SHILLONG, MAY 16: Former
KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum and a youth supporter
launched their "fast unto death"
here, demanding for immediate passage to the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014
to empower the traditional
heads.
However, the "fast unto death"
was later changed to an "indefinite hunger strike" after the district administration refused to
grant permission on ground
that the protest tantamount to
"suicide".
The duo had earlier sought for
permission to hold the protest
at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat.
Nongrum and his supporter,
Goldy Warjri, are holding the
hunger strike under the statue
of a Jaintia freedom fighter U
Kiang Nangbah located at Barik junction here.
Soon after they could start their
protest, magistrates deputed
by the district administration
came and appealed to Non-
grum and Warjri that if they go
ahead with their "fast unto
death", they will have to be arrested under section 309 IPC.
“We cannot allow them to
continue with such protest as
Constitution does not give anybody the right to death or to take
one’s own life. We will have to
arrest if they are unwilling to
withdraw,” a magistrate told
reporters.
Then Nongrum decided to
send a fresh letter for permission to hold an "indefinite hunger strike" and it was accepted
by the district administration.
As a mark of support and solidarity, family members, friends
besides leaders and members including MDCs from the
KHNAM accompanied Nongrum and Warjri during the agitation launched here.
“Fast unto death and indefinite hunger strike is more or
less the same. I decided to
choose this peaceful agitation

NONGPOH, MAY 16: The
Umsning Assembly Youth
Congress today appealed
to the Dorbar ki Rangbah
Shnong Ri-Bhoi district to
postpone the 12-hour
bandh the latter called on
May 19 in the district.
The conglomerate of
headmen recently called
for the bandh to protest
government alleged failure in taking steps to provide relief to the headmen,
whose "powers" were curtailed by a Meghalaya
High Court order.
The headmen also demand for immediate passage to the Village Administration Bill recommended by the KHADC, but government maintains that
the Bill is flawed and has
clauses that violates the
Constitution.
However, the Umsning
Assembly Youth Congress appealed to the
Dorbar ki Rangbah
Shnong to suspend the
bandh in view of the upcoming season of admission in colleges.
Wattson BB Kharkrang,
Umsning Assembly Youth
Congress President has
also said that the "Youth
Congress has nothing to
protest against the bandh,
but its concern is about
students who will be seeking for admission if the
MBSoE declared the
SSLC and HSSLC results," he said.

eration,” Nongrum said here.
The decision was taken after
state government did not pay
any heed to his ten-day deadline that expired on Friday.
The demands put forth by the
former KHADC CEM include
passage to the Village Administration Bill, 2014 and against
an ordinance on powers of traditional heads passed by the
state government which is
seen as an "encroachment"
into the jurisdiction of the district council.
The growing demand for reempowering the traditional institutions and traditional heads
came in the wake of last year’s
Meghalaya High Court ruling
which derecognized their powers.
“I am firm that my protest will
continue till the time the state
government fulfilled all my demands,” Nongrum said asserting that he has taken a personal decision as an MDC representing Jaiaw constituency.

ANVC-B admits anomaly,
will re-verify cadres
GUARDIAN NEWS BUREAU
SHILLONG, MAY 16: Disbanded breakaway faction of
the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) today
decided to go for a ‘re-verification’ of all its cadres after
alleged anomalies in their records.
“Due to anomalies in records of our members, ANVCB agrees to go for re-verification to be held at Tura,
West Garo Hills district,” former chairman of the outfit
Bernard Rimpu Marak said in a statement issued here
on Saturday.
He informed that this was decided in order to speed
up the process and make avail the rehabilitation packages for its members.
Also, informing that appeal has been made in previous meetings for support and assistance in order to
facilitate smooth completion of re-verification, Marak
however said, “Government is yet to communicate on
this matter.”
According to him, without support and assistance
many may not be able to make it for re-verification as
cadres have returned home and anxiously waiting for
the package without any source of income.
“If support is not provided than cadres coming from
near and far will have to bear their own expenses which
may not be practical,” he said.
Claiming that leaders of the organization are taking
utmost care to bring about all cadres, Marak however
said, “But if some are unable to make it due to lack of
support, leaders should not be blamed.”
SHILLONG, MAY 16: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council –
Mawlong Unit (HYC-MC) today
protested the alleged attempt to
mine uranium in a ‘community
land’ of a three villages falling
under East Khasi Hills district.
The drilling of uranium as alleged by the HYC has been taken
place at a 2-3 acre of community
land in Ri Laiseng Area under
Mawlong Sidarship. The community land belongs to three villages – Nongkroh, Tyrna and Mustoh.
The decision to oppose the
move came after the HYC-MU
found that the permission granted to the Director of Head Mission – II Geological Survey of India, North Eastern Region was for
the purpose of evaluation of limestone in Ichamati – Ri Laiseng
Area.
“The permission granted by the
Dorbar Laiseng Sohsarat was for
evaluation of limestone. But contrary to this, in an inspection conducted by the HYC recently, it was
found that the same permission
was used for drilling of Uranium
in the land,” HYC – MU president
Rangdajied Khain told newsmen
here on Saturday.
On March 15 last year, secretary
of the Dorbar Laiseng Sohsarat,
LS Majaw had written a letter
granting permission to the Director of Head Mission – II GSI, NER
which states – “It gives us a great
pleasure to know that the GSI
conducting an evaluation of limestone in Ichamati – Ri Laiseng

useful data to all concerned.”

'Take advantage of winds of change'
SHANGHAI, MAY 16: Reaching out
to Chinese investors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked
them to take advantage of the
"winds of change" in India with a
much more transparent, responsive and stable regulatory regime
even as leading firms from the two
sides signed deals worth USD 22
billion.
"This is a historic opportunity for
Chinese companies," Modi said

CEOs of top Chinese companies,
including Alibaba Group chairman Jack Ma.
"We have committed ourselves
for creating and improving the

be in India, we are confident to
make you more and more comfortable," the Prime Minister said.
"India is ready for business. You
must be sensing the winds of
change in India. I only advise you
to come and feel the same," he
told business leaders from both
countries. The Prime Minister
said as two major economies in
Asia, "harmonious partnership"
between India and China was
essential for economic development and "political stability" of the
continent. "You are the 'factory of
the world'. Whereas, we are the
'Back office of the world'. You give
thrust on production of hardware,
while India focusses on software
and services," he said.
Earlier, he met CEOs of 22 top
Chinese companies including
Alibaba, China Light and Power,
Xiaomi, Huawei and Trina Solar
on the last leg of his three-day visit
to China.
Assuring Chinese business
leaders that India's economic
environment has changed, Modi
said: "Our regulatory regime is
much more transparent, responsive and stable. We are taking a
long-term and futuristic view on
the issues. Lot of efforts have
been made and are still underway to improve the ease of doing
business."

key to success of every developmental programme”, he said.
“South Garo Hills is the number

available here,” he added.
He urged upon the line departments to ensure that plantation
