President’s Message
As we now enter the hottest time of the year, let me once again remind
everyone to hydrate, apply sunblock, and watch out for snakes and bees.
The summer season also means we have to start planning for next year.
This is the time when we need to prepare for the annual turnover of board
members. Every year about half of the positions become available. This
year we have six of the eleven opening up. As I mentioned to those of you
at the luncheon, none of these positions works in a vacuum. Dozens of
members all year long assist in supporting the club. Many are snowbirds
and not available year round, but who do a tremendous job of assisting
board members through our peak season.
We have a Nominating committee comprised of Tim Benjamin, Dick Clark
and John McKinney. The positions we seek to replace next year are as
follows: President, Rules, Special Events, Treasurer, Sponsorship and
Handicap (Harry Clausen has agreed to take on this role). For those of you
not at the luncheon, I will simply sum up my address to the membership this
way: If no one is willing to step up next year, we simply don’t have the
people necessary to continue. This is not an option any of us desires,
especially in the key role of Special Events. As I mentioned Thursday,
without a SE chair, we simply won’t be able to have special events. So,
when a member of the nominating committee approaches you, I hope you
will be open to taking on one of these two-year roles. Board members
currently occupying the positions will be available to discuss the time and
responsibilities of each position with those would consider running,
There is also one other role I’d like you consider: The person who puts
together this newsletter you are reading. Tim Koch has been doing the
newsletter for nearly four years and I would love to have someone take on
this role as well. This would be a perfect position for a snowbird because it’s
all done online.
After four years on the board, I can tell you that I’ve had a great time with
all of you and I hope that you will give it a try. I’ve loved it.

Member-Member Medal Play
Tournament
[no photo of Champions available]
Member-Member Stroke Play: Congratulations to Frank McHugh
& Steve Bender, Overall Champions (115). Forty teams competed
in this two-day stroke play partner tournament. Other flight winners
included: Tony Van Natter & Tim Ward (118); Mark Hojnacki &
Tom Fitzgerald (123); Larry McNamee & Tom Blong (117); David
Cohen & Otto Voorman (124).
Weather was outstanding and the scores were low! Guys came to
lunch with big appetites...we even had to order more fried chicken.
Larry McNamee had his tee shot go in the hole and then pop out just
18 inches away from winning a Golf Cars of Arizona new golf cart on
Hole #4 at The Preserve.
A special thanks to all our volunteers, the maintenance crews at SBR
and TP, Mike Jahakse & Ken Steinke, the pro shop staff and our
always capable HOA2 banquet staff. This was a good turnout with a
third more teams participating than when staged in mid-August with
our typical monsoon weather and iffy course conditions. Thanks to
everyone for playing!
Upcoming Special Events....
Individual Member Match Play [July 2 through mid-October)
Please note the change in start date, due to moving our Summer Bash
up to June 4.
Phil Gray and Pres. Dennis Marchand in
serious discussion. Vacation plans.
Rennie and a love note left by a snow bird.
July 2nd is our Kick-Off for this event, but if you are not here then your
match can simply be rescheduled. The brackets should be out around
June 25. We will run this throughout the summer and early fall on a
very flexible schedule so even if you are just here for one-third of the
time, you can still get your matches in before mid-October.
Remember, with MV scheduled to re-open on September 21st with
new greens, we are expecting to have at least one course open to
play throughout September and October.
You can play your matches on a Thursday or any other day of the
week. Once you know who your opponent is as you work your way
through the bracket, you can go ahead and schedule your next match.
All the information will be on the MPMGA website to help you set up
your matches, report your results and follow how the brackets play out
right through the playoffs among flight winners. There will also be a
consolation bracket so everyone gets at least two matches, unless

you have a BYE in the first round. Details will be on the website by the
end of May. Again, all our full-time members should play in this fun
event that should easily fit around your summer travel schedule.
Bob Eder invokes the weather gods; it worked
Ryder Cup: Sept 2 (Wed at SB) and Sept 3 (Thur at TP) with
lunch afterwards at TP
Please note that the play dates have been pushed back one week at
the request of SMGA. This is a “gross” only match play format
between 16-player teams from both SMGA & MPMGA. Each side
invites its lower handicap members to compete in this annual event.
Invitations to play will go out in August.
Club Championship: Nov 11 (Wed at TP) and Nov 12 (Thur at MV)
with lunch to follow
Javelina Cup: Dec 7 (Mon at SB) and Dec 10 (Thur at TP)
2016 Member-Guest Desert Classic: April 13-16

