Abigail Bleier and Natalie Moulton Named to 2015 All-Western New York Academic Team
Two Notre Dame High School seniors have been named
to Buffalo Business First's 2015 All-Western New York
Academic Team.
Abigail Bleier, daughter of Philip and Sally Bleier of
Batavia, and Natalie Moulton, daughter of Stephen and
Martina Moulton of LeRoy, have qualified for this year's
Special Mention list of the 100 most outstanding high
school seniors in the eight-county region.
Abigail Bleier will be attending Albany School of Pharmacy
or the University at Buffalo to study pharmaceutical
sciences. A NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete, she will
graduate with 40+ college credits. She has been given
Anima Christi (Spirit of Christ) recognition, the most
prestigious honor given at Notre Dame, for her compassionate service to others. She currently serves as
President of the ND SADD chapter and Vice President of
the Genesee County-wide SADD, as well as editor of
NODAHI, the school newspaper. Other activities include
National Honor Society, ND Science Club, Envirothon
Team, ND Drama Society, Chorus, Handbell Choir,
Mission Club, Basketball, and Track and Field.
Natalie will be attending Notre Dame University to pursue
studies in Bio-Medical Engineering. Also a NYSPHSAA
Scholar-Athlete, she will graduate with 22 college credits
plus credit for 4 Advanced Placement courses. She, too,
has been given the Anima Christi Medal for her exemplary
service to and compassion for others. She is currently
Genesee County-wide SADD Secretary and an active
member of the Diocese of Buffalo Youth Board. She
represented Genesee County as its 2014 Empire Girl
State delegate and served as Notre Dame’s delegate to
the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference. Other
activities include SADD, Mock Trial, Ski Club, Drama
Society, Chorus, Volleyball, Swimming and Diving, and
Track and Field.
Winners were chosen for their records of academic
excellence, school leadership and community involvement.
The top 25 were named to the First Team, 25 runners-up
to the Second Team, and another 50 to the Special
Mention list.

"The competition for the Academic Team is intense," said
Jack Connors, president and publisher of Business First.
"There are almost 20,000 high school seniors in Western
New York, yet only 100 are selected for this honor. Every
student named to the Academic Team is truly an
outstanding student."
Schools throughout the eight-county area were asked to
nominate their smartest and most accomplished students
for consideration by a seven-member committee, which
included five admissions directors at area colleges and
two Buffalo Business First editors. A total of 124 schools
responded with 426 nominees. (Each school was limited
to four
candidates.)
The complete list of 100 honorees -- along with their
photos and profiles -- will be published in Buffalo Business
First's 2015-2016 Guide to Western New York Schools,
which will hit newsstands on June 12.

Hopefully you have been able to “weather” [no pun intended] the recent “deep freeze” we have all experienced
since the final week of January. It has surely been a trying time attempting to balance the need to continue
instruction with the possible effects that severe wind chill temps in the -20 to -30 range and blustery conditions
have on keeping school open on inclement weather days! The bottom line is that the safety and well-being of
our students and staff needs to prevail when final school closing decisions are made. Hopefully “cabin fever
reliever” spring-like conditions will arrive in the not too distant future!
Please mark your calendars - Friday, March 13, 2015, originally planned as a Staff Development Day, is now
an official instructional day at ND in light of our recent wave of “severe wind chill” cancellations. ND parents
are asked to please refer to the “e-blast” e-mail you previously received from our ND Advancement Office on
February 27, 2015 for more specifics.
Despite the ongoing “big chill”, many notable things continue to happen on a daily basis at 73 Union Street since
our February 2015 edition hit the electronic airwaves! An overview of key events and activities which our board
of trustees, faculty and staff members, and students have been involved in since the publication of our February
issue includes:

Our ND Scholastic Bowl team [Advisor Mrs. Kristen Calarco-Gomez] – the 2013 GLOW region
Scholastic Bowl Champion - recently advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 season in competition with
twelve [12] area GLOW region teams. This year’s team is led by seniors Abigail Bleier, Dennis Bleier and
Anna Spring; juniors Joe Bergman, Bryan Moscicki and Cindy Skalny; and sophomore Fiona Beck.

