It’s as simple as that for the folks at Turner Contracting, Inc. of Bedford,
Indiana. Operating by a standard of “pure performance,” their reason
for choosing the John Deere 460E Articulated Dump Truck doesn’t come
as much of a surprise. And while the truck’s hauling capacity was its
biggest selling point, Turner Contracting has been pleasantly surprised
by the loads of additional benefits the truck brings to the jobsite.

STARTING FROM ONE
Steve Turner has worked in the mining
industry the majority of his life, and in
2004 he decided to establish his own outft.
Starting with a single-dozer job in Illinois,
Turner Contracting has branched out
across the country, growing to a force of
75 employees and scheduled to soon start
work in Canada. “We managed to grow
so quickly just with good hard work,” says
Turner. “I think that’s what companies
look for, and when you do a good job,
the word spreads.”

At today’s jobsite, the Lehigh Permanente
Quarry in Los Altos, California, Ryan
Bailey, foreman of Turner Contracting, is
the man responsible for matching up the

challenge of being the foreman — being

things are done. I make sure we get the

Once those four buckets are in the bed, the
460E’s 13.5L EPA Interim Tier 4/EU Stage IIIBcertifed engine, exclusive downhill-descent
control, and adaptive suspension get busy
proving its worth. “The other week we had
torrential rains and heavy winds making a mess
of the jobsite,” says Bailey. “But our 460E ADTs
did wonderfully. They still performed like when
it’s dry, and didn’t miss a beat.” That’s saying
a lot, considering the 85-foot haul roads with
20-percent inclines the trucks are traversing.
This stellar combination of power and
agility delivers across all Turner Contracting
jobsites. “We work our John Deere trucks
from one extreme to the other,” says Turner.
“Even axle-deep in mud, they’ve performed
excellently.”
COMFORTABLE AND CUSTOMIZABLE

In addition to being user friendly, the trucks
are also fnancially friendly for Turner
Contracting. “What we once accomplished
with four competitor trucks, we can do with
three Deere,” says Bailey. “That saves us on
manpower and maintenance, which makes
my job easier.”
One of the greatest assets of John Deere
equipment is a robust dealer network,

service have been really great,” says Bailey.
“Anytime I have an issue I just make a
phone call, and they’re all over it. We’ve
had a few little issues, but the uptime on
the Deere trucks has been wonderful.”
It also makes Keaton Turner’s job easier. Steve
Turner’s nephew and right-hand man for
estimating projects, Keaton works to ensure
optimum efciency on each job, and he likes
what he sees in the 460E. “The biggest selling
point with the John Deere trucks was the costper-ton versus the competitor. They haul more
payload with comparable fuel consumption, so
that brings our costs down considerably.”
Another asset helping Turner Contracting keep

“I get alert notifcations for things like low
tire or oil pressure, which helps us prevent
premature failure,” says Keaton. “We have a lot
of tires on the ground, so catching small issues

RAIL PROJECT HELPS
REVIVE DETROIT
If you thought the Motor City was down for the count, think
again. The former automotive capital of the world may have
been knocked down a few times in recent years. But after
a positive restructuring of its fnances, Detroit has gotten
itself of the mat and is ready to come out swinging again.
Signs of urban renewal are everywhere, with new businesses,
restaurants, and apartments sprouting up, spurred by
investment by companies such as Quicken Loans® Inc. and
General Motors, and an infux of new residents. Funded by
a mix of public and private investment, a new $650-million
entertainment district is being built in the heart of downtown, covering a 45-block area. That’s about the area
of Greenwich Village in New York City or Georgetown in
Washington, D.C. The district will include a new arena for
the Detroit Red Wings.
At the center of the new development is the M-1 Rail project,
a 3.3- mile streetcar line that is expected to transport an
estimated 5,000 passengers per day when it is completed
around the end of 2016. “The project is going to be a real
stepping stone to Detroit’s recovery and revitalization,” says
Mark Gafney, corporate equipment manager, Stacy and
Witbeck, Inc. “This city deserves that. There has always been
a real sense of pride in this city, and we are honored to be part
of a project that helps restore that pride. It’s really exciting.”
Partners in success
With 30 years’ experience, Stacy and Witbeck is one of
the country’s leading builders of streetcar, light rail, and
commuter rail. One of its frst projects was restoring part
of the historic San Francisco cable car line. The heavy civil
contractor has also completed projects in Portland, Seattle,
Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston.
The company handles all aspects of construction related
to rail transportation, including utility work, earthwork,
structures, bridge construction, and electrical systems
for light rail, streetcar, and commuter rail, as well as
maintenance and operations facilities.
Managing urban projects such as the M-1 Rail project is
extremely complex. Stacy and Witbeck must have reliable
John Deere sales and service support. “John Deere lays the
groundwork and makes sure we have consistent service
throughout the John Deere dealer network, no matter
where we are working, whether it is in Detroit or California.”