Men’s Club Luncheon’s Refresher
Please remember to sign up for the monthly meeting lunches by the
deadline which is the Sunday before the Thursday meeting
If you sign up to golf and then need to drop out, please remember to
cancel your lunch online or by emailing Bob Maruniak
If you sign up for lunch, don’t cancel, and don’t show up: your still owe for
the cost of a lunch as we contract in advance based on the number of
signups. Occasionally, we may be able to have someone take your place
and pay for lunch when they show up and hadn’t signed up.
Come and get me, boys!!
If you show up for lunch without having signed up, there is no guarantee
you will be able to eat.

Weekly Tournament Events
In the past few months, we have had experiments and discussion about
tee choices. Here is what has happened.
Tim Ward gives it his best body English
First, we tried experiments with Gold/Platinum players moving hole #7
at the Preserve forward, with or without moving hole #16 back. After
polling all the affected people, the Board decided to leave things alone. We
are NOT changing hole #7, so it remains a Gold tee for the Gold/Platinum
guys. The actual vote was very even, and we decided that was not enough
consensus to change.
This past month, we have had a dialogue with those who play the Gold
tees. The proposal was whether to do away with Gold tees in order to
eliminate a perception that those who move up to Gold/Platinum have a
competitive edge. Most who play Gold want to continue to do so. Many
proposed instead that we do away with the Gold/Platinum option. But that
won’t happen, because it is the option chosen by more club members than
any other.

Others suggested that we flight players by tee, so that those playing
Gold don’t have to compete against those choosing Gold/Platinum. We do
that in our special events, allowing people to choose knowing that they will
play only others making the same tee choice. But we have had a
philosophy for years regarding regular Thursday play that says (1) let
people play with anyone else in the club that they wish, and (2) let people
play whatever tees they wish. It’s a very inclusive, and perhaps more
social philosophy. The special events approach is intentionally (and the
Board believes, more appropriately) competitive. But we need not be the
same way every week. As a result, we believe the philosophy noted for
weekly events is appropriate for those events. Hence, we have again
decided to make no change. You can still choose your partners in team
events, and you can still choose the tees that you prefer. (We have some
formats, like scramble or Chapman, where we require teammates to use
the same tees for fairness reasons.) If you think that a tee choice gives a
competitive edge, you are free to change your own tee preference. You
can always still choose whatever tees you want for special events. And, of
course, you can change your weekly preference, if you change your mind.
Other than that, we continue to have lots of interesting formats for our
weekly games. I hope you are intrigued and try some of them out. See you
on the course!
Golf Group Playing Opportunity
A small group of men who play on Mondays and
Fridays is looking for additional players with indices
between 14 and 33 to fill openings created for
various reasons. They play both team and individual
formats with modest wagers. “Relatively noncompetitive.” Have been known to enjoy a draft
after golf.

Membership
I am retiring as newsletter editor in 6 months.
While that may not seem important now,
finding a replacement and having some time
for training requires a bit of lead time. The
Board members provide the ‘articles’/reports,
and Bill George most often provides a
plethora of excellent photos from which to
choose. Keeping a template from month to
month simplifies the process.
Prior publishing experience is NOT a
prerequisite; a couple of hours at the
beginning of each month usually does the job.
A ‘part-time’/snowbird member can easily
manage the job.

SPONSORSHIP
Our goal is to maintain 95% our current sponsors in addition to adding new sponsors. Doing
that means contacting new businesses and encouraging them to become one of our
sponsors.
You can help by suggesting new sponsors. Contact Ron Victor. The Committee will make
the contact and do our best to increase our sponsor base.
