ASW 2010 ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST
―My Friend with Autism”
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Autism Society of
Wisconsin (ASW), with support from the Department of Public
Instruction (DPI), is sponsoring its 5th Annual Autism Awareness
Essay Contest. Information will be sent to every Public and Private
School Building Principal in Wisconsin. Winners will be honored at
the ASW Conference on Saturday, March 20th, at the Hotel Sierra/KI
Convention Center in Green Bay.

Dear ASW Members,
I would like to provide you with (1) a brief update on the Autism Insurance legislation, and (2) a heads up on a very important
upcoming Annual 2010 ASW conference on March 18-20 at the Hotel Sierra (formerly the Regency Suites) in Green Bay.
Autism Insurance Legislation
The autism mandate, contained in the state budget, is effective for newly issued policies on or after November 1, 2009. For existing
policies the law is effective upon the renewal date of the policies on or after November 1, 2009. (This means if a policy just
renewed Sept 1 2009 the law would not be effective until the policy renewed Sept 1, 2010.)
For plans or policies tied to a collective bargaining agreement, it first applies to the renewal date on or after November 1, 2009.The
law applies to disability insurance policies, excluding limited services or specific/single disease policies (i.e., dental only, vision
only), long-term care and Medicare supplement policies. The law also applies to self-funded governmental policies (i.e. state,
county, city, town, village, or school district) plans but would not apply to a non-governmental self-funded plan (i.e., ABC company
self-funded plan). This applies to both individual and group health insurance plans. If you are uncertain whether your employer
sponsored health insurance is insured or self-funded you should ask your human resource department or call your insurer.
Insurers or self-funded governmental plans shall provide coverage for the primary diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders for a
minimum of $50,000 per year for intensive evidence-based behavioral services or $25,000 for non intensive evidence-based
services. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance promulgated emergency rules implementing and interpreting this law that
are effective November 1, 2009 and there will be a public hearing for both the emergency and permanent rule later this fall.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) in plain language on the subject of Autism Insurance will soon be available on the ASW
listserve and on the ASW website.
ASW 2010 Annual Conference
The conference keynote speakers are Temple Grandin, Paula Kluth and Eric Courchesne.
As many of you know, Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is inarguably the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the
world. She has been featured on major television programs, such as "ABC's Primetime Live", the "Today Show", "Larry King
Live", "48 Hours" and "20/20" and written up in national publications, such as Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S.
News and World Report, and New York Times.
Paula Kluth, Ph.D., will be addressing the topic of ―The Problem with Behavior Problems: Supporting Students with Autism &
Other Disabilities‖ Come and explore fresh ways to think about ―behavior problems‖ in inclusive schools. Dr. Kluth will examine
where problems come from, who ―owns‖ them, and how our language and approaches can both create behavior struggles and
minimize them.
Eric Courchesne, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading experts on the neurobiology of autism. He is the overall Director and
principle investigator of the UCSD Autism Center of Excellence, and is also the director of the UCSD Autism Center’s MRI Project
on early brain development in autism.

2009 has been a year to celebrate! Due to the unwavering support of Governor Jim Doyle and the genuine
commitments of key legislators, Wisconsin is about to inaugurate an unparalleled autism insurance coverage. It is head
and shoulders above any other autism insurance program in the country. ASW is proud to be a part of this change. We
thank each family who took the time to testify at the hearings or contact their legislators. Your voice was heard, loudly.
Along with celebrating, there is a great cause for concern. The prevalence rate of autism is increasing. Estimates are
now between 1-91 to 1-100 births, according to the Autism Society of America. ASW is not prepared for the growing
numbers of autism in Wisconsin. We need your help.

General Conference Information
Lodging reservations must be made directly with the hotel.
Call: toll free 800-236-3330. Call soon; a limited number of rooms are blocked at a special rate of $105 per night for
single or double occupancy standard double or king suite; $147 for a single or double occupancy executive suite.
Room reservation cut off date is February 19, 2010; all unconfirmed rooms will then be released to the general public.

Parking: Complimentary parking is available for Hotel Sierra overnight guests. Additional parking is located at the
Main Street Parking Ramp connected via skywalk to the hotel. The current charge is fifty (50) cents per hour. This is a
city-owned parking structure, and the Hotel has no control over prevailing rates.
Complimentary Breakfast & Beverages: All overnight guests will enjoy a full breakfast each morning from 6:30 a.m. to
9:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday, and 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the West Atrium. All overnight
guests who are at least twenty-one (21) years of age are invited to enjoy complimentary beverages each evening in
the West Atrium.
Complimentary Amenities: All overnight guests are invited to indulge in the complimentary use of a large indoor
pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and exercise room.
In order for ASW to NOT increase the conference fee during these difficult
economic times, lunch will be provided Thursday ONLY, for the pre-conference
workshop. Friday and Saturday, all attendees will be on their own for lunch. Lists
of restaurants in the area will be available at the registration desk.
Scholarships for Parents:
WI FACETS, Wisconsin’s Parent Training and Information Center, has a limited number of partial scholarships available
for parents of Birth to 6 year old special needs children to attend their first professional development conference.

