HEATHER J. FORTNER Long ago and far away there was a young girl who fell in love with the sea and all of its secrets. For the last 40 years she has been recording algal herbaria, fish, birds, mammals, insects and botanical species of all sorts with ink on paper and fabric. She has worked on the water, printed in ships on the water, lived by the water and it’s probably safe to say that the sea is the love of her life. We here at NPS are most fortunate to share in the fruits of her labors as she has so generously given her scientific knowledge and artistic techniques open heartedly to all of us. For years she has been a force of nature in the mechanics of keeping NPS moving forward and staying strong and has been instrumental in the expansion of our educational programs during our conferences. We are here to acknowledge the contributions to the art of nature printing over 4 decades by someone who we all know and love. Thank you Heather J. for all you have done, given and contributed; thank you for the laughs and the tears, for opening your heart and letting us in. Thank you to a most extraordinary woman. On the following pages you will find all the information for the classes we are offering this year. We have selected a diverse cross section that has something for everyone. On the form that came with this brochure you will need to select two choices for each day; a first and second choice. In the event that both of those classes are already filled you will be contacted by phone or email about another choice. It is doubtful that it will come to that. We are offering at least one fish, one plant and one mixed media class on each day in the hopes that we can please a wider audience. Should you have any questions about the classes before you make your selections, please email Bee Shay and she will be happy to help you. Our classes will all be capped at 14 participants with a few exceptions. Entry into a class is on a first come, first serve basis. No forms will be accepted PRIOR to MAY 1, 2014. The forms will be logged in as they are received by postmark or email send date. Classes will be assigned during the month of June and you will be notified in the July mailing of your class schedule. All forms must be received by MAY 30th. Please mail them to: Bee Shay 2 Windy Way No. 259 Nantucket MA 02554 OR Scan completed form and Email to [email protected] You will be notified with a confirmation in early July with your final balances due, your class schedule, complete class info, including supply lists, and additional fees and contact information for your instructors. Your final response is due back by AUGUST 1. We are making every effort to make FORT WORDEN a most memorable event and hope that you will join us in the spirit of the NPS to “make it so”. DONNA FAY ALLEN NATURE INSPIRED JEWELRY USING POLYMER CLAY MOLDS Participants will learn several techniques using polymer clay to create jewelry with a nature theme. With the “cameo” technique students will use contrasting colors of polymer clay and molds made from seashells; with the direct impression method we will use plant material, or other found natural materials to create direct impressions into the polymer clay; and using the inlay technique we will create a negative space that will be filled with a contrasting color and then sanded to reveal the detail. Different ways to highlight or compliment the detail of our molded objects and impressions will be explored. Students will learn how to make a head pin from brass wire and how to wrap a bead to create a charm. Jewelry will be finished off with a chain or cord. Provided: Polymer clay, jewelry bezels, chain, cord, findings and beads in an antique brass/ black/white/sepia palette. Ovens, dremels, torches, butane, brass wire. Clay shaping tools. Participants provide: Beads, drilled shells of their own selection if desired, polymer clay in a color other than black/white. ARLENE BANDES EXPL0RING THE NATURAL WORLD THROUGH REDUCTION BLOCK PRINTING Reduction block printmaking, often credited to Pablo Picasso, results in unique, multi-colored prints. We will use motifs from our nature prints or the natural world to create a series of prints using Styrofoam plates and Akua inks. The Styrofoam printmaking plates will be incised with different engraving tools and sections will be removed with stencil knives, scissors, punches, etc. In the morning session, we will complete a four color print on several pieces of papers. