retrospective
If retro is your look, there are many ranges available for you to set the scene. Taking hints from past pattern and colour
palettes, modern retro uses amazing colour and pattern in a bold and vibrant way. Throw out the design books and
mix and match to your hearts content. Borrow accessories from past eras and jazz them up to create this urban design
theme. It’s a great look for flats, apartments or bachs. Don’t forget that many old pieces of furniture often have solid
frames so all they need is re-upholstering for them to look amazing a second time round.
Design tip Many homes have open plan formats so use colour to separate rooms and sections. Remember to use
a linking colour or theme so each area looks well designed and flows.

The modern white-out can be stunning, interesting, eye-catching and even uplifting. The look is fresh and
clean, but mixing textures is where white gets exciting in interior design. White can be elegant and luxurious
or beachy and relaxed. It can be cosy in winter but have a fresh feel all year round. The balance depends on
how you layer textures and use accessories to prevent too a stark a look.
A white fluffy fur throw over a plain white leather couch will add a cosy feel. Glass and mirrors add bling
to a white room. A Cape Cod beach house look is all about white washed distressed wood and linen-look
comfy couches. Sometimes white is used purely to create a minimalistic and contemporary feel, blinds are
often a good choice for this design look.
Design tip You’ll be surprised at the insulation and sunscreen qualities of blinds – fabric or otherwise.
Ask your Professional Drape retailer which is the most suitable for your needs, and you’ll be able to
achieve the perfect solution for all year round.

Prints
pick and mix
Prints are on the comeback and there are an incredible amount of designs and styles to choose from. Decide on
your colour theme for the room first – there will probably be a print that you like in that colour theme. You may
be a person who likes small prints or you could go for bold and eye-catching designs, the key is that you love the
pattern instantly, There’s no doubt that pattern, large or small, will add interest to the room.
Don’t discount prints as an option too quickly, as you’ll find prints in neutral colours which will tone down the
impact. The latest in jacquards and self embossed fabrics are available in many colour ways, bright and neutral.
Prints can be fun and will help create a room that’s fresh and inviting. Maurice Kain and James Dunlop have many
ranges of beautiful botanically inspired prints while Warwick’s Kristina collection mixes geographical and floral
pattern in a linking colourway.
Design tip Cushions and lamp shades are a great way to link in the wall and upholstery colours with the curtains.
They will give balance and interest to the room.

dreams
Orange is definitely the colour of the season and it’s straight from the fashion catwalk. You don’t have to go neon,
but a bright orange will be incredible in interior design. This stunning colour has been said to energise and inspire.
Use orange print cushions in bedrooms to add spark, and orange candles or towels in the bathroom for an eyecatching feature. Be adventurous and use vivid orange in the lounge – bold print curtains will be stunning in orange
or re-upholster a chair in gorgeous orange velvet.
Orange hues have lasting appeal because they work well in both summer and winter. In cooler months mix orange
with dark browns and rich, warming colours. In summer use orange to declare the new season in all its glory. This
vibrant shade works well outdoors, especially mixed with colours like teal and yellow. A few cushions scattered
on outdoor furniture will make the outdoors bright and inviting. Oriental Trail by Warwick demonstrates how well
different patterns can be used together provided they have a similar colour matching them, whilst James Dunlop
have ranges of stunning gelato colours which are great for matching to other patterns or simply using on their own.

Gatsby
a golden age
All the attraction of bling, glitz, ritz, luxury, opulence and glitter are perfect ways to describe this design theme. It is
indeed high drama and will be the most stunning design addition to your home. Rather than using colour to grab
attention this theme uses mirror, reflection and of course the colours of gold, sliver, pewter and bronze. Velvet and
taffeta are available in many colours and remain very popular choices with durability as an added bonus.
If you don’t want to be too extreme, use these glorious shiny fabrics in accessories like curtain tiebacks,
cushions, ottomans and lamps. Luxury and opulence is the key, making this a perfect look for bedrooms. A glitzy
headboard will draw attention to the top of the room and use lots of complimentary pillows and cushions to
complete the look. Thanks to the entertaining and extravagant nature of this era, it is also perfect for a formal
lounge. Nothing says glamour more than luxurious full curtains with texture and a metallic thread or detailing.
Don’t forget to consider the curtain rods – there are many options available in a metallic paint finish.

