About the Work
À propos de l’œuvre
Each of Tedd Robinson’s solos—Rokudo,
Rigmarole and REDD—has three parts. Each
deals with his personal history, the use of
material as sculpture/movement, and the
notion of balance as metaphor and risktaking device. FACETS reflects these solos.
Tedd describes the creative process
and production method for FACETS as an
idea that “could be compared to smashing
a mirror reflecting all of my work and then,
after the artists have seen themselves in
each fragment, I would re-arrange these
chards to make a new mosaic of images.
I am curious to see how these artists
respond to the works. I am excited to see
their viewpoint, to see what the imagery
stimulates, to see if this work can function as
stimulus for creation in others … it is not so
much looking back as looking at now.”
The buddha compared the universe to
a vast net woven of a countless variety of
brilliant jewels, each with a countless number
of facets. Each jewel reflects in itself every
other jewel in the net and is, in fact, one with
every other jewel.
Les solos de Tedd Robinson—Rokudo,
Rigmarole et REDD—comportent tous
trois parties se rapportant chacune à son
histoire personnelle, à l’utilisation de matériel
sous forme de sculpture/mouvement et à
la notion d’équilibre comme métaphore et
élément de risque. FACETS est un reflet de
ces solos.
Tedd compare ainsi le processus de
création et la méthode de production de
FACETS : « C’est l’éclatement d’un miroir
reflétant toutes mes œuvres et dont j’aurais
recomposé les morceaux une fois que les
artistes s’y seraient reconnus, afin de créer
une nouvelle mosaïque d’images. Je suis
curieux de voir les réactions de ces artistes.
J’ai hâte de connaître leurs points de vue,
de découvrir ce que provoque l’imagerie,
de vérifier si cette œuvre peut stimuler la
création chez d’autres artistes… ce n’est pas
tant un retour en arrière qu’un regard sur le
présent. »
Le bouddha comparait l’univers à un
immense filet dont chaque nœud est un
joyau éclatant aux multiples facettes.
Chaque joyau reflète lui-même les autres
joyaux sertis dans les nœuds du filet, et ne
fait qu’un avec chacun des autres joyaux.

Tedd Robinson
Tedd Robinson
Tedd Robinson is best known for his
idiosyncratic solo dance works, including
the Chalmers Award winning Rokudo:
six destinies in three steps. Robinson’s
choreography juxtaposes spiritually
controlled movement with unexpected
moments of sly, subtle humour. Born in
Ottawa, Tedd Robinson graduated with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University,
and studied at The School of The Toronto
Dance Theatre and with eminent British
visual theatre artist Lindsay Kemp. He first
rose to prominence as Artistic Director of
Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg (19841990), where he created highly theatrical
ensemble works. He returned to Ottawa
in 1990 to pursue a solo career and study
with Peter Boneham at Le Groupe Dance
Lab, and became firmly established as a
choreographer, mentor and solo artist whose
critically acclaimed, award-winning works
won him a multitude of commissions and an
international touring and teaching schedule.
His collaborators have included artists such
as Margie Gillis, Louise Lecavalier, Ame
Henderson and composer/performer Charles
Quevillon. Robinson is Artistic Director of 10
Gates Dancing Inc., a non-profit company
formed in 1998 to promote the development
and performance of contemporary dance
creations. Between 2005 and 2012, Tedd
Robinson established La B.A.R.N., an intimate
venue for creation and performance. Since
2013, he also co-directs Centre Q: a centre
for questioning. His work is influenced
by his six years of study as a monk in the
Hakukaze soto zen monastery in Ottawa. He
is winner of the 2014 Walter Carsen Prize for
Excellence in the Performing Arts, a founding
member of Projet bk, and an Associate

Né à Ottawa, Tedd Robinson a obtenu un
baccalauréat en beaux-arts à l’Université
York et a étudié à la School of The Toronto
Dance Theatre et auprès de Lindsay Kemp,
éminent mime britannique. Il s’est fait d’abord
connaître à Winnipeg alors qu’il était directeur
artistique de la compagnie Contemporary
Dancers (1984-1990), pour laquelle il a créé
des œuvres d’ensemble très théâtrales. De
retour à Ottawa en 1990 pour poursuivre
une carrière de soliste et étudier auprès de
Peter Boneham au Groupe Lab de danse, il ne

et de nombreuses offres de tournées et

Dancing Inc., une compagnie à but non

Angie Cheng
Angie’s story began in Ottawa at Canterbury
and her dance career continues in Montreal
where she “explores the depths of the
moment, diving into the mess of it all.” She
has worked with David Pressault Danse,
MAYDAY/Melanie Demers, Wants and Needs
Danse/Sasha Kleinplatz, Lara Kramer Danse,
Thierry Huard, Tedd Robinson, and Nate
Yaffe. Through the re(creation) of dreams,
imagination and collaboration, she continues
to search for adventure and challenges.
Son histoire a commencé à Canterbury à
Ottawa et continue à Montréal. L’artiste

