ANIMAL CONCERNS
We continue to have
people from the city move to
the country for quality of life
and to get away for hunting
and other recreational
purposes. I want to address
animal issues and concerns
in this piece today.
The first animal I will
address is dogs. I am an
avid dog lover but remember
there are some dogs that
chase and harm livestock
which is not only a problem
but against the law.
Missouri state statute
chapter 273 discusses this in
more detail at
http://www.moga.mo.gov/mo
statutes/chapters/chapText2
73.html. If a dog harms or
kills livestock, the livestock
owner can contact the
county sheriff the 1st time
and has every legal right to
shoot the dog the next time.
Keep in mind that once a
dog attacks livestock it will
not stop and a farmer is
earning a living from that
livestock. If you live in the
country then keep your dog
penned up or away from
livestock if it is harmful.
Animals that you own are
your responsibility to keep
in your property. That is
anywhere from 1 horse to
200 cows. Depending on the
county your land is, that
fence needs to be 4 barbed
wire or the equivalent {local
option counties} or at least 4
foot high with posts no
farther than 12 feet apart
and keep in livestock
{updated general law
counties}. If livestock get out
of your portion of the fence
and it does not meet these
standards, then you cannot
receive any damages from
your neighbor. Don’t forget
that no matter how good a
fence is that there are times
that animals do get out.
Fixing the fence and water
gaps as soon as possible and
letting your neighbor know
is just good business. If you
don’t live on the property
then have someone check it
for you regularly.
Animals, whether
domestic or wildlife, can be a
problem at some times.
Knowing your responsibility
and having a plan of action
can solve conflict and
headaches later. University

to Sullivan County on
Saturday, May 16th at the
Green City Hall and Park. It
will go from 10 AM to noon
and include rabbits, poultry
and dogs. They will discuss
showmanship, nutrition,
health concerns, show ring
ethics and handling. You
can attend by paying $10 by

Burch Harrington, who
served in my position from
1962 to 1978. Burch passed
away at the age of 99 last
week. He was very helpful to
me when I started in 1980,
offering advice when asked
but never telling me what to
do {even though maybe he
should have sometimes}.
THOUGHT: “Eventually
all of the pieces will fall into
place. Until then, laugh at

moment, and know that
everything happens for a
