A Fun and Inspiring Message
The rate of obesity in our ‘super-size it’ society continues to climb bringing along with it diabetes, high cholesterol, heart attacks, and a host of
other health issues. “We’re all in trouble and we all need to sort of pick
up the pieces and start to exercise,” says Richard Simmons. “When you’re
feeling down, sad, lonely, or negative you don’t want to take care of
yourself, but I’m here to tell you that you must have a positive attitude
and learn to love yourself because you are worth fighting for.”

You Are Worth Fighting For
in Beverly Hills, where Richard still teaches. While many
of his fans have come to him overweight, he also resonates with those who have a few pounds to lose and
who simply want to be fit.
Thirty years and 3,000,000 pounds later, Richard Simmons
is still going strong. As one of the nation’s most revered
fitness experts, he continues his crusade to reach out to

Medical Questions Have You Stumped?
Get The Simple Answers
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple,” said the affable Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to you and me as Dr. Seuss. The great thing about the sometimes whacky writing of Dr. Seuss is that
in his own ingeniously upside-down and inscrutably hilarious way, he was usually right!
Medical problems can seem complicated too, but often times the answers are simple. At least they can be
when you ask your question to the right doctors. You will have your opportunity to do just that on May 13 at the

Dr. Aldridge is a board certified

Life Saving Cardiac Care
According to the American Heart
Association, atherosclerosis causes
hundreds of thousands of heart
attacks and strokes each year and
accounts for nearly three-fourths of
all U.S. deaths from cardiovascular
disease.
With that statistic in mind, Bon
Secours DePaul Medical Center recently invested in a state-of-the-art, fully
digital cardiac catheterization unit.
“This new unit will play a critical role
in assisting physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with
acute conditions, such as a sudden
clot within a coronary artery. The new
unit will also help us treat patients
with chronic heart conditions like
atherosclerosis, the build-up of plaque
that affects blood flow in arteries,” said
Kochicheril Moni, MD, cardiologist
with Cardiovascular Specialists, Inc.
The GE® Innova 2210IQ imaging
system complements the medical
center’s fully digital vascular laboratory and provides the clinical team
affiliated with the Heart and Vascular
Institute access to the latest in technology. The fully digital cardiovascular and interventional X-ray imaging
system allows for better visualization
of hard-to-see blood vessels and
anatomy with greater clarity, even
in larger patients who are generally
more challenging to image. In addition, by using a fully digital imaging
system, the new system will reduce
the patient’s overall exposure to radiation as compared to conventional
fluoroscopy systems.
“The images produced by the new
system are so detailed that physicians are able to see clearly enough
to safely maneuver small medical

A Lesson on Aging From Okinawa
People in Okinawa live to be old —
very old.
This tiny Japanese island has the
highest concentration of 100-yearolds on Earth. It is also home to 15
percent of the total world population of people age 110 and older.
Okinawans enjoy humanity’s longest
life expectancies and suffer 80 percent
less heart attacks than Americans.
What’s happening there?
Well, actually, a lot. Okinawans thrive
for several reasons. Chief among them
is diet. They eat a lot of whole foods
(fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and
whole grains) and only a little animal
protein. They also keep their portions
small.
The good news is that we can take a lesson from
Okinawa, and if we do the results will almost certainly
be less heart disease and generally healthier and happier lives. It’s time we made a change.
By now, it’s no secret that Americans eat poorly and
it’s killing us. About 70 percent of us are overweight.
Heart attacks claim more than 400,000 lives every year.
In fact, heart attacks are the top cause of death in the
United States. In addition, thousands of people suffer
from heart ailments that keep them from living robust,
active, and fulfilling lives.
So, what should we do? The answer, I believe, is simple.
Regardless of age, consider embracing a few ideas:
Edward Skillen, DO, FACC
is a cardiologist with
Cardiovascular Specialists,
a Bon Secours Heart and
Vascular Institute specialty practice.
If you want to learn
more about what makes
Okinawans so robust, he
recommends the book,
Healthy At 100, by John
Robbins.
• Exercise. Okinawans are active. They keep moving — and having fun — well into their 80s, 90s and
even at 100 plus. Find an activity you like. Dozens
of options exist including walking, swimming, and
even training for the Senior Olympics. Be sure to get
a vigorous workout for 45 to 60 minutes five to six
days a week.
•B
uild your menus around whole foods. You
don’t have to give up great tasting meals. Thousands
of cookbooks now offer superb vegetable-based
recipes, which are naturally low in fat. You also don’t
have to abandon meat. Just consider cutting back.
About 25 percent of the typical American meal is
animal protein. In Okinawa, it’s closer to 5 percent.
And, yes, it’s OK to have the occasional cookie. I do,
too.
• Watch your weight. You don’t have to be skinny as
a super model but you shouldn’t be carrying around
an extra 50 pounds either.
• Get medical checkups. A good healthcare team
can help you watch your weight, diet, blood pressure,
sugar levels, and cholesterol. They can also help you
monitor your medical conditions.
In short, I’m suggesting you take to heart — pun
intended — a simple philosophy from Okinawa: “Food
should nourish life. This is the best medicine.”
