TECHNICAL INFORMATION ‘GREEN SCREEN’ The Mobilane® ‘Green Screen’ is a living fence, consisting of a metal grid covered with plants. The metal grid is folded at the bottom to facilitate a biodegradable pot, which is filled with potting soil. The plants are grown in this soil and trailed along the metal grid in order to get full coverage. The biodegradable pot consists of coconut fibres bond together by natural latex. Once the ‘Green Screen’ is installed this pot will degrade within one or two years, depending on structure, nutrient levels and moisture levels of the sub soil. Two types of ‘Green Screen’ are available, in different sizes with various types of plants. The table below shows the technical features of each type. In between each consecutive panel a post needs to be installed. Although the panels are 120cm long, space needs to be allowed for the post and brackets. Hence the distance between two posts (outside-outside) needs to be 130cm. Metal, green coated ø48 x 1750mm Plant types Posts Brackets Fastening Height is after installation Carpinus betulus Fagus sylvatica Pyracanta All posts are galvanized before being green coated Not applicable After every third consecutive panel a post needs to be installed. Posts are linked by a horizontal tension wire (ø2½-3mm), which runs along the top of the posts. Panels are hereto attached with small metal wires. 1 INSTALLATION ‘GREEN SCREEN’ Planting period The ‘Green Screen’ can be planted all year round, except during frosty spells as it is not possible to dig the required trench. Improvement of sub soil structure In nearly all cases improvement of sub soil structure and quality is required prior to planting ‘Green Screens’. Type of improvement necessary depends greatly on local circumstances and previous use of the soil. Posts – panel size 1200x1800 mm With regards to wind load pressure, posts used for installing 1200x1800 mm panels need to be embedded in concrete, 10 liter per post. Fertilisers Upon installation fertilisers need to be applied on top of the biodegradable pot as both the rooting process in the sub soil and the degrading process of the pot require a lot of energy. Various types of slow release fertilisers are available in the market. Watering During the first season, watering is vital, especially during hot and dry spells in spring and summer. However, swampy conditions must be avoided at all times, as this will prevent root development. In ‘wet locations’ a drainage pipe could be used to remove excess water. Recommendation It is recommended to have the ‘Green Screen’ installed by expert companies specialised in gardening / landscaping. They will have the know-how regarding soil structure, fertilisers and local circumstances. MAINTENANCE ‘GREEN SCREEN’ Pruning In the year of planting, pruning is not advisable. Thereafter pruning should be carried out once or twice a year in order to keep a compact hedge. Best months for pruning are April / May and September / October. Fertilisers An annual feeding with slow release fertilisers in spring is recommended. Type to be used depends on soil type and nutrient levels of the soil. Additional feedings might be required with soils showing deficiencies, which could be indicated by a soil-testing laboratory. Pests and diseases Symptoms of presence of a pest or disease should be diagnoses by an expert. He/she can determine the type of organism involved and judge the need for a treatment. As the ‘Green Screen’ is a nesting place for bird life, chemical applications should be avoided as much as possible 2 GENERAL FEATURES ‘GREEN SCREEN’ The following features / characteristics are applicable for the ‘Green Screen’: • Living fence due to use of fully-grown plants • Direct privacy upon installation • All year privacy possible due to use of evergreen Hedera (Ivy) • Easy application for turn-key projects • Security improvement of premises due to use of metal panel • Security is experienced in a comfortable way duo to the covering by green plants compared to a plane metal fence or brick wall. • Low maintenance costs as pruning can be done mechanically and gapping up figures are very low due to the use of a biodegradable pot with fully-grown root system. The above list of features facilitates the following possibilities for the use of the ‘Green Screen’: • Private properties, housing estates and industrial areas. • Golf courts, cemeteries and parking places. • Road verges, playgrounds and schoolyards. • Balconies and (roof) terraces as tailor made hardwood plant troughs are available. • Tool for local authorities for marking boundary lines between private property and property owned by the municipal. • Potential use as firewall, as an Ivy does not burn (plants like conifers do). • Easy covering up off graffiti walls.