The 2nd of 3 Red Cross Blood Drives held at ND this year produced 80 pints of usable blood for those
in need! Hats off to our ND SADD Advisor Mrs. Liz Riter, Guidance Secretary Mrs. Karen Rapone, and ND
Custodian Ralph Coffta for the keys rolls that you played supporting this annual drive in memory of Matthew
Kota, the brother of ND graduate Sean Kota ’11. Our final SADD-sponsored drive will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at ND [8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.].

ND Director of Athletics Mike Rapone ‘71, who also serves as our ND Assistant Principal and Varsity Boys
Basketball and Baseball coach, proudly announced that all seven [7] Winter ND Varsity sports teams –
Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys Swimming, Girls Swimming, Basketball Cheerleading, Ice Hockey
and Indoor Track – achieved New York State Scholar-Athlete [minimum 90% scholastic average] status!

We can all rightfully be proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on
the court, the ice or in the pool! Congratulations also to Fighting Irish AD Mike Rapone and to our ND
Winter coaches Mike Rapone, Dave Pero, Eric Geitner, Marc Staley, and Lindsay Warner for your

400+ supporters attended this year’s gala on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Batavia Downs. A list of trip
winners appears in this month’s newsletter. A big word of thanks goes out to ND Advancement Office
Coordinator Kathy Antinore and Main Office Secretary Michelle Wall for the key support roles that they
provided Anita during this year’s successful event.


Our Winter sports teams have recently completed Genesee Region [GR] play and are either currently
involved in or having just finished Section V competition. Final results of winter season competition along
with pictures of ND Section V All-Stars will appear in next month’s [April 2015] newsletter.
Good luck to the following Fighting Irish teams in upcoming NYSPHSAA Section competition:
 Coach Mike Rapone’s ‘71 Varsity Boys Basketball [14 - 7] earned the #2 seed in Class D1 in the 94th
annual Section V Boys Basketball tournament. We defeated the #7 Lyndonville Tigers [77 – 55] in the
Quarterfinals on 2-28-15 and #3 Mt. Morris Blue Devils [62 – 45] in the Semifinals on 3-4-15. Our
semifinal round victory sets up a showdown with the #1 seeded Genesee Valley Jaguars [20 – 1] in this
year’s Class D1 finals. This game will be played at “The Big House” – the Blue Cross Arena at the
Rochester War Memorial - on Saturday, 3-7-15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Make sure to check out
our web page – www.ndhsbatavia.com - calendar on 3-8-15 for results of this championship game which
has yet to be played at press time! Go Irish!
Congratulations to the following Fighting Irish teams which ended their 2014-2015 seasons in recent
Sectional competition:


Coach Dave ’69 and David’s ’95 Pero’s Varsity Girls Basketball [16 – 5] team earned the #6 seed in
the 2015 Class C1 Varsity Girls Tournament. We defeated the #11 Williamson Lady Marauders [55 – 29]
on 2-25-15 and advanced to the Quarterfinal round where we were eliminated by the #3 seeded GR
rival Lady Bees of Byron-Bergen [41 -32] on 2-28-15. The Lady Bees avenged a regular season loss [40
-32] to our Lady Irish in this contest. This year’s squad repeated as Genesee Region Division II
champions [14 – 0]. Emma Francis ’15 was chosen to represent the GR league in the annual Ronald
McDonald All-Star basketball game at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School on Saturday, 3-28-15.

Coach Lindsay Warner’s ’01 Varsity Boys Basketball Cheerleading team finished 2nd [for the 2nd
consecutive year] in the recent Section V Class D Cheerleading competition held at RIT as well as 1 st in
the Wellsville Lady Lions Cheer Competition.