Nature
Borrow from nature’s palette and bring the relaxed feeling of the great outdoors inside with the extensive range of
botanical and natural prints and fabrics. Shades of blue and green are naturally grounding so use them in bedrooms
and lounges for a relaxed, calm feel. Alternatively, bright vivid floral and botanical prints are uplifting and refreshing.
Botanical is not just limited to the design of a fabric – more and more it refers to the “green” qualities of a product
or its natural look. For example linen is a strong natural look for lounges. Its textural weave and the irregularity in
the curtain drop, all add to the natural look it creates. Many natural ranges now have a small element of man-made
fibre woven into them to increase durability and help maintain the look for longer.

Childs Play
Kids rooms are where you can have fun in your interior design. There are so many choices for
children’s windows in fabric blinds, sheers or curtains. Fabric or roman blinds add functional
decoration as well as a good way to keep up the insulation qualities in the room. Blackout lining
should definitely be considered in children’s rooms as it is incredibly effective in keeping out light.
You will be glad you chose blackout especially around daylight saving time!
To increase longevity of kids furniture, use a neutral colour and add colour and design in duvets,
cushions and curtains or blinds. Ask your curtain retailer to upholster a toy box, window seat, or
make bean bags to link in with the curtains or duvet. Then as the kids mature you can just change
the soft furnishings to update the room.

AND LIGHT
If you are someone who loves black & white, most likely you will enjoy strong contrast in pattern and
design. Wide stripes and large prints are amazing in strongly contrasting colours, but contemporary
versions include round and textural combinations. Black & white rooms can be injected with colour by
using artworks, cushions or furniture. These will become a real feature in a black & white room.
Design tip You can achieve the contrast this look gives by choosing opposing bright colours like purple
and lime, teal and yellow, orange and pink, chocolate brown and gold or silver and midnight blue. It’s the
unexpectedness that grabs attention and it will work if you choose the correct shades of these colours.

BLUE HUES
A mix of blue and green, the colour teal is making a statement in its own right, and it has many uses depending
on the shade you choose. A bright, vivid shade of teal is summery and adventurous especially when used with
lime, orange and yellow. Most outdoor ranges have a teal colour combination this season. A more muted shade
of teal is often good in a bedroom where you may require more luxury and elegance in the décor.
Design tip Think about the natural light that reflects in a room before you decide on paint or fabric shade.
Lighter paint colours can widen and brighten a room, while darker colours can draw it in for a cosier feel. Use
curtains to contrast with these colours, freshen up the look or add tonal variation.

ACCESSORIES
Ask your Professional Drape Group retailer to make table runners or tablecloths in the perfect colour or fabric
for your room. Get a festive red and gold one made for Christmas or just a plain colour to perfectly compliment
your décor.
Upholstered bedheads are very popular at the moment, plus they are a great way to centre the room and put
the focus on the bed and duvet. A good choice in all types of fabrics, neutral shades of beige, gold, brown,
black allow you to change the duvet without clashing with the bedhead. Cushions made from the range of
fabric you’ve chosen for the curtains gives a co-ordinated look. This is also true in bedrooms – ask your
retailer to make cushions that match the curtains to scatter on the bed.
Experiment with colour – if you love to wear a certain colour chances are you’ll also love the same shade in
your home too.
Give your room an illusion of space by running the curtain rod and curtains from the full height of the room.
Ask your retailer about using bumf or padding to make curtains appear fuller. This tip adds luxury and depth
to your curtains.
Check out the latest fabrics and weaves in “old fashioned” fabrics. Some velvet and linen ranges are now
made with some man made threading so they last longer and give more even colour. You would never know
the difference.
Try motorised or automated blinds and curtains, motorisation is the easiest way to open and close blinds
and curtains with the touch of a button, and are especially good for large or tall blinds or curtains. You’ll be
surprised at how easy it is now to install these – the new technology is surprisingly simple, easy and cost
effective to run.