James Gnam
James Gnam
James Gnam trained at the National Ballet
School of Canada and from 1998 to the
present, has worked with Les Grands
Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Ballet BC,
EDAM dance, Grand Poney and Mayday
Danse. He has had the pleasure of creating,
collaborating and performing in the works
of Crystal Pite, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris,
George Balanchine, Peter Bingham, Thomas
Lehman, Lee Su-Feh, Jacques Poulin-Denis,
Barak Marshall and Melanie Demers. As
the artistic director of the plastic orchid
factory, James develops interdisciplinary
work that focuses the body as a site of social
commentary. In its very brief history, plastic
orchid has created six short works and three
evening length ensemble pieces including:

Ame Henderson
Ame Henderson
Ame Henderson is a Toronto-based artist
and Associate Artist with Public Recordings.
Ame’s choreographic works, researched
and performed widely include Manual for
Incidence (2005), /Dance/Songs/ (2006),
Open Field Study (all together now) (2007),
relay (2010), 300 TAPES (2010), The Most
Together We’ve Ever Been (2009) with
Matija Ferlin, what we are saying (2013),
Room with Sticks (2013) with Tedd Robinson
and Charles Quevillon, HOW TO WORK: a
performance encyclopaedia (2007-present)
with Evan Webber, and two commissions for
Dancemakers. In 2014, Ame was artist-inresidence at the AGO where her project
rehearsal/performance investigated that
institution’s history of live performance.
Henderson/Castle: voyager, a commission
on the invitation of Toronto Dance Theatre
made in collaboration with the acclaimed
musician Jennifer Castle, will tour to a
number of notable Canadian presentation
contexts in 2015. Ame is a member of Projet
bk and is an Associate Dance Artist of the
National Arts Centre.

Charles Quevillon
Charles Quevillon
Since 2005, Charles Quevillon has
developed a direct approach to musical
expression through his electroacoustic and
instrumental work. He studied composition
at the Cégep Saint-Laurent and at the
Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal.
Now, he specializes in the composition of
mixed music. His actual research concerns
principally the composition/choreography
of the musical performance. It’s through his
close collaboration with Tedd Robinson that
he has discovered a passion for movement.
Depuis 2005, Charles Quevillon développe
une approche directe de l’expression musicale
à travers des œuvres électroacoustiques
et instrumentales. Il a fait des études en
composition au Cégep de Saint-Laurent
ainsi qu’au Conservatoire de Musique de
Montréal. Il se spécialise maintenant dans
la composition de musiques mixtes. Ses
recherches actuelles portent surtout sur la
composition/chorégraphie de la performance
musicale. C’est en travaillant en étroite
collaboration avec le chorégraphe

He performs many of his works himself. His
recent piece Corde à Vide was composed
for a suspended musician at the center of a
chime of plucked-string instruments. He was
chosen twice to perfect his compositional
skills at the Orford Arts Centre and once
at the Académie du Domaine Forget and
the Darmstadt summer courses. Charles
received a Dora Award nomination for
his music for Tedd Robinson’s Sticks,
commissioned by Yvonne Ng. He has
received grants from the CAC, CALQ, FQRSC
and the SOCAN Foundation.

une passion pour le mouvement. Il
interprète lui-même plusieurs de ses
pièces dont son œuvre Corde à Vide pour
instrumentiste suspendu au milieu d’un
carillon d’instruments à cordes pincées. Il
se perfectionne à deux reprises au Centre
d’arts Orford, et fait un séjour à l’Académie
du Domaine Forget ainsi qu’au programme
estival de Darmstadt. En plus d’avoir été cité
pour un Dora Award pour la musique de la
pièce Sticks commandée par Yvonne Ng à
Tedd Robinson, il a reçu des bourses du CAC,
du CALQ, du FRQSC ainsi que de la Fondation