Coach Eric Geitner’s four [4] member Varsity Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams finished 7th and
13th respectively out of 20 teams in the Class D Sectional meet at RIT on February 20, 2015! Imagine
what we could do if we were able to field a full team roster!

Coach Marc Staley’s youthful Varsity Hockey team [9-12] qualified for the #5 seed – our highest
seed since our 2011 team won the Class B Sectionals - in the recent Section V Class B tournament
before being upended by #4 large school Irondequoit in the Class B Quarterfinals. We return 19
members of this year’s squad – mostly 9th and 10th graders – next year!
As of press time, our ND Mock Trial team [Advisor Mrs. Kristen Calarco-Gomez and Mr. Bob Zickl, Esq.
- Coach] began their 2015 competition by going 4-0 with Genesee, Orleans and Livingston county schools!
Third marking period interim reports will be mailed out on Friday, March 13, 2015. Please continue to take
the time to encourage your student[s] to do his or her very best academically. There is no substitute for

hard work in the long run! Our 3rd marking period will end on Friday, April 17, 2015 upon return from our
Easter recess. Third quarter report cards are scheduled to be mailed on Friday, April 24, 2015.
Performances of our ND Drama Club's musical, Damn Yankees, under the direction of Mark and Theresa
Kehl, will take place at 7 p.m. on March 13th and 14th here at ND. A sneak preview assembly will be performed
on March 12, 2015 for students in grades 5 – 8 from our partner school - St. Joseph’s in Batavia. I hope that you
will be able to take the opportunity to attend one of these performances and see for yourself the amazing
performing talent pool that we have at ND on stage!

Genesee Youth Lead Graduates
ND sophomores Hannah Bowen and Chris Lemley
participated in and recently graduated from the 2 nd
Annual Genesee Youth Lead program held in
conjunction with the Genesee County Community
College ACE [Accelerated College Enrollment]
Programs.
The Youth Lead program focuses on developing
positive leadership and decision making qualities in
aspiring teenage leaders. Participants met every
other week during the 1st semester to hone their
skills and learn more about leadership opportunities
in Genesee County.
Students from Alexander Junior-Senior High
School, Batavia Senior High School, Elba Central
and Oakfield-Alabama Jr.-Sr. High School also
attended this year’s program.

Scholastic Bowl Team Ends Its Season in a Semifinal Match Meant for the Record Books
The scholastic bowl team finished its season on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in a nail biting semi-final match
against Attica and Alden that came down to the very last second. Joe Bergman, Abby Bleier, Dennis Bleier, and
Anna Spring all contributed to the high scoring night. The team finished second behind Attica in a mere ten point
discrepancy, a one question difference for the championship which would have advanced the team to the finals. The
teams were all within a few questions of each other during all three rounds and the results demonstrated the
competitiveness of each team. Attica finished with 240 points to take first, Notre Dame with 230 points to take
second and Alden took third with 220 points. Attica advanced to the finals against Batavia and Alexander.
The team had a successful regular season finishing in fifth place overall in a pool of twelve surrounding area
schools. Team members include sophomore Fiona Beck; juniors Joseph Bergman, Bryan Moscicki, and Cindy
Skalny; and seniors Abby Bleier, Dennis Bleier, and Anna Spring. Kristen Calarco-Gomez is the advisor.

Notre Dame High School is proud to recognize MaryBernadette Bochicchio ‘15, daughter of Bill and Patti Bochicchio
of Warsaw, New York and Lucas Hull ‘15, son of Charles and Denise Hull of LeRoy, New York as our March 2015
Seniors in the Spotlight.
MaryBernadette Bochicchio entered her senior year at
Notre Dame with an A+ (95.96%) scholastic average and
is on schedule to graduate with an Advanced Regents
diploma and thirty-three [33] college-level credits as a
result of taking Advanced Placement (AP) and collegelevel courses at ND during her junior and senior year
college preparatory schedules.
MaryBernadette has been a member in good standing of
the Notre Dame Chapter of National Honor Society since
her sophomore year, as well as an academic high honor
roll student during each marking period throughout her
high school career. She was the recipient of the Grade 11
Spanish Department award and has been recognized as a
“Student of the Month” during each of her first three years
at ND.
MaryBernadette has been a four [4] year member of the
following ND clubs and organizations: Mission Club,
SADD Chapter [Students Against Destructive Decisions], Select Chorus and Student Senate. She currently serves as
the President of Student Senate and the Vice President of the Notre Dame Chapter of the National Honor Society.

