Street Appeal a Big Success!
After declining street-appeal
income in the previous two
years, fresh energy was put
into the 2014 campaign. The
result was $13,500 raised; a
whopping 50% increase from
the previous year! A big thank
you to Bronwen Chang for
organising the event, and to all
the volunteers that made it such
a success.
We still believe there is more
potential in this important
fundraiser; the limitation is the
number of collectors we have
available to fill time slots. If you
are able to spare a couple of
hours during the first week of
November, please get in contact
with us at any time and we can
add you to our list of volunteers.
Many people find the collecting
a lot of fun – we don’t accost
people or do a ‘hard sell’. We
find, especially if you have an
animal, people will come to you!

Expanded foster network saves lives
Napier SPCA now has a network of over 50 foster parents which, in part, has been responsible for improved
outcomes for many cats. The shelter statistics for 2014 show a 50% reduction in euthanasia from the previous
year and 27% increase in adoptions. This shows that fostering does save lives.
To be foster parent you need to have your own transport so you can pick up the animals and bring them in if they
need to visit with the vet. You must have a secure area to keep them safe and contained and away from any pets
that you have at home. This could be a spare bedroom, a laundry or bathroom, or a sunroom. Foster cats and
kittens must remain indoors at all times.
We understand that looking after an animal can be a big undertaking, and we want to make it as easy as possible.
Hill’s Pet Nutrition is our major sponsor and they generously supply the Hill’s Science Diet food for foster animals.
We also supply litter, litter trays, bedding, toys, bowls, and anything that we have on hand to make the animals
comfortable while they are staying in your home. If you are inexperienced,
we ensure you get plenty of support until you feel more confident.
Being a foster parent is a rewarding experience that gives you the opportunity
to make a real difference in saving lives.

Volunteers are a true blessing!
One of Napier SPCA’s longest-serving volunteers, Sharon Faulkner,
was awarded a Kiwibank Local Hero medal for her services to the
SPCA. Sharon has just clocked up ten years of volunteering and
says she still finds it as enjoyable and fulfilling as ever. Sharon has
seen a lot of changes in her time with the SPCA and believes there
has been steady improvement in the facilities and the overall care of
the animals coming into the shelter. Sharon has no plans of giving
up anytime soon, and sees the tangible difference she makes to the
animals and always feels appreciated by the shelter staff.

We have a lot of dedicated people who support us ‘behind the scenes’. One such person is Liv Flynn
who cares for all our orphaned ducklings and other birds that come into our shelter. Liv says she “had
a calling” to look after birds after she successfully raised two baby thrushes when she was eight years
old. She says she can still remember the feeling, describing it as “priceless”. Since that time, Liv has
raised and rehabilitated hundreds of birds, and has become known as the local ‘bird lady’ with people
bringing her birds from all over the Hawke’s Bay.
Birds can be tricky creatures to raise; each species requires specialized care. Liv says you need to
spend time teaching birds to feed and fend for themselves as it is not something they will always do
instinctively. Liv allows her birds plenty of time to practice their feeding in her backyard before releasing
them into the wild. This is a vulnerable time for fledglings as they can become easy prey for cats. Liv
has this aspect covered as well: the birds are studiously protected by her two Fox Terrier cross dogs,
who see off any cats. It is dedicated and passionate people like Liv, caring for animals for nothing
except the love of it, that we owe such a huge debt of gratitude.

The Napier SPCA Op Shop “Fetch” is in
desperate need of quality items to sell,
including small furniture items, cookware,
bric-a-brac, children’s toys, clothing
and jewellery. Goods can be dropped off
directly at Fetch in Lower Emmerson Street
(Beside Trade Aid) or at Napier SPCA in
Mersey Street, Pandora.
