(503) 653-8100 Page 5 Pat Arnold Writing Instructor Pat has been the writing instructor at the Milwaukie Center since January 1996. She teaches Creative Writing and Your Story, a memoir writing class. If you take her class, you will learn how to take ideas from your head to and put them into words. Her classes are not the typical writing classes. It has become a place of discussion and exchange of ideas which builds a sense of camaraderie. During the summer, students can range from 18 to 90+ years old which brings diverse conversations on feelings and viewpoints that span multi-generations. The result in Pat’s classes is more alertness and more interest in life in her students. Taking this class helps people connect with others who have the same interest in writing. Sometimes people find themselves taking the Your Story class to help preserve some of the family stories that their children are requesting. The benefits of stimulating the brain, learning a new skill, and making friends far outweigh an afternoon spent watching television. Pat Arnold graduated from Oregon State with a degree in English Literature and a minor in Art History. She would love to help you meet your goals of writing for personal reasons, preserving family history, or getting published. Creative Writing This class stimulates creative thinking and stretches students’ abilities to see and write in fresh new ways. This group of women meet each Thursday morning on the stage to hand stitch quilts for people. The proceeds go to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center and their support of the Center. But where they really shine is at the Quilt Show. All year long we receive donations of fabric, magazines and other items related to quilting and crafting. The Quilt Committee sorts, folds, cleans and organizes all of these items and offers them for sale at the Quilt Show. This year, they made over $5,300! Stop by sometime and say thank you to an amazing group of women. Where Were You? We have received several stories about where you were on an important or eventful date in history and we will start printing them each month. Be sure to send us your story if you haven’t already. Some of the stories may be edited for brevity. Geraldine Butler My three sisters and I were leaving Boston for Oregon on the morning of 9/11 at about 8:30 a.m. All seemed normal until the pilot came on the speaker and told us he was going to circle for awhile as he wasn’t allowed to cross back into the U.S. (we had crossed into Canada over the Great Lakes). A little later the speaker came on and said the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane and gone down. At the time, they were building Twin Towers in Boston that were not finished and we thought that’s what they were referring to. The next thing we heard was that we would be landing in Toronto. The pilot said “It’s a sad day." We weren’t allowed to leave the plane at first since we didn’t have passports. After being questioned and ID’s checked, we were finally allowed to leave with only our hand luggage. At the hotel, we rushed to the TV to find out what was going on and were shocked to say the least. We immediately contacted our family to let them know we were OK, they all thought we were on one of the planes that crashed. After three days we were finally on our way home. The plane that left before us crashed and the one that left after us hit the towers. We know how fortunate we were.
