In celebration of the Museum’s 25th anniversary, we are presenting Out of the Vault: 25 Years of Collecting, our first comprehensive exhibition of works from the permanent collection. This presentation highlights patrons’ numerous gifts to the Museum over the last quarter century, many of which have never, or rarely, been exhibited. Each gallery space will focus on a different theme, such as past and present portraiture, post-war prints, Tiffany paintings and objects, and vintage posters from many eras. The exhibit explores a diverse range of artists who are strongly represented in the Museum’s collections, among them naturalist John James Audubon, photographer Larry Fink, and Pop art icons Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers and Robert Indiana, among others. Saltzman Family Foundation 2 This exhibition celebrates the Museum’s 25th anniversary through a showing of works held by one of the region’s most prominent families of art collectors. Many of the works on view in The Saltzman Family Collection have previously appeared in Museum exhibitions during our quarter-century history, having been generously lent to these exhibitions by the Saltzmans. The exhibition also honors the late Hon. Arnold A. Saltzman, the Museum’s founding president and guiding spirit behind Nassau County Museum of Art’s transition from a county owned and operated venue to an important regional arts and education institution, governed and funded by a privately-elected board of trustees. A big crowd of Museum supporters was buzzing at the opening of our first-ever exhibition devoted to Chinese art. In China Then and Now, we saw 4th-6th-century Buddhist sculpture collected by Dr. Arthur M. Sackler of Manhasset and had our first look at blue-and-white porcelains collected by Childs and Frances Frick for their Roslyn Harbor estate, now home to the Museum. We were also introduced to the ink drawings of Beijing artist, Liu Dan. The story of Long Islanders passionate about art from China was brought forward in the Second Floor Galleries where we saw objects on loan from present-day Long Island collectors. Members always see the exhibitions first. Among the many local organizations that have benefitted from her participation are the American Liver Foundation of Greater New York, the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, the Theodore Roosevelt Council Boy Scouts of America, the EAC Network, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Additionally, she serves on the Nassau County Film Advisory Board and is a member of the WLIW Committee of WNET.org board of trustees. For Angela, giving back to the community is a natural extension of her work life as publisher of an acclaimed group of community newspapers with a weekly readership of some 150,000 readers. “I always felt there was a need for community newspapers to be involved with charities,” she said, explaining, “I think it’s a way of reaching out to the communities we serve.” Angela Susan Anton, a life-long Long Islander, is the mother of three children. Back in the galleries, they toured the works in the current exhibitions and created nature-inspired lanterns and Chinese chop prints. Chinese tea bags were available to take home to create warmth for the cold winter days to come. Through a film screening and hands-on activities, children and their adult companions learned all about five extinct North American birds: the Labrador Duck, the Great Auk, the Heath Hen, the Carolina Parakeet, and the Passenger Pigeon. Artist Todd McGrain, who was featured in the film, The Lost Bird Project, was on hand to share the story of the large bronze bird memorials he creates and installs in the locations where these extinct birds were last seen in the wild. In a personal salute to one of the extinct birds, children created their own beautiful origami Passenger Pigeons to take home. Partnerships in Action The Museum’s education staff has partnered with Nassau BOCES in a groundbreaking series that uses art, drama, and artifacts to expand and enrich Common Core curriculum. In one of four programs in a series teachers visited the Long Island Children’s Museum, exploring its Native Voices: New England Tribal Families exhibition. Then it was on to Nassau County Museum of Art to see China Then and Now. Other participants in this BOCES series are from the Cradle of Aviation Museum, The Heckscher Museum of Art, Hofstra University Museum, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and The Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor. China Comes to a Gold Coast Mansion In celebration of the Museum’s exhibition, China Then and Now, families participated in a Scavenger Hunt throughout the Mansion and embarked on a journey through time exploring ancient and contemporary art from China. Participants created imaginative Shadow Puppets, played traditional Chinese games, and joined in on a Fan Dance workshop by the NY Chinese Cultural Center.
