Review our Registration Guide - Mini University @ Brandon University

INDEX & DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
M ISSION S TATEMENT
Mini University aims to shape the lives of children and youth
through a variety of social, recreational, and educational
activities and experiences of the highest quality.
By offering a safe, accessible and caring learning environment,
Mini University strives to foster social and skill development,
respect for cultural diversity, increased self-esteem and the
development of leadership skills in both staff and participants.
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Brandon University’s Mini University has
accomplished a lot in our 31 years of
hands-on summer camp programming
for children and youth ages 5 to 15. We
have grown from only 200 participants
per year to over 1,000, and from four
weeks of camp to nine weeks. An amazing 17,000+ campers
have attended Mini U since its inception.
As a cost recovery, not-for-profit program, Mini U would not
be where it is today without the generous financial support
from our provincial, federal and private funders, as well as
local businesses and advertisers. Said funding has helped
sponsor more than 2000 Aboriginal, Metis and low-income
youth from all over Manitoba to attend camp, many of whom
have been inspired to complete their high school education and
go on to post-secondary studies.
Our success has also depended on the creativity, passion, and
enthusiasm of the more than 700 post-secondary instructors
and staff who found meaningful summer employment and
training with Mini U. In addition, the support of Brandon
University’s faculty and staff in providing space, equipment
and expertise has helped us to provide our quality programming.
Of all Mini U’s accomplishments, I am most proud of both the
sheer number of choices we offer in our unique multi-disciplinary
camp program, and our hands-on, interactive content.
It has been a pleasure to have shaped the direction of this valuable
program, and to continue to shape Mini U’s future. I believe that
this is a truly worthwhile experience for children and youth, and
I welcome all of our new and returning participants.

CHOOSE YOUR COURSES
Our flexible and unique Senior Mini U program (July
6 - 31) allows students ages 9-15 to customize their
camp experience by choosing four different courses
to take during a week at Mini U.
Senior Mini U courses are organized into four slots:
two long slots (about 105 minutes each) and two short
slots (about 60 minutes each), with one slot of each
length in both the morning and afternoon.
1. Refer to pages 5-10 for detailed course descriptions.
2. Use either our online registration system (saves
time!) or the paper registration form on pages 18-21.
3. Pick your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for all four
slots, in case your 1st choice is full.
4. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
5. In the event that a course is full or cancelled,
students will be moved into their next choice.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
OUR INSTRUCTORS
Our instructors are chosen for their knowledge,
maturity, leadership and ability to relate to children.
The vast majority of our staff are university students or
recent graduates, and many are studying to become
teachers in the Faculty of Education.
To ensure that we employ only the highest quality
staff and instructors, we provide three weeks of paid
training that includes everything from lesson planning to
epi-pen use. As well, all staff are certified in CPR and
First Aid and have clear background checks.
BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY
Above all, Mini U’s goal is for its participants to have
fun in a safe learning environment. To ensure that
everyone has fun, we do three main things.
1) Explain Our Rules: Classroom rules and our
expectations are clearly defined at the start of camp.
Participants are made aware that behaviours which
cause emotional or physical harm, disrupt the camp,
or damage facilities or equipment are not tolerated.
Also, participants are informed that Mini U does not
tolerate such behaviours as bullying, racism, sexism,
and homophobia.
2) Train Our Instructors: As part of staff orientation,
we train our staff in classroom management and
behavioural management techniques.
3) Enforce Three Strike Policy: If an issue is
unable to be resolved by the classroom instructor
then the participant is brought to the Program
Assistant for a discussion. The Program Assistant
assesses the situation and may issue a STRIKE ONE.
The participant is informed why they have been
given a strike and what they can do to prevent further
strikes.
If the participant continues to act in a way that is
against our rules and policies, then STRIKE TWO is
given and parents/guardians/chaperones are contacted.
In the rare situation when STRIKE THREE is needed,
the participant is immediately removed from camp
and released to their parents/guardians/chaperones.
Please note that refunds are NOT given in this event.
Based on the seriousness, and at the discretion of
Mini U’s Director and Program Assistant, some
behaviours (such as fighting) may immediately warrant
a second or even third strike without previous strikes
being issued.
