2014 FALL SALE REPORT
Cold, wet and dreary weather didn’t inhibit the interest in the renewed MSBA Fall Sale held on November 8 at the
Singletree Sale Facility in Charlotte. Breeders consigned 39 lots of open and bred females, eight show steer prospects and
one embryo transfer flush. The sale was not exclusively Shorthorn genetics and drew a standing room only crowd. The
facility and location was outstanding and the Singletree hosts – Kris, Evan & Grace Boehmer – were very hospitable and
accommodating. Consignors, the MSBA Board and the Sale Committee were satisfied with the outcome and this sale is
certainly in the plans for Fall 2015!
Lot 20, a bred female from Narrow Brook Shorthorns, sired by NBS Low Rider 42W topped the sale at $4,500. A $3,300
bred female consigned by Little Cedar Cattle Co. was second high seller, She is a Montana Ruby sired by a Byland Turbo
son who is safe to the Reserve National Champion Bull, Little Cedar Cabrera 24. The top selling open heifer, at $3,500,
was a composite Charolais consigned by Mains-Boehmer Angus of Burlington. Lot 11, consigned by Cool Cattle Co., was
a purebred Shorthorn Salute x Augusta Pride that sold for $2,600. Six show steer prospects averaged $1,470 with the top
steer at $1,700 consigned by Fred and Katie Frey, of Wauseon, Ohio. The overall sale average was $2,200. Thank you to the
Sale Committee, the Singletree crew and sale crew, and of course the consignors and buyers.
NEWS FROM THE SHORTHORN LASSIES
Breed ambassadors, women’s auxiliary and Shorthorn royalty are all phrases that can be used to describe a Shorthorn
Lassie. The Michigan Shorthorn Lassie Association is proud to represent Michigan’s Shorthorn breeders while promoting
the red, white and roans and supporting our youth members.
The Michigan Lassie Association will be hold a meeting immediately following Michigan Shorthorn Breeders meeting on
February 15th. We will be collecting dues, electing officers, and planning what we will do to support Michigan Shorthorn
junior members in 2015. Please plan on attending the meeting and getting involved this year!
The Lassies would like to congratulate Sydney Miller for finishing up her reign in November as National Alternate Shorthorn
Lassie Queen. Sydney did a great job of representing the Shorthorn breed and the state of Michigan.
Michigan Shorthorn Lassie Queen Andrea Urbach and Princess MacKenna Gesseman are available to attend events to help
promote beef and and our breed. Please contact Queen Chair Sydney Miller at: [email protected] or 517-7491931 to suggest an event or activity in your area. - Report submitted by Christine Heverly

Hello again! I hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays before getting deep into calving season. Over the winter, MJSA has
been hard at work preparing for the upcoming year with many changes in store. In early December, we elected new officers
and updated our bylaws. We have been planning new fundraising projects and for our state show and Junior National. The
juniors are looking forward to this new year and extend many well wishes to you all. We look forward to seeing everyone
at the MSBA annual meeting - youth and parents are always welcome, please put Sunday, Feb. 15 on your calendar!
Michigan Junior Shorthorn Association has been an active and productive state youth group for many years. MJSA helps
create opportunities for younger breeders to learn and be successful with projects, and grow into older breeders. MJSA is
a fun group that helps youth build friendships with people who like to do the same things they do!
MJSA holds its State Show and Contests in mid-June during the Michigan Beef Showcase in June at MSU. They put final
plans together for the national show and contests during this weekend. This year the National Junior Show is June 20-25
in Grand Island, Nebraska. Michigan juniors are always competitive in national contests because our adult advisors help
kids plan and prepare through the spring and early summer. Work sessions for the Junior National will be announced soon.
- Report submitted by Sydney Miller

It is time to be thinking about the Michigan Beef Expo and your consignment (s) which
will be part of an offering that will be the envy of all the other breeds and an
outstanding representation of MSBA. Consignors have set the bar high in past sales and
this year should be no different. Quality is rewarded and has been proven time and time
again so keep that in mind when filling out your consignment forms. Remember, if it
doesn’t hurt a little bit to sell your stock, we’d challenge you to dig deeper. We are
looking for bulls, bred heifers, open heifers, cow calf pairs, embryos, semen, flush
opportunities of both purebred Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle.
I will be working with Matt to coordinate this year’s sale. Please send $100.00/head or
lot, payable to M ichigan Shorthorn Breeders Association, along with the
completed forms, comments and a copy of the registration paper. Send high quality
pictures of the specific animal or their dam or sire to the Sale Managers by the entry
deadline: January 25, 2015. You can also e-mail your comments and photos.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give either of us a call!
Thank you,
Matt and Justin
