Mungret St. Pauls Newsletter 7 April 2015
U12 Camogie
Our under 12 girls had their first outing of the year in a blitz tournament against Murroe Boher and Na
Piarsaigh on Saturday evening 28 March in Mungret. The first match against Na Piarsaigh was
unusual in that it was the girl’s first experience of fifteen aside on the full sized pitch. We did not start
well and, despite having played downhill with the aid of a stiff breeze, we arrived at the half time
whistle having failed to trouble the scoreboard, though at least our opponents had fared no better.
Nontheless, we were showing signs of promise, with Aoife Ryan and Sarah Butler in particular playing
well. We were under siege for most of the second half, and it took a fantastic save in goal from Ciara
O’Keefe to keep us in it. We did however manage to spend the last few minutes on the attack, with Ella
Murnane and Zoe Page going very close in the final seconds. We did well in the end to get away with a
nil-nil draw, thanks mainly to some tigerish defending from Grace O’Keefe and Caoimhe Nestor.
We got off to a great start against Murroe Boher. Aisling McGuinness celebrated finally being let out
from goals by scoring a superb point. This was followed up by goals from Tara Nealon and Bronagh
Byrne to put us well in control by half time. However, Murroe-Boher made us fight every inch of the
way in the second half. Ella Mason put in some great clearances, while Ciara Brennan and Aela
Gleeson held the full back line superbly. Ava Murnane and Holly Roche hassled and harried their
opponents every chance they got, and we eventually got over the line on a scoreline of 2-1 to 1-0. Team:
Aoife Ryan, Sarah Butler, Ciara O'Keefe, Ella Murnane, Zoe Page, Grace O'Keefe, Caoimhe Nestor,
Aisling McGuinness, Tara Nealon, Bronagh Byrne, Ella Mason, Ciara Brennan, Aela Gleeson, Ava
murnane, Holly Roche.
We were next into battle the following Saturday April 4 against the same teams plus Patrickswell, for a
round of matches to which we were delighted to welcome back Fiona Kinnevane and Derbhala Smith.
The first match against Na Piarsaigh followed the pattern of the previous week's match until shortly
into the second half when a Tara Nealon point finally broke the deadlock. A feature of the game up to
this point was some courageous defending from Ella Mason, who over and over again got the better of
physically bigger opponents. Amy Connolly and Sarah Butler were making use of their pace both in
attack and defence, however we were punished for slack defending by two quickfire Na Piarsaigh
attacks, and lost out on a score of 2-0 to 0-1.
Next up was a terrific match against Murroe Boher, with Bronagh Byrne and Aisling McGuinness
pushing us into a 0-2 to 0-0 half time lead, which was erased on the resumption by a long-range goal.
We were now chasing the match and were put to the pin of our collar by the Murroe girls, who in the
end were very unfortunate to concede a deflected goal, to which Ciara Brennan added a point to bring
us home on a winning scorline of 1-3 to 1-0. Both ourselves and Patrickswell were a bit flat in the last
match, which reflected the intensity of proceedings up to this point. Scores from Caoimhe Holmes,
Ciara O'Keefe and Aela Gleeson put us in control of this one, and Zoe Page completed the scoring with
a fine point from play, steering us home 3-1 to 0-0. It was a great display from the girls, and in
particular, Caoimhe Nestor and Holly Roche are improving with every match. Well done to everyone,
thanks to all the parents for their support, and thanks to Na Piarsaigh and Murroe Boher for providing
two sporting matches, likewise to Patrickswell and thanks additionally to the latter club for hosting.
Team: Sarah Butler, Ciara O'Keefe, Zoe Page, Caoimhe Nestor, Aisling McGuinness, Tara Nealon,
Bronagh Byrne, Ella Mason, Ciara Brennan, Aela Gleeson, Holly Roche, Derbhala Smith, Fiona
Kinnevane, Amy Connolly, Caoimhe Holmes.
The last match in this round of blitzes is scheduled to take place next Saturday April 11 at 11am in
Murroe Boher, additional details to follow by text.
