ADSU / Library Science Comprehensive Exam Information On Campus or Proctored at a site near your home (if you live more than 50 miles from Murfreesboro) ON CAMPUS EXAM TAKERS Saturday, April 11, 2015 9 a.m. – 12 noon in College of Education Building Rm. 164 Map on MTSU website at http://www.mtsu.edu/maps.php Make sure that you study the Library Science website materials for Comprehensive Exam! Three of the questions on that site will be on the test Taking the exam The exam has instructions on the left side. Make sure that you follow these instructions. The bluebooks can be used for outlining, webbing, brainstorming that precedes your writing of the exam. Use the covers for this type of pre-writing activity. Tips and Directions: Three hours is allotted for writing. The answers should take 3 hours to write. Each question is answered in its own bluebook; bluebooks are included in the exam envelope that you will receive at the exam On the front of each bluebook include the question number and the short title that is provided On the front of each bluebook, include your name Writing style is graded as well as content. Cross-outs and other errors count against your scoring You may use the back or covers of the bluebooks to make notes/outline etc. Use sources, but do not include a list of references—just cite within the essays with the author/date form that APA uses. Pages are not required, just author and date. Empowering Learners, Woolls, Curry-Lance, Kuhlthau, Standards for the 21 Century Learner, and other textbooks st are expected sources—used in Libs 6110, Libs 6200, etc. Knowledge of Common Core ELA standards needed. All answers will include accommodation for students of differing learning abilities. Make connections in the essays—connections to real life and to other texts. Support your statements. Page 1 of 3 Dictionary / thesaurus is allowed but not an electronic version—no internet enabled device is allowed Other course texts that you used, such as Krashen, should be used when applicable. Probable topics that you must know: Cataloging rules including MARC and AACR and RDA Common Core standards and how to use them in library program Empowering Learners Basic principles of different process models and of Loertscher’s taxonomy AASL documents on confidentiality, intellectual freedom, etc. Variety of children’s and young adult literature titles and themes of the books (from the reading lists) Variety of web based tools and how they can be incorporated into teaching. When it is appropriate to use them. Characteristics of learning styles. The TEAM rubric for evaluating librarians The exam is graded by Professor Boudreau-Henry or Mrs. Sanders. Once the exam is graded, you will receive an email from her by April 23, 2015 You will also receive an ‘official’ letter from the Department. ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR A PROCTORED EXAM? If you live more than 50 miles from campus or have received permission from Professor BoudreauHenry, you may arrange for a proctor. Proctored exams are arranged through the Testing Center, not through the department. The Testing Center will send Professor Boudreau-Henry the information about your proctor and date. Arranging the test The off campus exams are arranged ONLY through the Testing Center at University College http://www.mtsu.edu/universitycollege/distance/testing.php Here are the conditions and the application for a proctored, off campus test http://www.mtsu.edu/universitycollege/distance/testing_offcampus.php You must arrange for the proctor and site and you must notify the Testing Center at least two weeks in advance of the testing date. The exam can be taken between April 1 and April 18, 2015. The exam must be postmarked no later than April 19, 2015. Arriving at the test site The proctor will give you the exam questions. The exam is sent from the MTSU Testing Center via email to the proctor. The exam is written into bluebooks (of any size) that you bring. The exam consists of 2-3 questions. Each question is answered in its own bluebook. You must bring the return envelope and the bluebooks. (If you send me your snail mail address pronto, I will mail 3 bluebooks to you) Bluebooks are used at all colleges for exams so you should be able to find them at a local community college bookstore. Bring 3 UNMARKED bluebooks to the exam (any size is okay). Give those to the proctor. The proctor will examine them to make sure the bluebooks have no marks on them and return those to you. Page 2 of 3 The proctor will place these items into the envelope The bluebooks The exam paper The verification from MTSU’s testing center Professor Boudreau-Henry MUST GET ALL OF THE MATERIALS BACK IN ORDER TO GRADE THE EXAM. You will have 3 hours to write the exam. Returning the exam bluebooks to Professor Boudreau-Henry You must supply an envelope that is addressed (see below) and has sufficient postage. Recommended envelope: a sturdy cardboard mailing envelope 8x11 or larger. The paper manila envelopes are not sturdy enough and we have had one case of the bluebooks falling out of the envelope during the mailing process. Professor Boudreau-Henry received the envelope, but no bluebooks! Luckily, the Nashville post office did find the bluebooks. Before you give the envelope to the proctor.... 1. Put this address on the envelope for the mailing to address Kathryn E. Include $5.00 worth of postage on the envelope 3. Put this address on the envelope for the return address K Boudreau-Henry 1722 Cason Trail Murfreesboro, TN 37128 Practice writing one-hour essays in sample bluebooks. If you can fill about ½ the book in one hour, you have enough content. Whether it is meaningful content depends upon the depth, number of ideas, use of the sources, and writing style. Be critical of your writing! Shallow platitudes with no support is not passing. Page 3 of 3
