INTERNED: The curator’s perspective
Wednesday 3 June 2015
5.30 - 6.30pm
Exhibition Interned: Torrens Island 1914-1915
on at the Migration Museum until 16 August 2015
In August 1914 war broke out across Europe. Within
months hundreds of men – ‘enemy aliens’ – were interned
on Torrens Island.
How did the war change South Australian society?
How was propaganda used to influence the civilian population?
How were Germans and people of German descent treated
during the war? Why?
Students learn about the history of Germans in South
Australia and investigate how World War1 affected
Germans and people of German descent.
This teacher professional development program will be
an address by Mandy Paul, Senior Curator, Exhibitions,
Collections and Research who is also the Curator of the
exhibition Interned: Torrens Island 1914-1915. Mandy
will give you her insights into putting the exhibition
together, what she chose to include, what she chose to
leave out and why. The links to the Australian Curriculum
will be made explicit and also ideas for incorporation into
your curriculum plan.