She has also been a key four year member of our Fighting Irish Varsity Girls Volleyball and Tennis programs and a
two year member of our Girls Basketball program. She has been a contributing member of three [3] Section V Class D
Championship Volleyball teams as well as being a member of the 2012 ND Varsity Girls Class D Section V, Far
Western Regional and NYSPHSAA State Championship Basketball teams! MaryBernadette also plays AAU Club
Volleyball and has earned the following awards during her volleyball career at ND:

In keeping with our Notre Dame Mission statement of “developing leaders who serve,” MaryBernadette has volunteered
at the St. Michael’s [Warsaw, New York] Community Clothes Closet as well as a Vacation Bible School group leader for
elementary aged students at St. Michael’s. She has also participated in the Right-to-Life Sunday “Life Chain” silent
protest at ND standing in witness to the unborn, as well as having been a seven year participant in the Life March
national event in Washington, D.C. in protest of the Supreme Court-sanctioned “Roe v. Wade” abortion ruling.
MaryBernadette is the proud recipient of Anima Christi [Spirit of Christ] recognition – the highest form of recognition
a student can earn at Notre Dame High School - as a result of extraordinary acts of compassion for and service to
others.
She is interested in pursuing Psychology as a college major and in a possible career in Elementary Education/Special
Education. She is currently considering St. John Fisher College, Niagara University, Keuka College, Flagler College,
and Ave Maria as possible college choices for next year.

currently writes for NODAHI, our school newspaper, and was a member of our 2014 Fighting Irish Varsity
Football team. He also earned prestigious NYSPHSAA “scholar-athlete” status [minimum 90% academic
average] during his recent fall Varsity season. Lucas lists karate and archery as outside interests during his
high school career at ND.
In keeping with our Notre Dame Mission statement of “developing leaders who serve,” Lucas has volunteered
at the Our Lady of Mercy Vacation Bible School in LeRoy, New York, and as a teen assistant at the Woodward
Memorial Library [also in LeRoy]. He has also participated in the Christ R.U.L.E.S summer mission project in
the City of Rochester as part of the ND Mission Club’s outreach program.
Lucas is interested in pursuing a degree in Biology and lists careers in entomology such as forensics, biological
control or sustainability possible career choices. He plans to attend St. John Fisher College where he has
received a number of academic scholarships to date. He was also accepted at RIT, Alfred University and
SUNY Brockport.
MaryBernadette and Lucas are both very respectful, good natured individuals who treat others the way they
would like to be treated! They are both well respected by their peers and teachers and are credits to their
families, churches and Notre Dame High School.
Notre Dame High School wishes both MaryBernadette and Lucas the best of luck in the remainder of their
senior years at ND, as well as in the pursuit of their career goals as they enter the college of their choice during
the fall of 2015!

An informational meeting for individuals interested in being host parents for international students for the 2015-2016
school year will be held at Notre Dame High School during our 2nd semester on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 7
p.m. in the ND cafeteria!
Mr. Nicholas Wilson, Director of Educational programs for 3W International will be present to give an overview of
the expectations of host parents, as well as to provide information about lucrative financial benefits available to parents
who choose to be host parents.

Willing to Be an International Student Respite Parent for the Current School Year?
On occasion, work-related responsibilities and/or planned trips require our current host families to leave the area from

[[email protected]] if you are available to help house an international student for a weekend or brief
period of time.
We currently have 5 international students from the People’s Republic of China at ND and hope to have an additional 2
-3 students in attendance during next [2015-2016] year. These students will need host families!

