Reports to: NAMI Ventura County Board of Directors
Summary of Responsibility:
The executive director is responsible for achieving the goals of the strategic plan by managing and
operating the organization’s programs and operations under the supervision of the Board. The executive
director is the chief spokesperson for the organization in communications with mental health
professionals, government officials, educators, clergy, philanthropic and corporate funders, media and
the general public.
Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree in human services or relevant field and a minimum of five years’ experience in a
leadership position with supervisory and fiscal responsibility, preferably in a non-profit
organization. A Master’s degree in social work is preferred.
 Excellent oral and written communication skills for serving as an effective spokesperson for the
organization; strong interpersonal skills appropriate for working with diverse stakeholders.
 Ability to use computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, database management
systems (Salesforce), and Internet navigators. Familiarity with QuickBooks, Constant Contact and
social media is desirable.
 Experience in the mental health field and knowledge of the California mental health care delivery
system. Knowledge of Ventura County’s mental health care system desirable.
Responsibilities:
 Serves as staff liaison to the Board; advises and reports to the Board concerning the operations of
the organization.
 Assists the Board in the exercise of its fiduciary responsibility by managing the organization’s
funds and property, maintaining proper financial controls and records, and developing an annual
budget for Board approval.
 Assists Board in establishing policies and procedures and developing short and long-term plans for
accomplishing NAMI Ventura County’s mission. Implements and periodically reviews the
programs, policies, and practices of the organization with the Board.
 Develops, reviews and reports to the Board on the organization’s compliance with applicable
contracts, grants, laws, and regulations. Manages data for state and national reporting.
 Acts as the “face of NAMI Ventura County” by serving as the primary liaison between NAMI
Ventura County and the community. Develops and maintains appropriate relationships with
community groups and mental health advocacy organizations. Acts as an advocate for individuals
and families affected by mental illness. Remains informed about national, state, and local
legislation pertinent to persons affected by mental illness and to mental health professionals.
 Oversees, supervises, and evaluates office staff. Recruits, interviews, and trains new staff.
 Oversees the process of identifying funding sources, developing grant proposals, submitting reports,
and donor cultivation. Assists in fundraising events, particularly the annual NAMI Walk Ventura
County.
 Oversees NAMI Ventura County communications (correspondence, newsletters, website, and
email).
 Prepares an annual report on the outcomes of the annual plan.
 Supports Programs and Services by providing leadership and training to office staff and volunteers.
 Supports all NAMI Ventura County committees and assumes responsibility for other duties as
assigned by the Board.
