LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTS
Every day of the school year, at each school on the Island, our Mercer Island Schools Foundation makes a difference.
That difference is keenly focused on enriching our students’ basic education and making Mercer Island school district the
best in the state. Together, we are providing our children with an investment in their education that will last a lifetime.
When we say “our” Mercer Island Schools Foundation, who do we mean?
• We are families who chose to move here because we wanted our children to attend great public schools.
• We are families who grew up here and moved back because we wanted our kids to experience what we benefited
from: a sense of community and great local schools.
• We are community members who recognize that strong public schools are a vital part of our special Island
community as a whole.

Over the years, thousands of Islanders have donated to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation, knowing
that education is the greatest investment they could provide to our local children. These contributions
have provided students the tools needed to be successful in K-12 and beyond: new textbooks, classroom
equipment, improved curriculum and enrichment activities and, most importantly, highly trained and
exceptional educators who stand by our children each and every day. As we start a new school year, it
is our hope to continue this strong tradition.
Our upcoming fall campaign is focused on raising funds to support academic curriculum and enrichment
in all schools. On November 3rd and 4th, Phone-a-Thon community volunteers will call all households
on the Island with school-age children and ask for a $500 donation per child towards this end.
In recent years, our spring fundraising campaign has raised additional funds for the school district to
“Bridge the Gap” and ensure that class sizes remain as small as possible. On April 28th, we will host
our annual Breakfast of Champions with this same goal. As the state continues to struggle with how to
appropriately fund basic public education, we will continue to look to the future–investing our community
resources to provide exceptional education opportunities for each student.

“I was in ninth grade when we moved to Mercer Island.
Alita Kaier, my teacher at “South,” taught me the power
of words and good writing skills. Milt Yanick and Ruth
Newman taught Humanities Block at the high school,
and their non-traditional approach to teaching the arts,
humanities, and philosophy greatly enhanced my desire to know and experience the world
and other cultures, and to think logically, critically and more deeply. I’m certain these early
developed skills contributed to my success in law school, the courtroom and life.
I’m grateful for the sacrifices my family made to afford to live on Mercer Island so I could
attend Mercer Island Schools. I knew then that it was a unique place, and I realize it today
as I send my daughter to Lakeridge. It’s a safe, dynamic, forward-thinking, and challenging
place to launch learning, and I’m grateful and proud to be a graduate.”

“When my family moved to Seattle a co-worker raved about the Mercer Island
school system being best in the state, in part due to the Mercer Island Schools
Foundation that “Paul Allen dumped a bunch of money into” to supplement
the district’s budget. While it turned out that Mr. Allen indeed did not start the
Foundation, the impact of MISF was and still is extraordinary, empowering and
partnering with a visionary school district that represents
one of the best models of public education. Having
just traveled the world with our five children for a
year, we have a newfound appreciation for the
commitment to education and the dedication
to our children’s potentials on Mercer Island,
with the Foundation playing a cornerstone
role in focusing the community’s
shared values.”

“When my family moved to Mercer Island, I told my parents that someday
I’d move back to California, but that was long before I realized the gift they
had given me. Beautiful trees and parks, low crime, challenging schools with
teachers who genuinely cared, supportive community leaders and people
who knew me everywhere I went... gifts that I soon came to appreciate.
I never dreamed I’d return to raise my own family, but here we are! I was
neither musician nor athlete growing up, but my boys participate in band,
athletics and Scouts, and these experiences are icing on the cake. Today’s
MIHS graduates are well-rounded, possess a greater awareness
of the world around them and are taught to think bigger than