Cupcakery Team to Compete at GCC’s Virtual Business Trade Fair
The Cupcakery will compete at Genesee Community
College’s Virtual Business Trade Fair Wednesday,
March 25. The event is open to the public with free
admission. Each participant will be given a checkbook
with $10,000 virtual dollars to spend at the fair!
Teams will be awarded for Best Booth Design, Most
Transactions, Best in Salesmanship, Best in
Marketing, and Most Sales. Teams also will be
judged on their preparation of a realistic business
plan, product catalog, and website with awards given
at a later date.

News from POND (Parents of Notre Dame)
Welcome to March! I never thought that we could get to this side of winter but here we are!
POND has not been hibernating at all throughout this winter. We have been planning for spring and even
Graduation. United Way Day of Caring is in May and Teacher Appreciation week is on the way. Graduation is
rapidly coming upon us also and all hands will be needed on deck for all of these!
I am so happy to announce that for our March 9 meeting at 7pm, a former colleague of mine and wonderful
speaker, Tiffany Szymanek J.D., Development Director of the Family Justice Center in Buffalo, will be presenting
a very informative, short program for all. This program is called “Healthy Dating and the Red Flags of Relationships”. Technology is used so much to communicate today and abuse, bullying and unhealthy relationships
involving our sons, daughters and yes, even parents, exist more than we realize. Come and listen to her talk, tell
your friends and bring your students. You won’t be sorry.

from all over the Diocese of
Buffalo at St. Joseph
Cathedral to celebrate the
Rite of Election. Bishop
Malone welcomed them each
by name and shared a
wonderful homily, in which he
quoted the Gospel of John –
“It is not you who chose Me,
but I who chose you…” and
then went on to thank the Elect for echoing the “Yes” to
that choosing. Ethan has been studying and preparing
through Resurrection Parish since last spring to receive
all of the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist, at the Easter Vigil this
year!

The difficult winter, along with the high rate of flu, have left blood supplies
dangerously low. Our spring blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday,
March 18th. This drive is open to the public, so all ND families are welcome
to participate. Students who are 16 are required to use the RC issued
permission form. Students over 17+ do not require parental permission.

National Kick Butts Day

On Monday, March 23rd our SADD chapter will be creating a display for National Kick Butts Day.
Students are encouraged to become advocates who rally against big tobacco companies. These
tobacco companies and the producers of alternative tobacco products (vapes/e-cigs) seek to find
“replacement” users.

Regional Action Phone (RAP) and GCASA have
teamed up to establish the Tipline—a prevention
and intervention safety net for young people in
Genesee and Orleans Counties.
Concerned adults, teachers, students and friends
now have a place to call 24 hours a day to report
underage drinking parties or other activities that are
harmful to the health, safety and/or welfare of
young people.
The Tipline is anonymous, confidential and free.
By calling 343-1932 or 1-800-851-1932 and
providing basic information a difference can be
made, tragedy diverted and lives saved.

. . . and the beat goes on! All thirteen [13] ND Varsity Fall and Winter sports teams including both Football and
Basketball Cheerleading squads have now achieved NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete status [minimum 90% academic
average] !
15 of 17 ND Varsity level teams have earned Scholar-Athlete status for the past eight [8] consecutive years as ND
student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. 16 of 17 Varsity level teams have
qualified for Scholar-Athlete status on three [3] different occasions in the past 10 years!!!

Inclement Weather School Closing Procedures
Please know that during periods of inclement weather, we will announce
our closings as Notre Dame High School. If you do not see Notre Dame
High School appear on your television screen or hear it announced on
WBTA [1490 AM], we are open for business as usual!
Students whose home districts close due to inclement weather are not
required to attend classes at ND on days of home district closings
(although many do). However, students are still responsible for making up
work missed and handing in assignments which were due on these days
upon their return to ND.
In addition to announcing closings on WBTA 1490 AM, we also post
closings, delays and early dismissals on our web page calendar
(www.ndhsbatavia.com), as well as the following television channels:

