GCCTM Spring Dinner, Speaker, and Awards Ceremony
featuring Diane Briars,
President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Diane J. Briars is president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), a
70,000-member international mathematics education organization. Previously, Briars was a
mathematics education consultant; a senior developer/research associate on the NSF-funded
Intensified Algebra Project; and Mathematics Director for Pittsburgh Public Schools. She is a
past president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and has served
in leadership roles in various other national organizations. Briars holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics
Education, M.S. and B.S. in Mathematics from Northwestern University and did post-doctoral
study in the Psychology Department of Carnegie-Mellon University. She began her career as a
secondary mathematics teacher.
Teaching Matters! Turning High Quality Standards into Successful Mathematics Learning
High-quality standards are necessary for students to successfully learn mathematics, but insufficient. Teaching
matters! What teaching practices most effectively support all students’ attainment of the conceptual
understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical problem solving and reasoning capabilities required for
high-level mathematics learning? Learn about eight research-based Mathematical Teaching Practices from the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ recent publication, Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical
Success for All that promote high-quality teaching and increased student learning.

Attend the dinner, the business meeting, Diane Briars’ presentation, and the awards ceremony. Registration/
Networking will start at 4:45. Dinner and Business Meeting: 5:00-6:15, Diane Briars’ presentation and Awards
Ceremony: 6:30-8:00. Cost: $25. Please register for the dinner by May 3rd.
Option 2: Presentation and Awards Ceremony (6:15 PM to 8:00 PM)
Attend Diane Briars’ presentation and the awards ceremony. Registration will start at 6:15. Diane Briars’
presentation and Awards Ceremony: 6:30-8:00. Cost: $5 for in-service and retired educators, $0 for full-time
students, pre-service teachers, and 2015 graduates. Please register for the presentation/awards by May 10th.
