Backyard of the Month PAGE TWO Congratulations to the Drees! PAGE FOUR ANNUAL SHORES DINNER IMPORTANCE OF YOUR VOTE Votes will be counted at our annual Election and Recognition Dinner on May 14 at 5:00 at the Clubhouse. The new Board Members will be announced and Shores residents who have provided support through their services will be recognized with a small gift. All residents are invited to attend. Think you might have the time and energy to be more involved with the day-to-day happenings on the lake, this is a great time to meet with Committee Chairs and join with your neighbors to continue to make East Lake Shores one of the nicest places to live. Please let your street rep know if you will be attending. Their names appear elsewhere in this “Street Representatives” section of this newsletter. It is that time of year again when you will be receiving your annual ballot in the mail. The election has a number of expenses associated with it, including the mailing of ballots to each homeowner. A quorum of votes must be received in order for the election to be official - and to have the initial voting opportunity successful. We do not want to incur expenses for a second mailing/voting so we ask each homeowner to follow the directions on their voting mailer - and return their completed ballot to their street rep, take it to the front desk at the clubhouse or return it to StoneKastle. AROUND THE LAKE NEXT BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING A visitor to Ray and Donna Martin’s Judy Gerstein and Linda Wilson paddle boarding on the lake The next Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled for April 9, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR PARKING CONCERN 1 Just a reminder that trucks with advertising of any kind (commercial vehicles) are to be parked in the pubic streets adjacent to the Shores, not within the parking stalls or driveways. BACKYARD OF THE MONTH The Boat-Thru Committee selected the beautiful rose garden back yard of Frank and Bianca Lynch on Via Maria as their home of the month. PARKING CONCERN 2 Driveway parking is prohibited unless your car can fit 100% in your driveway, perpendicular to your garage door. Clubhouse BEWARE TELEPHONE SCAMS A resident on Via Apolina reported she received a call on March 24 indicating she had failed to report for jury duty and there was a warrant for her arrest. Her caller indicated he was a sheriff and she would need to meet him at Santa Ana Courthouse where she would receive paper work relative to a bond for $5000 or she would be arrested. After asking several questions, the resident determined it was a scam and terminated the conversation. Her concern is for others who may find themselves in a similar conversation. She said that there was just enough conviction on the part of the caller that initially she was concerned there may have been a summons she missed and just enough feedback from the caller that he had her questioning herself. Report any incidents you may hear about to the Yorba Linda Sheriff Department. MORE ABOUT ORIGINAL STONEKASTLE COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OWNERS This month Judy Gerstein sat down with Barb and Allen Griffith on Via Fonte. Barb and Allen were high school sweethearts and grew up in riverside. After they married, they bought a home in Corona. One evening Allen left his job at 6:00 in Santa Ana and did not get home until 10:00. A plane had landed on the freeway. Closing it down. That was when they both decided it was time to move closer to work. A friend from work told Bob about East Lake with the cute houses and little boats. At that time there was a lottery to purchase a home. If you were interested, you had to come to the Sales Office every day for a week and sign up. After the week, they took buyers in order. When Via Fonte was released, they were #5. Pat and Jim Schiada were #1 and got first pick of the center channel views. The Griffiths selected their home because it was their favorite model and they loved the back yard space. They commented that when S and S built the lake they thought the only boats that would be allowed were the small paddle boats - which is why all the docks are so small. They moved into their home in May and their daughter had her reception at the Clubhouse in July. The Griffiths recall that Allen’s father was very worried they were not going to be able to afford such an expensive home so were they! The first to move onto Via Fonte, Allen had to hang out at the escrow office on a Friday night until 7PM to get their keys or they would not have had a place to sleep. Landscaping had to be done within six to nine months and you needed to show you had enough money left over to purchase plants. Twenty-five years later, they redid their patio, adding a built-in barbeque and TV. They spend a lot of time on their patio! Their favorite thing about East Lake is all the community events that the Association puts together. They just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! They were wed on April 3, 1950, on the “Bride and Groom” radio show. Their story was broadcast across the country on the following day as they listened from their honeymoon destination at Zane Grey Manor on Catalina Island. At the time they were married, Bob was an LA cop and Jackie was a professional musician and later an executive secretary for an engineering service. They lived in Downey for 43 years where they raised a daughter and a son. Bob attended law school at night, and, after five years, passed the Bar, retired from LAPD, became a District Attorney, then a private attorney and was appointed to the Bench in 1985 where he served primarily in the Downey Court. Bob served in the US Navy Air Corps during WWII. The Dreeses have traveled extensively throughout the world, Bob on six continents and Jackie on all seven. They have two children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. They moved to East Lake in 1995. Their advice for a long marriage is maintaining a sense of humor and never lose sight of the fact that “Some days are diamonds, some days are stones”. Both state there have been many diamond days. (A big thanks to the Dreeses for sharing this wonderful news. Congratulations on 65 years together.)
