Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company
JANUARY—
JANUARY—APRIL 2015
Dear Quilters,
I have wished this for you every year: Happy New Year to you and your family. May you be
blessed with good health and happiness! (And of course, may you be blessed with the desire to
quilt!)
Recently, I was watching the news one night, when the sports reporter showed what he thought
was the best play of 2014. Well....it got me to thinking about 2014 here in the shop. The best notion that we discovered in 2014 was Grip Strips. Every quilter from beginner to the most experienced should have these strips on their rulers. They are little vinyl adhesive strips that you adhere
to the edge on the wrong side of your ruler. You know how your ruler can slide a little bit when
you're rotary cutting? One hundred percent guaranteed - no slipping and sliding if you have the
Grip Strips on your ruler. You don't even have to move your hand up the ruler while you are rotary cutting. The best $10 you can spend with no guilt!
I've decided to make a New Years resolution this year. I'm going to make a quilt using
leaders and enders. I've always used a leader when I sew. You know how the thread can bunch up
into a bird's nest under the fabric when you start out sewing or the fabric gets sucked down into the
bobbin area, or the fabric doesn't move and the needle keeps going up and down and
creates a little thread ball....well I use a small piece of material to start my sewing with to
prevent those problems and continue using it every time I start sewing so eventually it is covered
in thread. I toss it out and start with a new scrap. So, I've decided to cut 2" squares from my
scraps and sew two together at a time as my leader and also now sew one on the end of whatever
I'm sewing to become my ender - but it becomes the new leader- a purpose now for those
leaders and enders. It's sort of like sewing two quilts at the same time. I'm going to continue
doing this throughout the year to hopefully end up with enough 16 patches to make a quilt. I'm
going to set it together with black. Years ago my mom made a scrappy 16 patch quilt set with
black which was very striking. Another reason now for thinking of my mom as I'm sewing. If this
"leaders and enders's" business sounds confusing, I'll show you what I mean when you come in.
Have you made a New Year's resolution?

Scrapitude Quilt
1st Friday of the month for 3 months, starting Feb. 6th, 10:00 - 3:00
We have a celebrity in our midst as Quilter's Newsletter magazine picked this pattern up from
Pinterest. It was originally written as a mystery quilt by Charlotte, but we aren't doing it as a mystery - as
we wanted you to see ahead of time what you'll be making. You certainly can use a dark or light background, and the more different colors you have for the blocks, the better. It will be set on point, so that
will be a great skill to learn if you haven't done that technique yet. I'm thrilled to have the designer of
the pattern in our classroom.

This is the new Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop pattern for 2015. You can only purchase it through a
Certified Shop or a Certified Instructor, and with Mt. Pleasant being a Certified Shop, and Barb being a
Certified Instructor- you're covered- you can purchase it here. This is a Technique of the Month (TOM)
pattern. Just like it says: you learn one technique a month. Everyone will find success and you will end
up with a completed 78" x 78" wall quilt or add extensions for a 98" x 98" quilt. I'm really excited about
this pattern. Many of you have already seen the quilt hanging in the shop. Mary Lou and I went to
Montana this past September to sew the quilt (wallhanging size) under Judy's tutelage as the pattern
had not gone to print at that time. (Maybe we were guinea pigs?...but anyway...our quilt hung at Quilt
Market in Houston and just got back from a tour in Australia with Judy (the quilt-not me-darn it!) The
quilt is named so appropriately - beautiful Birds of Paradise flowers are in this quilt. You will learn Judy
Niemeyer's paper piecing techniques, and her method of applique. I had only been a straight stitch
edge machine applique gal before I went out, but came back with a new enthusiasm and love for
machine applique. I would like to impart this same excitement to you. You DO NOT have to have made
a Judy Niemeyer pattern to take this class. (My next one will be the queen size.) Kits available.
