To help us ensure the comfort, safety and health of the whole community, the Nhulunbuy (Animal Control) By-laws place certain responsibilities on all dog owners living on the town lease. These responsibilities can be found at www.ncl.net.au and include ensuring your dog is registered with us annually. Dog found wandering at large/picked up by a Nhulunbuy Corporation Animal Control Officer If a registration tag is on the dog’s collar All dogs will be returned to their owner/responsible person if possible, otherwise the dog will be taken to the pound If the dog is registered and this is the first offence, the owner/ responsible person will receive a written warning about the dog being at large If this is the second or subsequent offence, an Infringement Notice ($50 fine) for the dog being at large will be issued to the owner/responsible person If a registration tag is not on the dog’s collar The dog will be impounded Details of the dog will be uploaded to social media If the dog is registered , it will be released to the owner/ responsible person If the dog is unregistered , it must be registered before it will be released from the pound If this is the first offence, the owner/ responsible person will receive a written warning about the dog being at large and/or not having registration tags affixed If this is the second or subsequent offence, an Infringement Notice will be issued to the owner/responsible person Please note Photo ID must be presented by the person collecting dog from pound If an impounded dog appears to be injured or diseased, the dog may be referred to a vet service for examination and treatment If animal mistreatment is observed, a written report may be obtained from a vet service and if the mistreatment is deemed serious it will be referred to NT Police Dog menacing/attacking person or animal Upon reporting of a dog menacing/attack incident, a statement is taken from the victim/complainant If the dog has been identified, an interview is undertaken with the dog’s owner and a written statement obtained Upon receipt of all statements and any further relevant information, the matter is investigated by the Nhulunbuy Corporation If a dog has attacked a person (up to $250 fine), the Nhulunbuy Corporation will require the dog’s owner to provide reasons as to why the dog should not be permanently removed from the town lease Report of unregistered dog at property If a report is received of an unregistered dog, the Nhulunbuy Corporation may visit the property If an unregistered dog is found at the property, the owner/person responsible will be asked to register the dog within 5 working days If the dog is not registered within this period, the Nhulunbuy Corporation will issue an Infringement Notice for owning/keeping an unregistered dog ($50 fine) Wild dogs Whilst the Nhulunbuy Corporation maintains a regular feral animal control program, sightings of wild dogs around Nhulunbuy are common.