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to work on a more complex print that will also utilize Akua resist techniques, a twist on traditional reduction block work. Please bring your NPS Tool Kit and both hard and soft brayers to class Existing nature prints for image motivation or to print on are also suggested. HEBE BARTZ PRINTING, DE-PRINTING & RE-PRINTING ON FABRIC We will print beyond plants with sea fans, kelp, shells and yes! even fish and cephalopods, stamps from the Fred B Mullett collection and what ever turns up in the tide pools. GUDRUN GARKISCH TRADITIONAL BOTANICAL PRINT METHODS SAMPLER Please bring your NPS Tool Kit to class! We will explore a sampling of inks and papers using traditional botanical print techniques to create a lovely sampler to use as a reference for printing, inks and papers. HEATHER FORTNER THE SHUNS OF SEAWEED Please bring your NPS Tool Kit Pair of scissors 1 pair forceps tweezers For folks driving: as many newspapers as you can bring. Nature printing with sea weeds (macro marine algae) is no different than nature printing land plants. Where it differs is in the understanding of the nature and characteristics of seaweeds. The workshop deals with the collection, selection, identification, separation, and preparation of northwest specimens- hence the "shuns". We will start with a short field trip to collect a variety of seaweeds in the wrack and take them to the classroom to separate, select the printable ones, identify, and then prepare them by cleaning and laying them out for the pressing and drying process. These specimens, when properly prepared, can be taken home to serve as printable specimens for years. You may also use these to print in the Printing Seaweed workshop. This class is a prerequisite for the Printing Seaweeds session. HEATHER FORTNER PRINTING SEAWEEDS Prerequisite: Attendance in "The Shuns of Seaweed" OR experience in collection of and preparation of marine algal herbaria. This session introduces nature printing techniques suitable for marine algae (seaweeds). Students will utilize specimens collected on the first day of the workshop, or provided Pacific Northwest specimens. You will learn effects of different chemical treatments, the effects of different inks on the specimens, concentrating on oil based inks. We will also work the techniques of masking to integrate printed seaweed into gyotaku images. Please bring to class your NPS Tool Kit 2 pairs forceps tweezers 1 4" soft rubber brayer 1 roll masking tape (1/2"-3/4" tan color) Soft 1" brush The stack of prepared seaweeds from first class Existing gyotaku images on Asian papers (optional) MARILYN HORNOR PAPER MAKING FOR PRINTMAKERS Basics of making paper from various pulps including kozo, gampi, abaca, cotton and mushrooms will be explained. Experimentation will be encouraged including casting and the adding of a variety of inclusions. Some of the papers make great printing surfaces. Please make sure to wear an apron….this is a wet class! Please bring your NPS Tool Kit. Instructor will provide all materials for class. If you have molds you wish to use for casting please bring them. LYNNE HUBNER SEA & LAND HAND PRINTING WITH AGAR PLATES Instead of working with gelatin, our plates will be made of Agar derived from red purple marine algae. We will print multiple sheets of thin print paper by using leaves, stencils, organic materials, and found objects to make one of a kind pieces of art and imaginative backgrounds for direct printing of nature elements. We will finish up the workshop with the printing of a silk scarf with permanent water based textile ink. We will find that the more you use your handmade plate the more character is created. Some artists refer to this as atmosphere, patina or pathways to the imagination. Plates may be cut into any shape you wish and when you want to change it back to its original shape it may be reconstituted. Recipes for plates, and sources for inks and the like will be provided. Please bring your NPS Tool Kit Instructor will provide all another materials. SHARRON HUFFMAN & LORI LOFTUS GYOTAKU WITH OCTOPUSES DIRECT METHODS This is a basic gyotaku class, suitable for beginners and experienced printers. Enough small octopuses will be provided for each printer to have their own. There will be some larger specimens as well. Our goal will be to produce clean, well-defined direct prints. Sharron and Lori will provide necessary materials, water soluble inks, foam brushes, and an assortment of paper and fabric (muslin and silk). You will need the usual "NPS Tool Box” and you are invited to bring special papers, fabric, or clothing. Please be sure to include a brayer or two in your tool kit. LORI LOFTU GYOTAKU DIRECT METHODS 101 FUN This is a basic gyotaku class, suitable for beginners and experienced printers alike. Learn how to prepare the fish and basic fish printing techniques. Lori will introduce you to the various methods of applying ink to the fish, and the actual rubbing to transfer the ink to paper. There will be a lesson in painting the eyes and how to enhance a print. You will need the NPS Tool Kit. You are invited to bring special papers, fabric, or clothing or tools that you would like to use. CINDY MARLOW ELEMENTS: NATURE PRINTING ON AND WITH METALS We will explore printing techniques incorporating metal, using acrylic paint infused with metal particles. Students will make backgrounds for nature prints as well as