NATURE VANCOUVER
SUMMER CAMP 2015
MOUNT RENSHAW
Camp Dates:
Camp 1: Sunday, August 2 to Sunday, August 9, 2015
Camp 2: Sunday, August 9 to Sunday, August 16, 2015
The first meal is dinner; the last meal is breakfast, with bag lunch for the road.
If there are not enough applications for both camps, only one camp will go ahead (week to be chosen
based on demand)
Location
Mount Renshaw is in the northern Rocky Mountains, north of McBride, B.C. McBride is about 750 km
north of Vancouver, via Highway 5 to Tete-Jaune Cache then Highway 16 to McBride. Allow 9-10 hours
driving time with rest stops. The camp will be located next to a lake, above the tree line near Mount
Renshaw, at an elevation of 1890 metres.
Details
The camp has a cook and dining tent and is fully catered. Please indicate your dietary needs carefully.
Camp fee is $775.00/adult and $388.00/child. You may hike in/out or, for an extra cost of $100 per trip,
travel by helicopter. Price is based on a full helicopter. All meals and snacks are included. Personal
camping and hiking equipment is not provided.
What to expect at camp:
For those who have not attended a Nature Vancouver summer camp, we begin on Sunday morning with
the hike or helicopter ride into camp from the staging area. All campers first complete various assigned
chores to set up the shared facilities needed to live comfortably in a catered camp. Then personal tents
are set up in locations of your choice and you are ready for happy hour and dinner!
Everybody works together to keep the camp running smoothly. After camp has been set up, you will be
able to enjoy the rest of the week by joining one of the many volunteer-led groups organized by the trip
coordinator, or, if you prefer, you may explore on your own.
This camp area is at a very sensitive ecological location and every effort must be made to minimize our
footprint. To reduce the impact on the walkways between the cookhouse and dining tent, we may have
protective material laid on the ground. There will be up to four NV field toilets and at least one shower
stall for camper use. There may be other campers and day hikers in this area, so please be respectful
and share the area.
Driving from McBride to the Camp Site
The drive in is a 43 km distance with 24 km along a sometimes rough forest access road. Because of
four-five 20-30 cm deep waterbars at the 12 km point on the drive in, vehicles will need to be all-wheel
drive with good ground clearance.
For this reason, an initial staging / ride sharing point will be organized at Jane and Len McClinton’s farm
near McBride, early Sunday morning. Personal gear will be transferred at this point to the 5 ton rental
truck, and campers with low ground clearance vehicles will transfer to those with higher clearance AWD
1
vehicles. All campers are expected to accept and offer rides as needed, with standard Nature
Vancouver driver reimbursement rates to be in effect. Vehicles remaining at the staging area will of
course be safe at the McClinton farm.
A special feature of the 2015 camp will be a pre-camp “social meet and greet dinner” to be catered by
Jane McClinton at their McBride farm. This catered outdoor dinner will be hosted by Jane and offers a
chance to catch up with or meet the other campers as well as to reconnect with Jane. The charge for
the dinner will be $23 per person, to be paid directly to Jane. Jane will be able to host a small number of
guests prior to each camp – more details will be available with your confirmation package.
Hike In
The approx. 4.3 km hike in will take 3-4 hours with an elevation gain of 400 metres. The first 2.3 km is a
gentle grade walk on a logging access road. At this point the trail moves into the trees following a
snowmobiler cut route, at one point up a short steep portion and then a steady climb up to the lakeside
camp location.
Daily Hikes
The groups vary from moderate strolls to more vigorous all-day hikes and easy climbs. Volunteer
leaders often have a special area of interest in which they may give instruction: local history,
photography, astronomy, route finding, and especially areas of natural history such as birds, flowers,
insects and mammals. Each evening we gather as a group for a fun social time of trip reports,
entertainment and speakers.
Accommodation en route to camp:
Most accommodation and camping within reasonable driving distance of the trailhead is in McBride;
more is available in Valemount, one hour away from McBride on Highway 5. More details to follow in the
confirmation papers and on the camp web page.

Helicopter Evacuation
Campers needing to be evacuated by either ambulance or by air ambulance or by helicopter should be
aware that this is their financial responsibility.Out of Province campers are charged at considerably
higher rates than BC residents and should consider obtaining additional insurance coverage. Fee
information at http://www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca/bcas/bcasfees.html
Registration
It is necessary that all campers be current members of Nature Vancouver. Membership fees: family
$50; individual $40; student (18-25 years) $20; junior (under 18 years) $10.
Note: Members of BC Nature through another club may deduct $14.
Priority will be given to those who are current members as of 31 December 2014.
The camp fees shown on the application form include all meals and snacks. The camp committee will
meet in early March to determine whether one or two camps will be held. Spaces will then be assigned
on a first come first served basis to a maximum of 45 campers for each week.
2
Confirmations will be sent out in March via email, or by mail for those without a computer. A waiting list
will then be established. The confirmation will include details of the Pre-camp Organizational Meeting, a
suggested clothing and equipment list, directions, travel information, accommodation info and
information about camp responsibilities and safety precautions.
We hope that you decide to join this summer camp and promise you a rewarding experience with nature
and your fellow campers. A detailed report on the camp will be published later in the NV journal,
“Discovery”. Details of this camp and previous camps can be found on the summer camp page at
http://www.naturevancouver.ca/Main_Summer_Camps.