Simon Renaud
Simon Renaud
Simon Renaud is a graduate of The School of
Dance in Ottawa. After entering the Toronto
Dance Theatre as an intern (2010-2011),
he became a member of Dancemakers
(2011-2013) and joined the Ottawa Dance
Directive for some projects. Simon is a
member of company Daniel Léveillé Danse
since 2014 and also had the pleasure to join
l’ensemble l’Abrupt in Paris for 2 projects.
He also works for different independent
choreographers such as Caroline Barrière
and Darryl Tracy. Parallel to his career as a
dancer, he has been creating his own work
professionally since 2011. He had the chance
to present his work through many events:
in Toronto (Dancematters, p.s. we’re all
here, summerworks opening, Artspin, Lo-Fi
Dancemakers and She Was) and in Ottawa
(Série Danse 10, Roughcut and ODD is OFF).
Simon Renaud est diplômé de la School of
Dance d’Ottawa. Après un stage au Toronto
Dance Theatre (2010-2011), il devient
membre de Dancemakers (2011-2013) et
prend part à divers projets du Centre de
danse contemporaine à Ottawa. Simon est
membre de la compagnie Daniel Léveillé
Danse depuis 2014 et il a également eu le

Theatre program. Since graduating from
STDT, Sims has gone on to dance in works
by numerous choreographers including Tedd
Robinson, Noam Gagnon, Melanie Demers,
Michael Trent, Darryl Tracy and Andrew
Turner. Currently, Sims is in his third season
as a company member of Ottawa Dance
Directive under the artistic direction of
Yvonne Coutts. Sims’s own contemporary
dance company, Social Growl Dance, was
founded in 2012 and has presented work at
Dance Matters, Gallery 1313, Fresh Blood,
and Dances by Youth for Youth — a project
mentored by Peter Boneham. In 2014,
Social Growl Dance received two creation
residencies supporting Sims’s first full-length
work Are You Still Coming Tonight? His most
recent work is Judy and the Reckless for
Winnipeg’s Nova Dance Collective.

Thierry Huard
Thierry Huard
A graduate of EDCM in 2008, Thierry Huard
is a Montreal emerging choreographer who
has stood out for his distinct artistic vision.
Upon entering the professional world, he
was involved in many local events and has
presented his work many times at various
venues in the city. His repertoire includes
a dozen choreographic works, including
his most recent, GENESIS, acclaimed by
audiences and critics. Over the years
his work has been supported by several
institutions including the Cultural Action of
Cirque du Soleil, CALQ, Circuit-Est, EDCM,
Studio 303, Tangente and Usine C. Thierry is
interested in how remains of ancient rituals
affect the mores of our contemporary
society. From an improvisation process, he
seeks to shed light on ancestral memory
buried deep inside the human psyche.
Diplômé de l’EDCM en 2008, Thierry Huard
est un chorégraphe émergent montréalais
qui a su se démarquer par sa vision artistique
distincte. Depuis son entrée dans le monde
professionnel, il s’est investi dans plusieurs
événements locaux et a présenté à maintes
reprises son travail chez différents diffuseurs
de la métropole. Il a à son actif une douzaine
de pièces dont sa plus récente, GENESIS,
acclamée par le public et la critique. Au
cours des années, il a bénéficié du soutien de
plusieurs institutions dont l’Action Culturelle
du Cirque du Soleil, le CALQ, Circuit-Est,
l’EDCM, le Studio 303, Tangente et l’Usine
C. Thierry s’intéresse à la manière dont les
vestiges de rituels anciens affectent les
mœurs de notre société contemporaine.
À partir d’un processus d’improvisation, il
cherche à mettre en lumière une mémoire
ancestrale enfouie au plus profond de l’être.

Paul Chambers
Paul Chambers
Paul Chambers is a Montreal based set &
lighting designer. Collaborating on new
dance works has always been a priority
for him. Teaching workshops has also been
an important part of his development as
an artist and mentor. At Studio 303 he
teaches a yearly lighting design workshop
for artists. From 2008 to 2013 Paul was
Technical Director at Tangente: Laboratoire
de mouvements contemporains. In 2013
along with fellow designer and educator
David-Alexandre Chabot, they inaugurated
CHA a design collective aimed at creating
and sharing design-based works with artists
from different disciplines.
Paul Chambers est un concepteur lumières
et scénographe établi à Montréal. Sa
collaboration à de nouveaux projets a
toujours stimulé son parcours artistique.
Depuis 2007, notamment avec le studio 303,
il anime des ateliers pédagogiques destinés
aux artistes qui souhaitent approfondir
leurs connaissances sur la lumière et le
processus de conception. De 2008 à
2013, Paul assure la direction technique
de Tangente : Laboratoire de mouvements
contemporains. En 2013, il met sur pied avec

sandra Henderson is a Toronto-based live
arts practitioner who has focused much of
her work in production, technical, touring
and management aspects of performance,
collapsing the notions of ‘creative’ and
‘technical’ with the understanding that they
can not exist without each other. She has
worked extensively with Necessary Angel
Theatre Company, Red Sky Performance,
