Letter of Intent/Statement of Candidacy

Letter of Intent/Statement of Candidacy
It is with a great sense of enthusiasm that I submit my packet for consideration for a Member-At-Large
position on the NACCTEP Executive Board. I have been an educator and program coordinator for over 20
years and active member of NACCTEP since 2005. As the Counselor/Coordinator for the Santa Ana
College Center for Teacher Education, I have worked directly with community college pre-service
teachers for the last 15 years, developed exemplary programs to support them, and have been a leader
and advocate at the local, regional, state, and national levels. In addition to my deep commitment to the
mission of NACCTEP, below are some of the experiences and qualifications that I would bring to the
Executive Board:

Almost 10 years of active membership with NACCTEP; presenter at multiple national conferences;
co-host college and planning committee member for 2014 conference in Anaheim, CA; featured
panelist for Sunday Forum at 2014 national conference.

Twenty years experience as a community college Counselor/Program Leader. Fifteen years
experience as Teacher Education Program coordinator at Santa Ana College including providing
academic, career, and personal counseling to pre-service teachers as well as teaching a “Careers
in Teaching” Counseling course.

Expertise in curriculum development, articulation, and university transfer agreements. Lead
faculty member for the development of two AA degrees (Elementary Education) and two
certificate programs (After School Program) at Santa Ana College; member of statewide Transfer
Model Curriculum (TMC) Faculty Discipline Review Group for Elementary Education; former Vice
President of the Transfer Center Directors Association for the CA Community Colleges.

Served as co-author/project coordinator/campus lead on over $19 million in federal, state, and
local grant projects directly related to increasing the quantity, quality, and diversity of the
teaching population including numerous projects aimed at the STEM preparation of teachers. In
addition to bringing much needed resources to the college, these grants and the partnerships
established with them have expanded curriculum, articulation and transfer opportunities for SAC
teacher education students.

Actively involved in a variety of local, regional, and statewide committees. Served as a
department co-chair, Academic Senate representative, and on a variety of college-level
committees involving accreditation, curriculum, and budget. Currently serves as the co-chair for
the Regional Teacher Education Council and is a co-founder and executive board member of the
statewide Association of California Community College Teacher Education Programs (ACCCTEP).

In addition to working with the Center for Teacher Education, also serve as a Co-coordinator for
the college’s Freshman Experience / Learning Communities Program. Both of these programs are
highly successful and each has been awarded the prestigious Exemplary Program Award by the
California Community Colleges Board of Governors, recognizing outstanding community college
programs.

Two-time co-finalist for the Distinguished Faculty Award at Santa Ana College (2008, 2014).
Recipient of Santa Ana College Profiles in Excellence Awards in Curriculum Development (2007)
and Professional Achievement (2010). Recipient of the National Career Academy Coalition, Henk
Koning Exemplary Partnership Award (2011) and Santa Ana College Transfer Advocate of the Year
(2004).
As an organization, NACCTEP has helped me grow professionally through their national conferences,
publications, and networking. Their advocacy and position papers have assisted me in advocating and
creating a stronger program locally and regionally. NACCTEP has also played an integral role in helping my
colleagues and I here in CA create our own statewide organization.
And finally, NACCTEP has given back to my students by providing scholarships for them to continue their
education and opportunities for them to share their stories. NACCTEP has given so much to both Santa
Ana College and to me professionally.
If selected to the NACCTEP Executive Board, I would be honored and humbled for the opportunity to give
back.
Thank you for your consideration.
