Master Classes
Learn something new every day at the Myerberg! New college-level courses feature enriching sessions that will sharpen and
enhance the minds of lifelong students.
NEW! Art Styles Refresher: Which –ism Is It?
During the Renaissance, artists made great strides in presenting realism in their artwork. Paintings from this time looked
more like the real world, and had believable depth and figures that actually looked human. With the introduction of
Modern Art, the whole purpose of art changed. Artists were no longer interested in using their canvases as a window
to the world. They were instead focused on the canvas as a surface for their thoughts and ideas and feelings. As a result
there was an explosion of art styles: Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Dada, Minimalism, etc. What
influenced the creation of some of these styles? What do the styles look like? Who were some of the artists practicing
each of these styles? This course provides a “refresher” on the history of these styles and more.

India’s culture and civilization date back some 4,500 years ago. People in this diverse country of 1.2 billion speak 22
scheduled languages, worship in temples, mosques, churches and synagogues, and follow their own customs. Beginning
with the significance of Namaste, the way Indians greet each other, we will discuss the role of women in Indian society,
the class and caste system, and the impact of diverse religions on India’s art and architecture. Through the medium of
slides, videos and stories, participants will experience this fascinating country, the world’s largest democracy, which has

NEW! Dance in the Great Musicals
At the beginning of the 20th Century the new-fangled invention the moving camera did not do justice to dance on film.
Later, during the 1940’s, 1950’s, and early 1960’s, often called the “Golden Age” of musical theatre, some of the fabulous
musical-films we love today were produced. Films including Flying to Rio, Top Hat, Oklahoma, Show Boat, Seven Brides for
Seven Brothers, and The King and I introduced exciting dance treasures to the silver screen. How did dance on film evolve?
Silent film stars Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolf Valentino, and finally productions by Busby Berkeley led to solving
the puzzles of how to put dance, a three-dimensional art, onto a two-dimensional screen. We’ll see the history of dance
on film and look at works of some of the great dance directors and choreographers, like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Agnes de
Mille, Jerome Robbins, Gower Champion and Michael Kidel, who brought about the needed changes.

NEW! George Gershwin: The Man I Love!
George Gershwin was the last person one would have thought to be likely to succeed. He came from ordinary immigrant
parents, grew up in New York City, and never finished high school. His talent, however, was clearly in music and was first
noticed when he wrote “Swanee” at the age of 19. After Al Jolson recorded “Swanee,” Gershwin wrote a string of hits—
”Rhapsody in Blue” in 1924, “An American in Paris” in 1928 and “Porgy and Bess” in 1936. Gershwin had a unique feel for
the American popular song and for American popular culture. Although his songs are almost a century old, they work as
well now as they did then. Rediscover this American success story. Instructor: Patti Enoch; Number of Sessions: 4
