Introduction to JayDoc:
The JayDoc Free Clinic exists to provide quality healthcare to the underserved populations of Greater
Kansas City, while creating invaluable opportunities for students at the University of Kansas to enhance
their education in the health professions.
JayDoc Free clinic is a free clinic run by a board of medical students open every Monday and
Wednesday evening at 5PM. Since opening in 2003, KU medical students have helped JayDoc
expand as a primary and urgent care clinic and entry point to the safety net clinics in Kansas
City.

A Typical Night At JayDoc:

5 PM: JayDoc Assistant Directors triage patients in the waiting room while student
volunteers arrive and get organized to see patients.
5:45 – 6:00 PM: First 6 patients are seen by the student physicians (SP’s)
6:00 PM: Physicians Arrive
o After obtaining vitals and a history, students present their cases to physicians
o Physicians can either examine the patient themselves or direct the students
how to proceed to create an assessment and plan for each patient
o Depending on the number of physicians present each night, anywhere from
10 – 20 patients may be seen in one evening
9-11 PM: (flexible) Students and physicians finish seeing patients and creating
paitent notes. Once all notes have been approved by qualified physicians, volunteers
are free to leave for the evening

Who Are Our Volunteers?
On any given night, there are up to 30 individual volunteers at JayDoc Free Clinic. The list
below summarizes the roles many of our volunteers play in the patient care team.
Executive Directors are members of the JayDoc Executive Board responsible for overseeing the
clinic’s operations. One of them will always be present during operating hours; please check in
with them before leaving for the evening. Additionally, there is always an Assistant Director
from the Executive Board available to address any questions or concerns you have.
Student Physicians (SPs) are generally second year medical students, but may also be third and
fourth year students, or medical students taking an MPH year, a post-sophomore fellowship, or
MD/ PhD students in their PhD years. As the second years have generally not had as much
clinical experience, they may need more guidance than the upperclassmen who are in clinical
rotations.
Vitals & Intake (V&I) volunteers are first year medical students who call patients back and
measure their vitals. V&I volunteers initially observe most of the patient encounter conducted
by SPs. As first year students gain more experience learning interview and physical exam skills,
they assume greater responsibilities for conducting patient encounters.
Interpreters are available to help translate for our large Spanish speaking patient population.
These volunteers can be either medical students or volunteers from the community.
Adidtionally, we have many other students and professionals who are incorporated into patient
care teams as appropriate and are great resources for patients. They include:

What Do You Need to Volunteer?

All Physician Volunteers:
o A current Kansas medical license
o Provider Tablet agreement (filled out during your first shift at JayDoc)
Non-KUMC employees
o Please complete a Kansas Charitable Health Provider form and submit a copy
with your current medical license
We welcome physicians regardless of specialty who share JayDoc’s mission of providing care to the
underserved Kansas City community as well as providing a safe and constructive learning experience
for students.

JayDoc pays for all the labs that are run at the clinic. Because of the expense of many lab tests, please
consult with the director before ordering any labs not listed on the JayDoc Free Clinic Lab Requisition

It usually takes a couple of weeks for JayDoc to receive results from labs that have to be sent out. The lab will
then contact the patient to coordinate communication of results.
HIV Testing: We have a grant that allows JayDoc to offer free rapid HIV tests with counseling.
ECG machine is available for use to be read by the ordering physician.
Sonogram and X-ray machines are available for use in conjunction with JayDoc Radiology Night which operates
on an as-needed basis.
Procedures:
Physicians should never feel obligated to perform or supervise a procedure that they do not feel comfortable
performing or supervising. We do have a small procedure room that is utilized for suture removal and small
wound repair. All of the exam rooms should have all the supplies needed to complete a pap smear and female
pelvic exam. Physicians do not have to perform any type of sensitive exam they are not comfortable with.

Specialty Services:
JayDoc Free Clinic hosts several specialty nights on Tuesdays for patients needing services beyond the
scope of our General Clinic. Patients can receive long-term care for Diabetes as well as complete prenatal care and other women’s health services through our Women’s Health Initiative Program. JayDoc
also host monthly clinics for radiology, ophthalmology, and dental care. Patients needing physical and
occupational therapy are easily referred to a partner clinic on KUMC’s campus.

In addition to our organized specialty clinics, JayDoc Free Clinic also operates an Internal Specialty
Referral Program. Follow-up appointments are organized for patients identified as needing specialty
services with a volunteer specialist who comes to clinic to provide a patient consult. This is easier for
some patients who would otherwise be referred to alternate clinics and face enrollment challenges,
longer wait times, and greater financial burden. Additionally, the Internal Specialty Referral Program
provides opportunities for students to see patients multiple times and to establish greater continuity of
care.

Social Services:
JayDoc Free Clinic strives to help patients address the variety of social issues that can affect their health
care outcomes. As JayDoc is best suited for addressing acute health issues, we refer patients to one of
our many partner resources for long term care, prescription assistance, or other health care needs. In
addition to referring patients to our specialty nights and to specialty physicians within JayDoc, the clinic
has partnered with the Wy/Jo Care program to provide our patients access to a variety of necessary
specialty services. Please see the Social Service department for a current list of
specialists available through this program.
In addition to health care issues, we provide referrals to food assistance programs, domestic violence
support systems, parenting classes and child care services, legal services, and a wide variety of other
programs. Our social service department follows up with patients after their visit with us to ensure that
our partner resources are providing the quality of assistance that our patients deserve.

Limited Resources and Services Not Provided:
Due to our limited resources and our patients' limited funds, providing the preferred standard of care is often
difficult. While in some instances patients are able to return to JayDoc for limited follow up care, they will often
wait weeks before they are able to receive follow up care for any chronic illnesses at a medical home. We no
longer provide medication to patients--except in limited instances through our specialty services, which makes it
difficult to provide patients with brand-name medications or costly generic medications. Not every JayDoc patient
is eligible for JayDoc's specialty services. Additionally, we do not prescribe pain medications or treat medical
emergencies. Please be cognizant of these limitations when creating a plan for each patient.
Finally, we are not funded by Medicare or Medicaid.