County Funded Programs/Waiver Programs: Check with your county coordinators. Most cover expenses for parent
trainings.
Local Chapters: Check with your local Autism Society chapter. Several of them offer scholarships.
ASW: ASW has a limited number of Parent Scholarships available. Contact the ASW office to apply.
REDUCED REGISTRATION FEE FOR CURRENT ASW/ASA MEMBERS:
If you receive the ASW newsletter, this does not mean that you are an ASW member. Your newsletter mailing label
states your status. If you are a current member with either a local chapter or ASW, your label will state your
expiration date. You will not be able to register for a member discount unless you are a current member OR you are a
parent of a child with an autism spectrum disorder.







All registration forms must be complete and accompanied with a check, purchase order, or Visa or MasterCard
information.
Only an e-mail confirmation will be sent, if provided with an e-mail address.
Registration deadline is March 5, 2010.
On-site registration is subject to an additional $25 fee and space availability. Handouts are not guaranteed.
Written cancellation requests must be received by March 5, and will be charged a $25.00 processing fee.

TIPS for conference attendees:
 Dress is casual; it is helpful to bring a pad of paper, pen/pencils and highlighter.
 Upon arrival, go to the ASW registration desk to check in and receive your name tag and conference book.
 If possible, arrive early, take time to browse through the conference information, check agenda to note
any changes and check the hotel map to know where the sessions you plan to attend are located.
 Some sessions are very popular so try to get to the session as early as possible to be sure of having a seat.
 Take time to browse the bookstore and exhibits; talk to the exhibitors.
 Take time to network with others; Friday evening activities are a great place to do this.
 Realize that rooms will be too warm/cold for some, just right for others. Dress in layers.
 You can expect some sessions may have audio-visual equipment problems.
 ASW will make every effort to accommodate your individual needs. If you require assistance to fully
participate in this conference, ASW requires notification by February 12, 2010.
If you are registering your child with an autism spectrum disorder for the
conference, please keep in mind that the child needs to be at least 10 years of age,
and accompanied by a support person, if needed. Child care is not available!

Regular Registration Form:
 Parent/and or ASW Member – this is the fee if you are a family member of an individual on the autism
spectrum, and/or if you are a current ASW dues paying member.
 Non-Member/Professional – this is the fee if you are NOT a dues paying member of ASW.
 Person with ASD – this is the fee for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder registering for the
conference.
 Support Person – this is the fee for an individual attending the conference strictly to provide support
for an individual on the autism spectrum that is also attending the conference.

Special Events Registration Form: This form is used for individuals on the autism spectrum who are
attending the conference and wish to participate in either or all of the following: Art Show, Favorite
Things Display, or Talent Show.
GRADUATE CREDIT: One Graduate Credit can be applied for, through Viterbo University, for attending any two days
of the conference. Apply and pay for this credit when you arrive at the conference.
Pre-Requisite: Bachelor’s Degree Fee: $160.00

Paula Kluth Biography
Dr. Paula Kluth is a consultant, teacher, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with teachers and
families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities and to create more responsive and engaging
schooling experiences for all learners. Paula is a former special educator who has served as a classroom teacher,
consulting teacher, and inclusion facilitator. Her research and professional interests include differentiating instruction,
and supporting students with autism and significant disabilities in inclusive classrooms.
She is the author of “You’re Going to Love This Kid”: Teaching Students with Autism in Inclusive Classrooms ; the lead
editor of Access to Academics: Critical Approaches to Inclusive Curriculum, Instruction, and Policy, and the co-author of
four texts: A Land We Can Share: Teaching Literacy to Students with Autism; Joyful Learning: Active and Collaborative
Learning in the Inclusive Classroom; You’re Welcome: 30 Innovative Ideas for Inclusive Schools, and Just Give Him the
Whale: 20 Ways to Support & Honor the Passions & Interests of Students with Autism.

Education: The Education Strand sessions are those that can benefit individuals with autism spectrum disorders in
the educational setting.
Home/Community: The Home/Community Strand sessions deal with issues that can benefit those on the autism
spectrum in their home environment or in the community.
Intervention: The Intervention Strand sessions are sessions dealing with different approaches of intervention for
those on the autism spectrum.
Across the Lifespan: This Strand includes topics of interest across the lifespan concerning those with Autism
Spectrum Disorders.

