Types of Variables Variable – Any factor that can change in an experiment 1. Independent Variable The factor that is intentionally changed by the investigator There can be only one in an experiment 2. Dependent Variable The factors that will change as a result of the independent variable The factors that you measure or observe as data There can be one or more dependent variables 3. Controlled Variables (constants) The factors that are kept the same in an experiment to allow for a fair test. There are many controlled variables in an experiment Dependent variable Ex. Does changing the temperature of a ball affect the height the ball will bounce? Independent variable Controlled Variables: Soccer ball Air pressure of ball Height of drop Surface soccer ball lands on Force used to release ball
