bows, a brooch, and a tutu! Session 3; Grades 3rd-8th Crazy for Cupcakes C upcakes are everywhere! Different flavors, styles, designs, and shapes! Students will learn to decorate an assortment of eye-catching cupcakes using both buttercream icing and fondant. They’ll also learn basic kitchen routines and safe practices. Included in the lessons will be art activities including poster making, apron decorating, and cupcake design. The best part is you can take them home to share with family and friends! Sessions 1 & 2; Grades 2nd-8th Digital Photography for Kids L earn the basics of digital photography with one of the community’s best photographers. You’ll learn the functions of a digital camera, elements of lighting, Photoshop, portrait assignment, and composition. You’ll create a portfolio of prints to take home. NOTE: Students are required to bring their own digital camera to class. We have a limited number of cameras to loan out to students in need. Sessions 1 & 2; Grades 3rd-8th Fusing Glass S tudents will learn the process of melting glass to create different textures and looks and create fun, abstract pieces of art. They will create an abstract fused sun catcher with glass frit and dichroic glass which the instructor will then take to her studio to melt in a kiln. Students will also have the opportunity to make a piece of jewelry such as a fused pendant. Session 3; Grades 2nd-8th Knitting 101 K Register Crafting Divas G nitting is a great activity that allows you to create things both practical and fun such as hats, scarves and toys. This class will teach you how to Finger Knit, make your own knitting needles, how to cast on, knit, purl, cast off and follow a simple pattern. Session 1; Grades 2nd-8th Mosaic Glass L earn what mosaic is by working with shapes first. Students will choose projects based on their creative ability and age. Projects include a place mat, mosaic candle holder, stepping stone, bird house, and picture frame. This class will teach students how to make mosaic art with any materials using found objects to create art. S tudents will write a feature story for the class newspaper after taking a trip to P.S. M’Lynn, A Pet Salon and interviewing the owner to find out how she grooms and provides care for dogs. Students will interview their classroom partners ahead of time to practice. Then they will incorporate photos they took into their story. Session 1 Polymer Clay H NOW! ave your kids learn the basics of polymer clay this summer! It is super fun and easy to create with polymer clay and kids of all ages enjoy working with it. Your children will be able to use their imagination to create 8 different projects which they will be able to use or gift. These projects are a lot of fun and include a pendant, keychain, bookmark, photo holder, and a character, all made out of polymer clay! Session 2; Grades 3rd-8th Ruffles & Rhinestones A re your favorite jeans getting too short? You can recycle them while you learn basic sewing techniques. You will transform the jeans into a ruffled skirt and a T-shirt into a dazzling delight. The ruffled denim skirt and rhinestone accented applique on your T-shirt will be a favorite outfit when school begins. Session 3 Sculpture 101 S culpture is an amazing form of self-expression that allows artists to express themselves in three dimensions. This class will teach students how to sculpt using several different mediums including clay, plaster of Paris, found objects and pipe cleaners to create a variety of fun projects. Session 1 Sewing 101 H ave you ever wanted to make your own clothes, accessories or stuffed animals? This class will teach you how! Learn how to make something that will withstand the test of time by learning the important steps involved in sewing something from beginning to end. Students will learn hand sewing, how to cut patterns and fabric as well as finishing techniques to create something they can take home. Students will complete several fun projects ranging from bags and hats to stuffed animals. Session 1; Grades 2nd-8th Sew What? C reate a magic pillowcase to give your bedroom its own attitude! Select three fabric patterns in a variety of your favorite colors to make a magical pillowcase for a special look on your bed. You will learn basic sewing techniques useful for a lifetime. A second magic pillowcase designed from donated fabric will be presented to a hospitalized child to brighten their day. What a great way to give back to our community! Students will also make soap, lotion and sea salt scrub using natural ingredients.