“The Neural Origins of Autism: Evidence of Prenatal and Early Postnatal Brain Growth
Abnormalities”
Research on possible brain growth defects in autism during early fetal development in autism
will be presented. Such early abnormalities could lead to aberrant brain growth and function
during the first two years of life and to the emergence of autistic behaviors.
Eric Courchesne is one of the world’s leading experts on the neurobiology of autism. He is the
overall Director and principle investigator of the UCSD Autism Center of Excellence, and is also
the director of the UCSD Autism Center’s MRI Project on early brain development in autism. His research and the
Center are dedicated to uncovering the brain bases and genetic causes of autism. Current MRI studies of autism aim to
identify the brain structures that are abnormal at infancy in autism and to discover patterns of abnormal early brain
growth.

In order for us to serve you effectively, ASW recommends you pre-register for the conference.
All prices listed are per person; you must be a current member for reduced fee; check the mailing label on your
ASW newsletter for membership status and expiration date.
Lunch will be provided for the Thursday Preconference ONLY.
Purchase orders and/or group registrations must be submitted simultaneously.
Registration will be accepted by mail or fax only. Registration forms must be filled out completely and a form
of payment must be included; forms of payment include a purchase order, credit card authorization or a check,
made payable to ASW Conference.

Youth Information Sheet
ASW Conference 2010
1. The Youth Activities Strand is a ―track‖ of presentations in the ASW conference designed specifically for youth
on the autism spectrum. The underlying vision for the strand is to include, accept and validate the individuals
whose very being is the driving force for ASW.
2. You must register specifically for the Youth Strand to participate in all its activities. Your nametag will be your
ticket to get in. There will be a special registration area for Youth Strand participants.
3. Autism individuals of all functional levels, ages 10 and up, are welcome, but the Youth Strand will not provide
care-giver or support services. If you need assistance in the Strand activities, please arrange for appropriate
support.
4. Special care has been taken to include individuals with autism spectrum in planning these activities. Your
unique characteristics (such as sensory defensiveness and communication needs) have been taken into account
as much as possible.
5. All Youth Strand activities are listed in the program along with the rest of the conference information. All
activities are optional. You can attend any session in any other track in the conference. Feel free to leave an
activity at any time if you feel uncomfortable or tired.
6. Those under 18 will need to sign in and out of the hospitality rooms. This is to keep track of participants for
safety reasons. For those under 18, we will ask you to please provide a cell phone number, or which session a
parent or guardian is attending so we may contact them if needed, once you arrive at the conference.
7. There will be an Art Show again this year on Friday and Saturday. The art show set up starts at 7:30 am Friday.
Items should be taken down by 2:00 pm on Saturday. You may sell your artwork in the exhibit area for a fee of
$30, if interested. If you would like to take advantage of selling your artwork, or anything else, please fill out
the Exhibitor Prospectus on the website, www.asw4autism.org, and send it to the address listed with a check for
$30. Indicate your interest to participate in the Art Show on the appropriate registration form and you will be
contacted with more details. Our definition of ―Art‖ is very broad and inclusive. Display anything you are
proud of.
8. There will be a pizza supper at 5:30 pm on Friday night for conference participants who are on the spectrum and
their families. This year we are not able to provide any special diets. We do encourage those with special
dietary needs to attend and bring their own food.
9. There will be no quiet room provided this year. We encourage participants who need a break from the
conference to either go to their hotel room or the adult hospitality room.
10. There will be one hospitality room for adults on the spectrum and two hospitality rooms for youth on the
spectrum this year. The Youth hospitality rooms will consist of one for 10-14 year olds and one for 15-18 years
olds.
11. Each Youth hospitality room will include one video game system. Usage on these systems will be monitored by
volunteers. Our main priority is the safety of all conference participants.
12. There will be a Talent Show again this year on Friday Evening after the Pizza Supper. We will have time for
twelve performances. Indicate your interest to participate in the Talent Show on the registration form and you
will be contacted with more details. Talent show participation is first come first serve, with first choices going
to those who haven’t participated in the year prior.
13. One goal of the ASW Conference is to treat everyone with respect and kindness. Differences are celebrated
here. So relax, have fun and just be yourself.

The parent support group meets year-round on the 2nd Sunday

Monkey Joe’s Indoor Air Gym is scheduled on Saturday,

December 19th, Saturday — Hometown Holiday with the
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. A concert, sing-a-long, and
holiday party for the families of the Autism Society of
Southeastern Wisconsin and the Down Syndrome Association
of Wisconsin. 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 935
W. Wisconsin Avenue, downtown Milwaukee. Treats and hot
chocolate with Santa and Mrs. Claus after the one-hour
concert/sing-a-long. Free for members. Please register by
