And, on July 5th, 2015, there will be Dominican flags waving all over the park, as we celebrate the 5th annual Dominican Festival, with a crowd between 15,000 and 25,000 people! Former Olympic Boxing Champion, Sandy Mambo, is now taking on a whole new challenge, this time, using his vocal talents to perform in a band. This summer, as part of the “Festival Dominicain de Montreal”, Sandy and his Latin band will perform a duo with Audrey Grenier, composer and performer. Mostly known as a local TV and radio personality, Audrey unleashed her vocal talents on TVA’s “La Voix”, when she competed for a spot on their TV show – known as “The Voice” in the USA. The Sandy and Audrey duo perform songs in both French and Spanish, with their live band. Every year, the festival attracts Montrealers from all ethnicities, waving the Dominican flag in support of the Latin American country’s celebration. “When I see people in the audience that are clearly not from Latin-America but still wave both the Dominican and Canadian flags while we perform www.mtltimes.ca Photo: Bob Lévesque music on stage, it fills my heart with gratitude and warmth. This year’s event promises to be colorful and fun for people of all ages, as there will be installations for kids, food kiosks with catering from various Latin countries and performances of merengue and bachata from day to night. For those who have travelled to Dominican Republic, you must be familiar with the rhythms of their music and sensuality of their dances. When they got a little older, I worked as a small business branding facilitator, as Here’s how it all happened: I had relocated in Toronto. ACT 1: HOW MOM GOT www.mtltimes.ca 13 WEDNESDAY WEDNESDAY June 3, 2015 PROFILE Then I wrote my first 'woman power' play, Containers. It was selected for the Women's Work New Play Festival in St. John's. I love to empower women. I love to empower girls. All my creativity revolves around that. I was determined to return to acting and play strong, powerful women. But coming back to acting in mid life was like running head first into a brick wall. Casting directors wouldn't even meet me. I kept making commercials. Instead of giving up, I wrote this one-woman show, Life as a Pomegranate. It is about a woman who gives up her dreams to help her family and how she has to do something desperate to get back on track. The show acts as a two sided coin: it inspires those who are finally following their passions and by playing nine characters, I get to showcase what I do as a performer. ACT 2: NO MONEY? NO PROBLEM! I had no idea how to get funding for Life as a Pomegranate. I'm nobody famous, but I dreamed of opening at a huge venue, with hundreds of audience. No funding showed up. Someone suggested I ask my bank branch for funds. I made an appointment with the same bank branch that deals with my mortgage. I showed the bank manager my portfolio. He suggested a bake sale to raise funding for my show. A friend was waiting in a nearby cafe. We had planned to celebrate my success. Instead of bringing good news, I showed up with a rash on my neck. My friend told me to think of something new to get funds. I was about to give up. Coming up with a ridiculous solution is sometimes the best option. When you're determined, the ideas that present themselves come from a deep place. "Let's go door to door and ask the shop owners if we can produce the show in their store," I suggested. The first store we came to was a mattress store. Manager Paul Branch of Essentia Mattresses, said 'yes'. ACT 3: MIRACLE IN A MATTRESS STORE Rented 10 chairs, sound system, poster on the sidewalk...after 2 months working with director Ginette Mohr, the show was ready. In my mind, I was opening to a crowd. I truly decided to act as if there was an audience of 5000. All 5 people who showed up gave me a standing ovation. The next weekend, 20, then we rented 40 chairs and the mattress store was sold out. A young Broadway actor was visiting his Canadian parents for the weekend. He asked his friends what was happening on stages and they told him nothing, except there was a crazy woman doing a 14 unique show in a mattress store and it was pretty good. When he returned to NYC, he heard 2 of his producers complaining that they needed a cheap to produce, 60-minute show to fill in the slot that had fallen through. He told them about Life as a Pomegranate. Alan Baxter phoned, asked for the script, I performed the show for them the next month, and then they booked me. Life as a Pomegranate opened October 2012 at the Producer's Club, Off Off Broadway. ACT 4: SUCCESS AND MORE SUCCESS The show was then produced at the 2013 Mid Town International Theater Festival (Mid Winter Madness Division). We were nominated for Best Overall Production, Best Director (Ginette Mohr), Best Production Values and Outstanding Actress. We won Outstanding Actress. Later on, my 2nd play, The Hush Baby, won the People's Choice Award at Stratford's Spring Works Festival 2013. These are just the beginning of the string of successes that have landed in my lap, after I’ve decided to make my own dreams happen. Quite impressive you say? Spending an afternoon talking to her was like a breath of fresh air, the kind of moment that brings light to your day, and hope that your own dreams can become goals and a reality. Dawna had some parting thoughts to share with us, for specific people reading this story: TO WAYLAID DREAMERS: There are three kinds of people: in the parade, watching the parade and those who have no idea where the parade is. Make your own parade, even if the wheels on your float seem weak. Make your own life happen. The world needs you to be the best version of yourself. If you've taken time away from your dreams, don't be afraid to go back, even if you have to start at the beginning. Jump in. Your talent is still there. What it takes to thrive in today's creativity milieu is focus, networking and hard work. Just completed, a new children's fantasy novel, A Yarn of Bone and Paper. It is the story of a lonely girl who slowly realizes the people raising her are not human. A publishing house is reading the manuscript right now, and, once published, Dawna plans on writing a screenplay adaptation. Another solo show has been written, Backs to Goofy. Her new play, Yellow Birds, a Montreal post WW2 love story, is in development. New short, KID GLOVES, is in pre- production. The Auberge offers accommodation designed for couples who enjoy a private, intimate and adventurous experience.