printing plant material with these paints. We will use patina activators which react and oxidize the metal particles in the paint. Students should bring NPS Basic Tool Kit. Students will explore and create nature prints on fine mesh brass and copper, metal tape, and metal sheets with fresh plant material. If you are bothered by smell or have asthma or breathing difficulties, please bring a disposable face mask and consider carefully before taking this class. Rubber, latex or nitrile gloves are recommended to keep hands protected when using the patina which is a mild acid. Protective eyewear is also recommended. We will be working outdoors as much as possible to negate fumes. OPTIONAL: Bring any personal plant material you want to print. Material must lay flat on the printing surface. LESLIE MARSH EARTH NOTES In this workshop, we will use very simple ingredients leaves, water and heat to make beautiful prints on fabric and paper. Gathering our materials from wind fallen leaves, florist’s filler and grocery discards, we will create stunning pages and blocks of fabric. Then, using a simple binding technique, we’ll sew our pages into a small reference journal to record our experiments with different materials. Students are welcome to bring their own scraps of fabric or clothing to play with. Natural protein fibers, such as silk and wool work best. This very popular class is being offered twice - on two separate days. Students should bring their NPS Tool Kit as well as scissors, pencil, a ball of string or yarn, and needles and thread. CHARLES MORGAN FOILOGRAPHY Relatively flat, dry material will be “shrink wrapped” in aluminum foil to make a printing plate, revealing a wealth of minute detail. Insects as well as plant material may be used. These plates will be inked and printed while leaving the material relatively unharmed and may be recovered after printing. With this method it is easy to change color and composition. Please bring your NPS Tool Kit. All other materials will be provided. MICHAEL REIMER GYOTAKU DIRECT METHODS In this class designed for the novice printer, you'll learn the basic fish printing techniques, how to prepare the fish, the oil based inks and the applicators. Michael will introduce you to the techniques of applying ink to the fish, and the actual rubbing to transfer the ink to the paper. Once you've printed the fish, there will be a session on painting in the eyes with acrylic inks. Students can expect to print 8 to 12 prints of different fish and students will trade fish, ink and brushes as the class progresses. All materials will be supplied by instructor. PLEASE BRING TO CLASS: NPS Tool Kit if you have an x-acto knife, bring it small detail brushes for painting eyes with acrylic ink if you have ones you like to use. FRED MULLETT IT’S THE THING AROUND THE THING THAT MAKES THE THING EXPLORATIONS IN RESIST PRINTING Instead of concentrating on achieving a positive print of botanical matter on a simple or neutral background, we will explore ideas of making a print on paper that behaves much like we would see in batik on fabric. Our printed object will transfer various resists onto paper and the dyes or paints applied over will activate the negative space of our artwork. An active negative space is simply the other side of the coin from making a active positive print. All materials supplied by instructor. A list of possible other experimental materials will be supplied to accepted students later. NOTE: Liquid Frisket (latex) and ammonia MAY be used at some point in this class. If you have sensitivity issues, we will try to work around them...but be forewarned! FRED MULLETT TAKUGA A style of nature printing where the object (using botanical matter) is sprayed with sumi ink and a print is made; one that is softer than in traditional plant printing. Once the ink has dried, watercolor amendments and details are added to flesh out the piece. This is a very loose and painterly approach to nature printing with some remarkably evocative results. In this class, we will be focused on botanicals that may include leaves, flowers and pressed artificial flowers to familiarize the student with working outside of regular seasonal bounty. We will begin with the basics of sumi ink and added color, and the move into colored sprays and paint. All materials supplied by instructor. A list of optional experimental items will be provided to students at a later date. VICKIE SCHUMACHER PRINTING & HAND COLORING PLANTS & INSECTS TWO-DAY CLASS This workshop will guide you through the steps of using oil based inks for monoprinting both plants and insects on paper that has been antiqued on the first day. The second day will cover hand coloring techniques using various media to bring your prints to life. THIS IS A TWO-DAY CLASS All materials will be supplied by instructor. Please bring your NPS Tool Kit to class. Want a gyotaku T-shirt? Bring a new washed T-shirt to class with you and print one!!
