[View map here] SESSION Great Siege BRIEF: Road Classroom discipline and student misbehaviour have been the focus of several international studies. Among the most frequent and most troublesome misbehaviours which cause great concerns to teachers are talking out of turn (including chattering), hindering other students from learning, student idleness and non-attentiveness. Studies indicate that effective disciplinary strategies are indispensable in the teaching and learning process as they influence student responsibility, student misbehaviour, teacher stress and the teacher-student relationship. The presentation, based on a local case study, intends to: [1] highlight the more and less effective classroom disciplinary strategies; [2] give a clearer picture about the disciplinary strategies resorted to more often in the classroom; [3] explore why teachers resort to particular disciplinary measures; [4] recommend strategies necessary for creating a positive learning atmosphere. PRESENTER: Chris Kenely started his professional career as a teacher in 1996, after reading for a Bachelor Degree in Education at the University of Malta. He spent 17 years teaching in a church school, occupying different posts of responsibility, including four years as a member of the school’s leadership team. During this time he furthered his studies on Education Leadership with the University of Leicester, focusing his research on classroom discipline. Consequently he joined the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education and holds the role of education officer within the Quality Assurance Department.
