Basin beginnings Monash researchers have, for the first time, discovered the origins of Australia’s two largest basins: Lake Eyre and the Murray-Darling Basin. The research also implies that in 30 million years’ time both basins will cease to exist. New AAS Fellows STAFF PROFILE Congratulations to the four NCIsupported researchers who have been announced as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science. More Creating antimatter in the lab NCI is helping Curtin’s Professor Igor Bray answer one of science’s most intriguing mysteries – Where did all of the antimatter at the origin of the Universe go? More Modelling bone remodelling Professor Qinghua Qin and his team Dr Lesley Wyborn ADJUNCT FELLOW, ANU What are you currently working on? I came to NCI mainly for the opportunity to work on the 10 Petabytes+ of data collections that are on the at ANU are using NCI’s supercomputing facilities to work out how bones remodel themselves, with implications for osteoporosis – and cricket bats! More Corrosive current With the help of Raijin, an international team of researchers has discovered how a highly corrosive deep-water current that flows through the North Atlantic Ocean formed. More NCI National Environmental Research Data Interoperability Platform, and to work with users ensuring they can be programmatically accessed for next generation interdisciplinary science. I also participate on some external committees developing data standards for interoperability and working on getting recognition of the new breed of researcher, the Data Scientist. What has been the highlight of your career? Firstly, working with 20 Australian Mineral Companies in 1997 to develop an atlas of the mineral potential of Australian Proterozoic Granites and secondly, coming to NCI to work on 10 Petabytes of Australian Earth and Environmental Data. Where is your favourite place to travel to and why? Two places: Firstly temperate rainforests of South Eastern Australia – I love tree ferns and eucryphia forests (particularly plum woods) and secondly, coastal temperate mountain areas of North and South America, preferably when they have snow.