The project is located the farthest east the company has
worked. “Our partnership with John Deere has really eased
the transition through their exceptional equipment and
service,” says Tom Gilman, Stacy and Witbeck’s project
manager for the M-1 project. “They really take care of us.”
For the Detroit project, Stacy and Witbeck works with
John Deere dealer AIS Construction Equipment Corp.
“AIS is an exceptional dealer,” says Gafney. “Our main
contact, Byron Miller, has been fantastic. He makes sure
we get everything we need, whether it’s sales support on
new equipment or help from their full-service shop.”
Through AIS, Stacy and Witbeck takes advantage of Deere’s
Ultimate Uptime program, a customizable support solution
available exclusively from Deere dealers. In addition to
John Deere WorkSight™ telematic system capabilities,
dealers such as AIS can work with customers to build an
uptime package that meets their specifc needs, including
customized maintenance and repair agreements, onsite parts
availability, extended warranties, fuid sampling, responsetime guarantees, and training. For example, AIS is involved
with a local high school to provide vocational education in
servicing construction equipment that eventually leads to
employment opportunities. “They’ve extended that training
to our company,” says Gafney. “That’s been an excellent
source of highly qualifed service techs.
“Our relationship with Deere is more than simply transactional. They’ve given us the support and education we
needed when we needed it. They’ve really helped us to
succeed. They are a part of our success — a true partner.”
Lions and Tigers and Deere, oh my
We caught up with Stacy and Witbeck as crews were
completing a stretch of streetcar line that winds through
the theater district past Ford Field, home of the Detroit
Lions, and Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.
Numerous John Deere machines, including a 544K Wheel
Loader, a 210K Tractor Loader, a 410K Backhoe, and 85D
and 135D Excavators, are constantly at work, hauling
materials, placing rail, cleaning up, and providing muscle
for whatever else needs to be done.
“We’re working a tight corridor here,” explains Blair
Christensen, equipment manager, Stacy and Witbeck.
“We use our backhoes, skip [tractor] loader, and smaller
excavator to get into confned areas, while our 544K hauls
heavier materials around.”

The 544K Wheel Loader helps place rail and move large
footbridges, which allow pedestrians to cross track that is
under construction. “It has a quick-coupler, so it can quickly
switch from forks to buckets. We use it to haul everything
from pieces of rail and ties to road base. It’s very versatile.
And it’s got great visibility, so the operator can see where
the bucket is being placed and where the tires are. That’s
important on a crowded jobsite.”
The 210K “skip” loader is sneaky good. “Our skip loader is a
unique little machine that has become the sleeper in our feet.
A lot of operators shy away from it because they think it’s just
another loader. But we have a couple of key operators who
have shown us what that machine can really do. It’s proven
to be a very valuable machine in our feet.”
Superior grading ability makes it the perfect machine for
the project. “With the six-way box on the back and a good

in our fnish-grading process,” says
Sean Furey, the company’s general
superintendent. “It has been a fantastic
piece of equipment for what we do.”
John Deere backhoes are probably Stacy
and Witbeck’s most utilized piece of
machinery nationwide. “I’ve been with
the company for 10 years, and there
hasn’t been a project where we didn’t
use multiple John Deere backhoes. They
do everything from keeping up with
temporary paving to trench excavating.
Using a breaker attachment, they can
remove sidewalks.
“The 410K is our main utility machine.
It can hook up to a variety of attachments, which makes our lives easier.
It can go anywhere and get into tight
spaces. Plus it’s simple to operate,
which is important because we have
a lot of apprentice operators. They
can pick it up really quickly.”

RAIL REVIVAL
The Detroit M-1 Rail Project is a 3.3-mile circulating streetcar that
will run along Woodward Avenue through the heart of downtown
Detroit. The line will include 20 diferent stations serving 12 stops,
most of them curbside. Construction began in mid-2014. The line
is expected to be operational by late 2016.
Unlike light rail, a streetcar doesn’t require an exclusive trackway.
It can be integrated into the street fow and is more a part of street
life, rather than just a segmented, separate system. That works
well in downtown Detroit because it will connect neighborhoods
with the business district, shopping areas, the stadiums, the theater
district, and Wayne State University. There’s a lot of energy in the
renewal of downtown Detroit, and the rail project has provided a
catalyst for developing new shops, restaurants, and apartments.

“Everything is really accessible,” says
Furey. “Plus our John Deere dealer
is completely proactive, scheduling
periodic maintenance when we’re
not running our machines, so we can
maximize uptime.”
“We can’t have downtime,” adds
Christensen. “If a machine breaks
down, we have a whole crew standing
around. The project comes to a stop.
It can throw of our schedule a week or
more. That’s why it’s so important that
our Deere dealer is a partner on this
project and a big part of its success.”
All the livelong day
AIS assigned a mechanic to support
Stacy and Witbeck 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Using JDLink™,
he prepares weekly reports on the feet,
alerting the company to any potential
issues, so they can be resolved quickly.
Stacy and Witbeck simply gives him the
green light, and he takes care of it. He
also uses JDLink to schedule preventive
maintenance and send email alerts if
coolant levels are low, air flters are dirty,
or there are any other service concerns.
“This is the frst project where we don’t
have a full-time mechanic on-site.
It’s really nice to have a John Deere
mechanic we can rely on, and who
is qualifed to work on any of our
equipment, not just Deere. And if the
dealer can’t handle something, they’ll
fnd someone who can. It’s one-stop
shopping with John Deere.”
“Our John Deere dealer does a great
job keeping us up and running,” says
Ramon DeLeon, civil superintendent,
Stacy and Witbeck. “We simply don’t
have a lot of trouble with these
machines — they are very reliable.
But if something comes up, we can be
confdent AIS will handle any issue in a
matter of hours. If we don’t have time
to do an oil change, they’ll come out
and handle it for us.

“The PCE Lease is just one
part of the total package,

do with dollars and cents,”
